It's only a matter of time before Riot suddenly doesn't have the resources for it.

inb4 Definitely not Twisted Treeline

Changes include another lane, the addition of another epic monster, and the removal of altars. Well shit that's just SR. Might as well not even bother than.

At first I laughed at this, then I died a little bit inside because I play 3s a lot. :(

Riot will get rid of it when it is no longer worth the money to maintain. That's how a company works.

WoonStruck21 votes

Dominion didn't take any money to maintain.

Can't use servers as an excuse, since a game of Dominion is exactly the same as a game on SR as far as that goes. It just loads a different map-file. The servers that host the games are not exclusive to certain modes.

Saying its not worth saving the files is moot because it does not take much data to hold it, and they keep it around for DND anyway.

The people paid to balance it? Lol. They just didn't do their job. Riot could fire them and we could keep Dominion. Win-win.

Giving it a visual update to be 'up to standard'? Well, considering people would rather have it than not, having it is a better option. They don't have to update it, and if they did, it wouldn't take an exorbitant amount of money to solve. Hell, they could probably make it a 'community creation' type deal where people volunteer to do it.

Queue detracts from SR player pool? Make it a custom game only. Most people used it for hide-and-seek and other games.

Bots overwhelming the Queue? See above.

billxx2 votes

Fire those people and keep dominion. the game mode being impossible to balance even close to what we have on SR, and you would fire them for that? Would you fire an artist because you told him to paint a masterpiece but gave him crayons? Also, firing them means no one is working on dominion, no one wants those jobs because it's impossible to balance, so they have to close down dominion anyway.

WoonStruck3 votes

If someone is hired for a job and it is not done, whether that is because it cannot, or because the employee did not do it, they get let go.

One is called getting laid off (somtimes even getting transferred rather than fired). The other is simply getting fired for incompetence (sometimes people are transferred in this case as well).

I'm assuming you haven't spent time in the real world yet.

Ulquiorra9954 votes

Every game mode is "impossible to balance" when you don't even try to do so. They promised map-specific balance changes, went with it for like 3 patches and then they were "nah, too much work for a map that isn't Summoner's Bigplays Rift.

And yes, I would fire someone who didn't to the job they were given. That's how jobs work; you do your work and get paid. You don't do it and you lose your job.

Riot will get rid of it when it is no longer worth the money to maintain. That's how a company works.

And people will start filtering out like they do in so many other games with companys that make that decision, and then they start making no money at all. You remove one thing a small group likes, they leave, and you do it a few more times, and more leave. It is a domino effect that takes time to see, but it has happened to so many good games, and by the time the company notices, it is too late.

They already removed:

  • Dominion
  • The Option for Solo Queue
  • Team Builder
  • Ranked 5s teams

That isn't even counting holiday events and so on.

If this game was nothing but Summoner's Rift and ARAM, then this game would get real friggin boring, and it is already hitting that spot after years of playing, and all the negative changes they've made this season (for me personally, not speaking for some imaginary majority with this last paragraph).

And that's how you piss off a playerbase and have people quit, including myself.

Dameshi27 votes

It's already dead. The items specific to the map have not been updated to compensate season changes including masteries, champion updates, and other item (aka mage update) changes. The meta is so off kilter and the map has become very snowbally.

They need to decide if they want to support the map, preferably with its own balance team, and make it an alternative competitive venue or scrap it totally. It's current state is despicable.

The above statements are my opinions and should be taken with a grain of salt

Serpents Embrace3 votes

I think this is sort of what they were talking about, though.

It's clear that resources aren't being used on TT, so it's likely that just hosting the map as an option is probably a limited time deal at this point.

Papa Andrei3 votes

Its not super snowbally, i have played over 60 minute games on TT frequently, there is NO meta, which is amazing, it has got almost all items updated and current to fit the map, except qss which still removes all debuffs >:D

Minarde3 votes

Just because it's not as strict as SR's doesn't mean TT doesn't have a meta. The most basic question is whether a team runs a support or a jungler. If you're interested, here's a detailed guide on 3v3 gameplay and strategy written by some Challenger players.

TotalJerk3 votes

Even if not a team. One guy keeping an eye on Treeline would put the map in an infinitely better state. It's pretty much a fact that literally no one at Riot gives any real consideration to Treeline until people complain.

ShatoSummoner3 votes

Which saddens me quite a bit because its a much more fluid and dynamic map than SR in my opinion. It honestly just feels more fun often times, and can be good for helping you communicate better with friends.

Won't happen. Not only are you misquoting riot on purpose for the sake of a straw man, but there are other direct logical statements about this that contradict you. For one, the number of players who play 3s has consistently been over triple that of dominion. Queue times for 3s never surpassed three minutes or so on average in all my years on the mode (and I have over a thousands 3s games). There has been for many years a ranked teams competitive atmosphere on twisted treeline and though it is temporarily not there at the moment I fully expect a dynamic queue version to return in the future (possibly involving clubs).

Additionally rioters have stated that they found the game mode to be healthier in terms of meta and require less extreme balancing measures and technical testing than dominion since it functions as a mini summoners rift instead of a totally different node capture based game mode.

3s isn't going anywhere,

I don't know the numbers on tree line but they announced 0.5% of players played dominion.

Why the hell would they continue to support that?

cocacolalips12 votes

0.5% of a million players is still 5000 players. That's more people than lotta indie games out there.

Vistha Kai11 votes

And last time we heard there were 67 million people playing League, so that's 335 fucking thousand people who got the boot.

RoodToob7 votes

As much as i agree, many many many were bots, so that number is definitely higher than the actual amount of people and as well, your numbers are way off. Its 335 000 players (or 335,000 if you are american) seeing as 0.5% of a million is 5 000, and 67 million players, thus 5 000x67= 335 000

Vistha Kai2 votes

Yeah, I noticed that even before reading your post. I haven't put enough zeroes, so I ended up calculating it as 5%, not 0.5%.

Still considering Riot's polls and other ass-pulled statistics, am I really far off?

I don't remember correctly, but I think it was 0.5% daily. I'm sure there were people playing Dominion only on weekends and I'd still count those people as "regular" players, no?

Ulquiorra9952 votes

Bots were a symptom, not something that was always there. People simply saw a mode developers didn't give a damn about and abused it. If Riot put in 5% of effort they put into SR, there would've been much less bots and much more actual players.

Snowplosion4 votes

335,000 out of 67,000,000 isn't worth it in my opinion.

Remlap12234 votes

It's shitty to say, but you're right. 0.5% is so statistically insignificant, it's not even worth mentioning.

Kürama1 votes

Keep in mind that .5% spent money on this game.

Snowplosion2 votes

Probably not all the .5% percent. Still for the amount of money Riot is making, it is probably more cost efficient to lose the 335,000 people than pay a large team of workers and designers around it.

Kürama1 votes

We don't need a large team. 10 people working to ensure everything's balanced, working properly and fixing design problems or updating the map a bit is perfectly fine with us.

Snowplosion2 votes

Trust me, you are going a LOT more then ten people for a balance team.

I don't know the numbers on tree line but they announced 0.5% of players played dominion.

Because variety is nice, and people prefer having a choice of variety, even if they don't take that choice EVERY time. Having NO variety is annoying, and is makes things kind of boring quite frankly.

I'd rather have say, Twisted Treeline there as an OPTION to play, then have only Summoner's Rift and no other maps and modes at all.

1 in 100 of my games aren't Summoner's Rift (I'd say it is closer to 10 realistically, but I can't be bothered to go look for sure, so betting low). So I guess that is reason enough to just delete them completely so I won't have the option to ever do them again?

and aram. we were told we'd get it like 3 months ago ;;

EcchiOtakuTM3 votes

Twisted Treeline died when the map was changed. Now it's just You pick a bruiser or a bruiser-like champ (tanks who have damage, assassins, or top tier mages) or you'll have a bad time.

Old map allowed a lot more champs to be usable and much more fun jungle since it wasn't just literally 3 camps.

Minarde5 votes

Wasn't the old jungle worse because it had random camps? Meaning your clear could be devastated purely because the "wrong" camps spawned?

You also seem to be ignoring that period when double Mage was common. Or when Marksmen+Support was fairly standard. Bruisers are certainly the easiest to play, but it's not like they've always reigned uncontested on new TT.

EcchiOtakuTM1 votes

The old jungle was more fun than the small crap they call a jungle for 3s now tho.

And so far from everything I've seen the one who can win TT the best are top tier mages, and low gold requirement champs which are normally bruisers everyone else is either too squishy for the bruiser-styled gameplay. This is off-topic but the main reason why I liked ascension is cause it's what the new TT TRIED to do but without all the makeup of winions and turrets given how small that map is, unadulterated slug fest.

Also while there might have been periods of double mages or adc+supp before you could pick them all constantly. While now majority of the time you better pick a champ who can play a bruiser's game or you're going to have a bad time.

Minarde2 votes

More fun, maybe. Much more headaches competitively though because of the randomness.

From what I remember, bruisers were just as common on old TT too. Granted it's been years, so my memory's a bit fuzzy. Perhaps you've just gotten better and recognize the strengths of bruisers on TT now?

And TT was never intended to be the immediate bloodbath that Ascension is. Faster-paced than SR for sure, but the laning phase ramp-up has always been part of the design. Admittedly the specific length of that ramp has varied.

Papa Andrei4 votes

Normally always play an adc or assassin on TT and still do good, There IS NO META. :)

bloodmoth3 votes

Its really quite interesting to see how difficult league is to balance and how every single champ must be balanced for only one single map.

Hots on the other hand has random rotating game modes all with different objectives where you can pick whatever hero you want into it.

I think this is the nature of having an item system though,

The bot problem is still there. I never saw bots in Dominion because I was in high elo, but that didn't mean Dominion wasn't absolutely swarming with them.

New players trying to get into Dominion would end up quitting because all they would see was bots. With Dominion deleted the bots have all migrated to TT, and I guarantee you new players of TT are experiencing the same thing now.

Dominion had a dedicated pool of players in the higher elos, but that didn't matter if new players were pushed away by bots. I know Riot too well to believe they won't make the same decision to completely ignore the botting problem while it strangles the gamemode.
