It's kind of funny how one-trick-ponies are the ones who would care the most about mastery

TheLittlestLulu··185 votes·8,106 views

but it's one-trick-ponies that really get screwed over by mastery level 6-7. I have the 3 S shards I need to level Lulu to mastery 7 but I need to get S ranks on champions I don't play so I can get chests that will maybe have champ shards.

Yeah I'm really feeling like this was well thought out.

tying champion mastery to hextech crafting is one of the dumbest decisions riot has made this season imo

Verdade11 votes

Actually i approve this, as getting 6 & 7 ranks requires dedication and some skill, unlike 1-5 ranks. In order to get 7th rank you need 5x S on that champion and multiple S ranks on others.

Playing or being able to play champions other than your main is vital. You can't be good player if you can play only one champion. And im saying this as a support Vel'koz main. Support Vel'koz requires unique skill and mindset, so its kinda hard to play other champions, but heck, getting S on champions other than your main isn't hard at all. I played Azir second time in my life and got S, first time for Sivir and Cassio...

What does any of that have to do with the mastery system? If you want a gold medal for having a broad champion pool, we can work on getting Riot to implement that, but it has nothing to do with mastery on a specific champion.

Regardless of whether it's easy, it's poorly thought out.

Verdade6 votes

I have rank 5 mastery on 86% of my champions. Does that mean they're all my mains and im equally good at them? Not even close. Having to gather S ranks from multiple champions in order to get one rank 7 means you're dedicated to that champion, you'll have 1 or 2 of such champions, not 39 or so. Imagine loading screen where you see this guy with skin and rank 7 mastery, you'll say something like "Nice, this guy is on his main and he will probably rock" while 5th rank means nothing. Rank 5 means they know what their abilities do (and not even that sometimes, hello Anivia using E without freeze) but that's it.

Mandang014 votes

I'm not disagreeing that the system shows dedication, but if you seek to measure mastery on a specific champion, a player's performance on a bunch of other champions isn't very informative. If the number of S ranks is what you care about, then increase the required number of S's on the champion in question.

So i played this game yesterday where i was laning as supp Vel'koz against Ezreal. I used to play EZ frequently and i knew exactly how much damage he can deal. I played very carefully because Ez can burst you from half hp to 0 in less than second past level 2. E+AA+Q would instantly kill me(roughly 100 damage overkill), but he was bad and he did not realize this. Too bad i saw this and i instantly knew he's a newbie on Ez, allowing me to bully him and later even kill him.

Next game i went to mid as VK against Ahri and i completely stomped her because when she got low (30%) she tried to stay back and heal with passive. This is huge underestimation of VK's range, so i landed 1500 range Q into R and she ate dirt. If she played VK once she would know i can hit stuff beyond my vision range

Knowledge about opponent's champion is maybe even more important than knowledge about yours because not dying is more importabt than killing

VasilisGreen5 votes

It's still irrelevant with champion mastery... Champion mastery is not about how well you know what the enemy can do but how well can you use the CAMPION YOU play. It's focused on a specific champion, not at a broader champion knowledge about everyone.

Verdade1 votes

Okay, so according to you, if i took my brother and made him play single champion (let's say Azir) in custom game against Soraka bot until he plays him masterfully, would he be equal to normal soloq player? Not even close. If you threw him into real game he would feed like McDonalds on wheels because he knows nothing about enemies. Again, knowledge about your enemies is more important than knowledge about your own champion

VasilisGreen4 votes

dude.... you really can't comprehend it, can you?

Verdade1 votes

Okay, so let's remove blue essence requirement and add 20x S- rank for 6th mastery and 40x S rank for 7th mastery. Is that okay for you now? It's fine for me because im getting S rank every other game. But it will be not fine for you, as you get S rank every fifth or tenth game. It could mean rank 7 is unreachable for bronze player, because he needs insane luck to get that much S ranks.

Would it be fair? Yes it would. Mastery ranks would be obtainable only by actually good players.

Would it be good? No, it wouldn't. 80% of playerbase is in Silver/Bronze, imagine the outcry on boards and reddit. "Mastery requirements too hard", "Good players are getting borders/free skins every season, we want something too"

If you lowered the requirements, every other dia player would be rank 7 on every champion they play, not because they can master that champion, but just thanks to their general knowledge. They know when and how to farm, when to push, when to take objectives and how to close games. You can have score like 5/6/6 and still get S rank if you know these things, as it will reflect on your statistics much more than mechanical skill.

FearEngineer5 votes

It's like you don't even understand the argument at all Verdade... to a degree that is fucking SCARY.

VasilisGreen2 votes

General knowledge does not apply to a single champion but to everyone. You can be pure shit at Azir, for example, and still win the game because you know what to do and when. this doesn't make you a good Azir player, it makes you a good player in general. Like, you can be beaten to utter shit in lane with a champion you are not good with but still perform well in other aspects like CSing, kill participation, objective control. That's not champion specific. It doesn't matter towards a champion's mastery and skill requirement.

Knowing the most optimal combo on Ryze and proper manipulation of your passive IS a champion specific knowledge and is an indication of mastery. Propper use of your E as yasuo to outplay your opponents IS a trait of your mastery over Yasuo. Propper skillshot alignment with QW and E as Vel'Koz and hitting your shit from weird angles IS an indication of champion mastery. All those ARE champion specific.

See the difference? Champion specific vs General knowledge?

Verdade1 votes

Of course, but then giving mastery ranks on champion based on in-game mastery grades makes ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE because they reflect general knowledge more than champion specific knowledge.

VasilisGreen1 votes

The mastery ranks after a game are not based on general game knowledge... Each game is compared to the rest of the games of all the players in your region WITH THAT CHAMPION in the same role and the stats each one had and if your game is among the BEST game stats recorded at the time, you get an S+. all games are graded based on your in game STATS alone, CS, Kills, Deaths, Assists, Turrets destroyed, neutral minions slain, Damage done, EVERYTHING. Everything is recorded as a point of refference and each day the requirements change because people are getting better. What is worth an A+ today might be worth a B- tomorrow and an S+ today might be an A+ tomorrow. That's how your grade is given, not by your general knowledge. The game doesn't know what your knowledge is. It tracks your movements, where you spend most of your time early to decide your role, how much damage you do, how many skillshots you hit as a % of your total spellcasts, how many turrets you took, at what point in the gametime, How many times you died with each death deteriorating your potential grade, how many kills you got and so on. So, if i want to get an S+ as Zed i need to play well enough AS ZED, so that my end game stats are among THE BEST of my region.

It doesn't consider rank, division or tier. It only calculates STATS. Nothing more, nothing less.

General knowledge doesn't matter, it can't see it. Get it now?

That's saying a lot considering this is the dumbest season going all the way back to S2 which is before LoL was even what we know it as today. Just to be clear I completely agree.

Makes me wonder why they didn't wait and release it with the 6 and 7 mastery.

They probably wanted to wait to try to sell boxes and keys from the shop for all the people who don't want to wait for this in the store.

no, they said theyre adding BOXES that contain random champion shards for ip. how did everybody miss that? and guess what you need to do to open those boxes? buy keys or sacrifice possible skin shards from your regular mastery boxes.

that being said, you dont need a specific champion shard to get mastery 6 and 7. you can disenchant any shard you find. so its just a matter of time and unlocking more mastery boxes.

it is kindof a dumb system and itl get dumber. but its not that hard to accomplish.

Verdade3 votes

It smart requiring such high dedication. Rank 5 means basically nothing, everyone has it on like every champion they own. Rank 7 means it's their main and they spent long time getting it, so they probably mastered their champion

someone had the idea to only have tokens, or S ranks in general count towards the advancement into mastery levels 6 and 7. that would have been a better representation of dedication and skill than mastery level 5, or all that crap with blue essence tbh.

they just slapped it on there imo, because they promised theyd give people with all champions in the game something to do with their blue essence and needed to come up with something.

id prefer they had sold key fragments for blue essence instead so you could have kinda recycled it.

Im one-trick pony (okay, maybe 2- VK and Bard) and i had no problems getting S on multiple champions on first/second try, so i already have 7th rank :) Rank 7 shows you're dedicated to that champion, you're playing him well and you are skilled in the game as a whole. It's a good thing.

Sad thing remains you can just buy the blue essence for RP and be done with it

How is that sad? what the hell does blue essense have to do with champion mastery to begin with? how is something as small 2 S/3 S being a mastery rank up good in any way?

Seriously, screw this attitude, the new mastery levels are a farce.

Ben Sharpio9 votes

It's such a shitty system, i haven't been able to get any chests lately, just a bunch of key fragments. I actually find it very difficult to earn S's when i'm not playing a carry champion. I've seen adcs with lesser kill participation/objective participation get more S's while i get A's. I don't understand how this system works for people who don't play carry champions. I have gotten S-'s for sure, but its harder to get above that on non-carry champions. I guess ill just have to keep my mastery level 5...

WeedTits7 votes

It gets worse the more you think about it.

You can only open 40 chests per season.

There are 100+ champions.

You need a skin or champion shard for your champion to unlock 6 or 7 mastery.

You could potentially open all 40 chests for the season and you'd still only have a 1/3 chance of getting the shard you need.

Are you ready to open your wallet yet? (Truth be told you could blow a ton of money and STILL not get it)

Let's not even get into the fact that Rito basically just made gambling available to 12 year olds, which anyone with a brain knows is fucked up.

That isn't the problem, only a specific aftereffect. What you're really complaining about is how the game allows you to buy stuff with real money, which is a problem for all games (Hearthstone, WoW, Warframe and every other F2P MMO out there)

Mastery shouldn't cost blue essence. It doesn't make any sense. Maybe if this was implemented at the beginning of Hextech Crafting, when you were just getting your first chests with your best champions, there could be ways to work around it. Say, if you earned a chest and a mastery shard at the same time, it was for sure give you a shard or something to disenchant into blue essence.

Did you play any op champs in urf? (easy S and you get chests)

or you can just buy, like me, because I was impatient.
