@Repertoir So I heard you want Master Yi to channel Meditate

This conversation you had with Cowsep the other day got the attention of myself and many other Yi players. You covered a lot of topics, but I just want to focus on your question about Meditate: "What can we do to make channeling Meditate more attractive?"

This is an interesting question, because as you know and we know, the most common use for Meditate (among skilled players) is as an attack reset. You don't have to explain to me why you don't like that; I understand that it doesn't make sense thematically and it's contrary to the intended usage of the spell.

I'll tell you why we don't usually channel Meditate for more than a second:

  1. Channeling Meditate makes Alpha Strike's cooldown longer. Alpha Strike is our bread and butter; we use it to gapclose, secure kills, and dodge enemy spells. But the cooldown is very long if we're not constantly attacking. If I have 2.0 attack speed and I channel Meditate for 3 seconds, then that makes my Alpha Strike cooldown 6 seconds longer than if I continued attacking. That is more likely to kill me than the damage reduction and healing is to save me.

  2. Meditate is very easily interrupted. In many situations, I can't channel Meditate even if I wanted to. There are very few champions that can't stop it.

  3. Fights are very mobile. In any fight, you have one champion trying to attack and one champion trying to run away. Or you have a ranged champion trying to put distance between themselves and their melee opponent. In any of these situations, standing still to channel a spell is counterproductive. Zac works because his channels are for dashes with enough range to compensate for the time he could've been running. Fiddlesticks is a mess because his spells require an insane amount of standing and channeling. Enemies simply walk away from him when he drains them.

  4. Fully channeling Meditate isn't rewarding. Simply put, what is the point of Meditating? All I get is healing, cancelled out by all the damage that I took while Meditating. Master Yi is not a mage - a pseudo-Zhonya is useful on caster-type champions because during those 4 seconds one of their spells could come off cooldown, but we already established that Alpha Strike doesn't work that way. Master Yi can't passively deal damage to enemies around him, like Swain or Fiddlesticks can. Masters Yi wants and needs to keep attacking. RicklessAbandon experimented with giving Master Yi a combat bonus for fully channeling Meditate, and it was a good idea in concept. It only fell flat on its face because he nerfed the healing from Meditate, which would've made the spell even less useful and more hazardous to channel in combat than it already was.

Addressing any of these problems should lead to more players using Meditate as you want them to.

I think people vastly underestimate what Meditate already does : it's not just healing, or a bunch of % damage reduction ; it's a great

  1. anti-burst tool
  2. channeling meditate gives double strike (kinda random but eh)
  3. autoattack reset
  4. highlander/wuju style duration amplification

Make it actually immune to CC then I think it would be more common to channel for varying durations depending on the situation

They could give Yi an ability only usable after a full channel of meditate (replacing W for the duration)

That’s a bit of scope creep, but it lets Riot explore more options than simply adding power to existing mechanics.

They could then make the ability have only a short window to cast it, which could promote using the full channel in or directly before combat (i dont like the gameplay of using it in combat, and thats just silly to meditate in a fight anyway so i’d prefer it to lean towards combat preparation)

just throwing stuff at the wall

personally i dont like its use as a shield: his Q already lets him dodge almost anything in the game, which i’ve tormented TF players with countless times

I just wanted MasterYi to be to empower his Q to do like this ...

Not by himself offcours, that would be broken.

I posted before about how Riot should stop making new champs and work more on unusual interactions between available champs.

For example, Zilean use ult on a full hp ulting MasterYi to make him empower Q but get stunned after finishing it.

This will make supps more than just ADC bitches.
