What to do when you cant farm?

High elo players. What is the best thing to do when you find yourself in a lane unable to farm either because the matchup doesn't favor you like say you're Akali going again a Swain. Or the other player is just very very good at poking you for 1/2 your HP when you try to CS(Good Varus players come to mind). Is it ok to accept them getting 30 cs while you have 7 and just farm XP ?

I play a lot of Nasus so I know the struggle lol.

A few things you can do:

  1. Long term solution: just learn to farm under turret. In your Elo the opponent is unlikely good enough to disrupt your farming under turret. Make sure to farm with auto-attacks and not skills. You may need your skills to be up or to have mana in case there is a sudden engage.
  2. Short-term solution: Request a gank. This does not always work, if the gank fails terribly (say a double kill) you are way behind and probably lost lane. If the gank only fails moderately (no enemy death) you will make the opponent consider their further aggression. They won't want to overextend for fear of the jungler/especially if they blew flash. This provides you a temporary time frame to farm safely. If the gank succeeds you will probably be strong enough to farm safely. I don't request ganks often because I play in the top lane and typically I can hold my own fine.
  3. Freeze the wave: try to do this if you can, this means to DO NOT Auto attack minions so the wave goes to your half of the map. Also pay attention when your opponent goes to CS. If you approach CS at the same time as they approach theirs you can "trade" CS. If they choose to harass you instead of taking CS then no one gets anything except you lose some HP. Timing is important, I am still working on this myself, but you will find windows where you can simply trade CS with the opponent.
  4. Give up the tower: Sometimes you have to do this in order to not be denied further CS. You do this if you are way behind in CS, XP, and the tower is at less than half health. Once you give up the tower it often opens up the ability to CS since the laner will likely roam and avoid over extending. I typically only give up towers if I am way behind in CS and in levels AND I am taking harassment under turret and the opponent can dodge or avoid turret aggro while doing it. I tell my teammates that I am giving up the tower too.
  5. Opponent freeze wave: This happens more often in my situation when I screw up wave management. I ask the jungler to come top ONLY to help me shove the wave to the turret so that the wave resets. Sometimes simply reseting the wave will lead to more opportunities to CS.
  6. Ask for the support to come to your lane. If your ADC is very ahead it is a reasonable request. I play support as my secondary and when I know my ADC is fine I will go to a struggling lane if they still have their tower up. Doesn't happen often, but it has happened enough times in-game to not be unusual.

Hmm, #6 never crossed my mind, but should be doable more often if the jungler is just the farming type.

this ^^^^^

its what i always do in unfavorable lane matchups

works really well just time your last hitting with theirs so they cant rally use auto's to harrass and if they use abilities you get to freeze just outside of tower range so theyr are vulnerable to ganks

works very well

Consider investing in sustain if you aren't locked into rushing a certain core build. There are numerous Lifesteal items that AD Champs can use to get a health return just by farming waves.

Health Regneration is also an option that often goes overlooked when it comes to surviving lane. If you're a champion whose packing something like %hp damage or HP-scaling damage or true damage or something like that, and you aren't the type of champ who needs to dump the bulk of the gold-income into steroiding your damage up to make trades, then these will heal you in between pokes--without the need to even touch the wave, or enemy champions either. HP5 items perform relative to your champions base-health regeneration, however, and are generally a poor purchase on champions like Gnar who are at a near-complete deficit of it. Champions who have massive base-HP5 values will get a huge return out of them, like Sion or Leona.

You could even use both. Ravenous hydra gives lifesteal AND HP5--throw some HP5 runes in there, with the HP5 and bonus-healing masteries, an armor+hp item and a Spirit Visage and you'll be healing quite a bit. The tradeoff is a smaller health-pool, which makes you more prone to getting bursted down, but if you have the option then it could very well be worth it.

Ask for a Gank or do jungle camps when lane is pushed or freeze lane as much as possible or roam and gank with jungler. Many things you can do.

Take only safe CS that won't result in damage trade, and stay around only for the exp soak as you mentioned at the end of your post.

Because when all else fails, you need to atleast stay even in levels if you may not keep up in gold in the lane.

Fair enough. But you will have a massive cs deficit regardless. Won't that greatly affect your ability to have an impact on the game ?

I find myself dying a lot in such lanes because its too hard for me to watch a guy farm up 40 cs while I'm struggling to hit 15. I always end up making some bold play that ends with me dying half the time. Calling for jungle ganks is the best solution but in Bronze as a solo player, I can't rely on this. I'm wonder if its possible for someone to still carry a game with a massive cs deficit while playing extremely passive.

It is very possible to still carry the game if you are behind in comparison to your lane opponent. It's all about using your champion to it's maximum potential and having that team synergy.

Its much easier to farm back deficit than deal with fed champion after all ;p

if you lost lane vs trynd u can't stay in xp zone

I think, first and foremost, you need to play safer champions if you dont know what your match-up is. Akali is hardly an example of safe laning.

On advice for the actual circumstance, Swiftstrike4 made a pretty good ist of choices.

simply give up cs, don't go for cannon minion and then die

as akali vs swain u wanna push him in and harras him with Q because after level 6 that is hard lane, he will fuck up 100% so u'll be able to proc Q, but make sure to push because he sucks at farming

Depends a bit on the pick, but generally you should try to get some jungle farm if your jungler is on the other side of the map(i really often take gromp/krugs as toplaner in a bad matchup), else try to atleast stay in xp range till you have all needed skills to gank(on most champs, that's lvl 3, on akali it would be 6) Once you have the needed level, try to roam to other lanes, invade the jungle together with your jungler, try to get some gold via kills/assists and objectives. If your opponent builts up a big wave, call for the help of your jungler, not for a real gank atampt but to provid savety while you farm the wave.

This all is asumeing you really struggle hard to get any cs without risking to die. Without initial mistakes/jungle-impact, nearly no matchup is that bad that you can't farm somewhat savely underneath your turret. Yes, you will drop alot cs, but generall you usually can keep up in xp and hold the rower till your get some gear and levels. And always watch up for opportunities to impact other lanes. Even with a horrud farm, if your not totally underleveled, a numbers advantage will always be a big deal, helping to swing around botlane fights or help your jungler to fight of the opposing one. Just be carefull with your lane-opponents movements and don't commit to fights if you know he'll join since he obviously is stronger at than you and will have more impact on the fight at that time. Calling for aid from your jungler sure can help aswell, provided your not to far behind already which would risk a double kill for your opponent. Also, don't rely on your jungler, he might have other things on his mind, the map has 3 lanes, 4 jungle parts and some objectives after all, and ganking a loosing lane often is not worth the effort as the chances to get a kill are rather low, depending on how hard it is lost and how the matchup looks like.

Also, if you already fed like 3-4 kills somehow, just kepp farming as much as you can and oushing out waves, try to buy as much time as you can should they try to all in you. With 4+ deaths, your barly worth more than a minion wave, at that point tradeing a few waves for your live kinda is worth it, + the shutdown money of your opponent increases. This obviously is a emergency solution, idealy you play safe enough to not reach that point, but once it happens, it's good to keep in mind that death strikes reduce your gold value alot. Also, try to not get assists till the laneingphase is over in that case, as asissts reset your gold value.

Also, adjust your builts to be more cost efficient, focuseing purely on what your kob is in a teamfight. This means you go full tank on frontline champs with maybe ZZ-rot to counter push better, and it means either utillity builts or full damage builts for the rest. With utillity i mean something like frozenmallet on ranged ad to help peeling, or black cleacer to shred armor for your team. The only other option is full damage with not even one though wasted on def, just trade your life for that off an opposing one. That is an all or nothing approach, but desperate times require desperate messures. Again, this applies only if you fall behind REALLY hard.

I honestly think the first thing you should do is train your CSing.

It hurts less to take poke and know you got that CS than it does to take poke and miss the CS anyways.

Pika Fox1 votes

Play safe, take whatever farm you can get, try to stay in range for XP at the very least.

If your mid/jungle are able, ask if they can rotate early to apply pressure just so you can CS for a little bit and not fall extremely far behind. This doesnt need to be a kill, ideally even forcing them to back is good enough.

Do not push your lane.

If you play safe enough, its likely they will go elsewhere to gank. Notify your team, ward, and pray your team will react accordingly and not feed them more.
