I do one trick Jayce, and I one tricked him when he was considered a dumpster champ when he built tear, so I didnt hop on the bandwagon with lethality jayce.
But anywho, that doesnt mean I cant play someone like

Also WuKong is very strong top lane when he abuses lethality, and I see him a lot more when I play on my high elo accounts.
If you want to carry as a top laner, you have to be a one trick top laner. Then when you become good with the one champ, youll do a lot better on others. But each champ has its own different role.
Jayce: You want to get as fed as possible early game, then when mid game comes you just roam. Abuse lethality, rarely show up in lane, just roam. The only time you go top lane is when a wave is pushing under your tower, or the enemy top laner is over pushing and you can kill him easily.
Kayle: You want to abuse the enemy top laner with your Ranged AoE and get perfect farm. Kayle is a late game champ that does the best damage for a top laner, and has the most potential to 1v5 unless the enemy has strong cc. Even when behind she can still ult the friendly adc and win team fights easily.
Nasus: Pretty obvious. Get stacks and non-stop split push to enemy inhibs, the enemy will either avoid you meaning you get inhibs, or theyll all go to kill you which means your team should get objectives/farm safer.
Xerath: Only I play Xerath top because being a Jayce one trick I rarely miss Skill shots, which is what Xerath is all about. You basically farm and harass with Q all game with full AP Runes, then roam and stun enemies. Easy kills, easiest farm of your life, and late game he melts towers faster than a jayce would.
Tanks: Peel your adc. CC enemy adc. Pretty simple.
As you can see, every champ has its role. And top, being one of the hardest roles to carry from and play, means you have to be one tricking something so you can fix every little mistake you make. Then when you switch to a different champ, youll be able to find your mistakes more easier.
tldr;
Top is the hardest role to carry from. Youre going to want to onetrick a champion if youre ever gonna want to rank up and carry from the top lane. Every champion has its own role. Farm, win lane, roam, win.
) And the most optimal picks top lane are tanks with lots of CC because they can live ganks way better then squishy carries, and can sit on their island and farm up to become disgustingly tanky. Not to mention top lane recently has had picks that are so out of the window trash that it isn't even funny anymore. Never will I see a 
top ever again. My suggestion is to tune down the viability of the early game, so that ganks aren't so important. I would also tune down some tanks that completely break the top lane meta like 
who performs the job of an assassin carry and a tank at the same time.
