Hey Riot. For future reference if you have to nerf champions because of an item you are adding

TheLittlestLulu··246 votes·6,556 views

the item is the problem.

Oh yeah also when it finally dawns on your balance team that the item is the problem and they nerf it, you should probably revert the nerfs on whatever champions you decided to make need the item to be viable.

That is all.

That's not necessarily true, it could be that the item serves a general purpose that is valuable, but because a small set of champions will likely buy the item and it will synergize with them TOO well they need to be adjusted a bit.

But yeah, if they nerf the item they should probably make sure to buff those champs back up.

her ult still does the same thing

people act as if she's trash now because she isn't god-tier freelo any more

the slight nerf on her aoe or whatever doesn't mean shit if you can't land an ult

IcyPepper14 votes

I'm not worried about the ult whatsoever, honestly.

Her ult was never the problem.

3TWarrior3 votes

lol, she used to be able to do 10% of your max hp in aoe magic damage per second

now, her ratio is 3% and that was only because of Cinderhuk's early game potential at the time, which was pretty good, but it got junglers out of afk farming...something riot has brought back with devourer

Champion Skin3 votes

Sejuani W has never ever dealt % of enemy health on the AoE part It has always scaled with Sejuanis health However yes the initial hit (single target and on time) deal % damage (it was moved from her Q to her W)

DemiluniS3 votes

yes it does, the % damage is aoe too, it's written in the skill description

LittleBlast5 votes

%their max hp on the aa, %of her max hp on the aoe.

Latex Choker2 votes

"Sejuani's next basic attack deals bonus magic damage to the target and nearby enemies. BONUS MAGIC DAMAGE: 4 / 4.5 / 5 / 5.5 / 6% (+ 3% per 100 AP) of target's maximum health"

The Empowered AA has an AoE too, albeit much smaller than the swinging of her flail afterwards. It's in her Tooltip and the League wiki.

But let's downvote people who are actually correct.

Champion Skin14 votes

You know that pretty much never happens right? Riot pretty much never undo nerfs after a champion is nerfed because of an item and then the item is nerfed

RIP AP Rengar who lost 30% of his AP ratios because apparently he was OP with DFG

Ha, remember when AP Tristana was a thing?

Ah, yeah.

I guess preserving off builds is not a priority.

Kind of like how if they buffed Thornmail too much, Rammus would become stupidly good while on other characters it would be ok.

So I want to add an item that would be wonderful for 100 champions, but make one of them a little bit too powerful and suddenly it's the item's fault. Thanks for the clarification, I just, I had some things mixed up, you know? With Utilitarianism and stuff. No biggie. Great thread. +10.

Just look at devourer. This item is an absolute balance nightmare.

An item with 50 on hit magic damage that doubles all on hit effects every second hit. What could possibly go wrong?!

LeeDark8 votes

Actually, Devourer is the best example of how little your whiny little thread was needed. I haven't seen any major nerfs to the heavy Devourer abusers, like Yi. Instead, Riot knew from the beginning that Devourer itself was overtuned and have been steadily nerfing it to bring it in line.

the Anarchit3cht2 votes

Warwick. He's the poster boy for this thread. Something about Devourers breaking his attack speed or making his ult do way too much damage. So they nerfed his W cooldowns and R cooldowns + dmg. Well they nerfed devourer and didn't change his CDs back. Which considering WW needs his R to gank, is pretty bs. Don't get me wrong, he is still hella strong and one of my all time favorite junglers.

Sejuani (Cinderhulk) Veigar (DFG)

Maybe don't think about a worst case scenario and instead look at the common case that has happened over and over.

Voluug1315 votes

DFG Veigar was never the problem.

Say hi to the real problem abusers of DFG:

Ahri Fizz Katarina Leblanc Syndra

Champion Skin20 votes

Rengar Apparently this guy too... that was the reason they gave for nerfing his W AP ratio

Chromatic Eagle4 votes

Where's Garen?

LeeDark3 votes

The difference was that Garen couldn't DFG, ult, and get a big heal in the deal, too. Rengar ulted in, DFG, W, killed you and healed whatever damage your team did to him.

RasCaelestis5 votes

She rides a boar. The correct word is overbearing, but DemaciaClown (fitting name) modified it into a pun to involve Sej's mount of choice, changing it to un-boar-able.

Much of a joke is lost when explained, but it seemed necessary here.

macromite1 votes

sion jungle lost any hope of being viable though.

BubbyBlast2 votes

cinderhulk nerfed into the ground? why not nerf it again. riot doesnt care about you they just want players to buy their shit by changing metas and make people want to buy skins for certain champs by buffing them.

Squibaunto8 votes

It's a mixture that some champions have overpowered kits, they just don't have an item to pursue and make that kit strong as hell.

Sejauni for instance was only underpowered due to her horrific clear times in the past. As a champion, she was insane. Enter the Cinderhulk. Sejauni's weakness is vanquished by a single item and her true abilities shine. Then she takes the nerf bat. She's still great, and in a place she needs to be, but not with sated/botrk meta that is running rampant. Nerf the devo, you get the tanks back.

Juggernaut Jesus7 votes

item 3070 Warwick item 3070

AbyssionKnight5 votes

I understand your logic there, but that's not entirely true.

If an item is meant to be used in the jungle, it's balanced for 95% of champions in jungle, but 5% abuse it, then there's no reason to nerf the item, since that in turn is a nerf to 95% of its users, while presumably just putting the 5% that use it at a 'balanced' level. That means you didn't actually solve the issue at all, since the champions that originally abused the item are still going to be stronger with that item than anyone else.

It makes significantly more sense to instead nerf the champions that are unintentionally strong when using that item.

Voluug135 votes

Going by that logic why was Cinderhulk even nerfed after the Sejuani nerfs?

It was balanced for Amumu and every other non-problem jungle tank.

But i was nerfed anyways.

AbyssionKnight2 votes

That's a unique instance, since Cinderhulk was a strong item both in the jungle and in top lane. Riot is known for disliking jungle items in the lanes. If one or two champions are able to do it they are fine with that, but when smite pushes other summoner spells from a lane, purely due to an item, there's an issue.

In that specific instance the item should have been nerfed before the champion because they wanted to stop the item from being so efficient in lane. Had the item not made its way into top lane, then I do think just nerfing sejuani probably would have been enough.

I do agree though that nerfing sejuani and cinderhulk at the same time was extreme though, as it seriously hurt sejuani as a champion. That was a mistake on Riot's part.

BluePolarizer7 votes

alot of people want to see summoner spell diversity and non-mandatory flash. Cinderhulk gave us that.

the Anarchit3cht3 votes

They should just remove flash for a patch or two and see how people react. Not react as in the 2381921873 whining thread posts, but react in how they adapt their gameplay.

BoundaryBreaker4 votes

This would be really interesting to see, I'll admit. However, it would also be like Riot just giving all immobile champs (Coughcough Ashe Coughcough) a massive middle finger and saying #YOLO to all mobile champs... i.e: Vayne.

I see downvotes in my future XD

the Anarchit3cht2 votes

Well they already have the middle finger with a a 500 rng blink on a 5 minute cool down compared to what everyone else gets.

Auryiel2 votes

Except Cinderhulk and Smite by extension was mandatory on certain champions. Just because it's not Flash that's picked 100% of the time for certain champions doesn't mean there is diversity, it just means the best option has shifted.

Diversity would be picking Exhaust or Ignite depending on lane match ups.

Champion Skin11 votes

The problem is when they first nerf the champion And then they nerf the item on top of that... which a lot of the time ending up with the champion ending up in a rather weak state... (and they are often left there for a long time)

AbyssionKnight4 votes

I agree that champions who get nerfed due to an item, and then that item gets nerfed is a bad thing.

However that's an issue with Riot failing to consider their past issues rather than an issue with the strategy of nerfing the champion before the item.
