Fuck Morellonomicon.

It's funny, because I primarily just build it for the mana and cdr. The grievous wounds is just an added bonus.

That's what I hate about it, Your putting the passive on an item that already core for most mages. 100 AP 20% CDR, and a passive that restores large amounts of your mana.

Fortunately, the grievous wounds only applies after one is down to 35% HP. Which is probably their to counterbalance the fact that a mage could otherwise apply it to the whole team with one spell. Though do to that fact, you really can't rely on it just to counter a drain tank. Which makes executioners the better option if you need to specifically counter a high sustain champion that's getting out of hand.

Xonra1 votes

Pretty much that first sentence 100%. If it didn't have grievance wounds and had the same cost and stats, I'd still first buy it.

Spice POWAH4 votes

Of course no one remembers about item 3123 item 3033 . Most ADC, Juggernauts, Fighters, etc can also apply it to a whole team, although not for a long duration. I still don't get why hardly anyone uses it...

RocketRelm2 votes

Soraka DrMundo Ahri on the enemy team?

Better build item 3036 , it's the ultimate counter.

(I wish I was merely making a joke here instead of using a real-life example)

agbudar10 votes

item 3033 sure no one at my elo builds this but i hate this more

khorney1 votes

why build that when lord dom is way better. ill take the dps over the grievous wounds, only perosn that people build this on is agaisnt swain and maybe the mundo if u see him

The thing about that item is that you have to make a conscious decision to get it and there are trade-offs for having it. Every mage just builds Morellonomicon regardless.

Fondling Gems11 votes

Don't be silly, there are mages that don't build it. Specifically every mage that kills over an extended period of time.... Y'know, the ones that actually make use of grievous wounds.

TotalJerk5 votes

Admittedly I was exageratting, but like 80% of mages build that item every game regardless and probably would even if the passive was outright removed.

Fondling Gems1 votes

I was just joking off the fact that the passive has the worst synergy with the mages buying the item. Grievous wounds would be best applies by any kind of Drain tank or AP bruiser type best because they are the ones who care about enemies sustaining through their damage. Yet they rarely buy the item because it's stats aren't great for that type of mage.

Instead grievous wounds is on the item almost exclusively bought by burst mages and the like. The passive has terrible synergy with the champs buying it because they want to 100-0 you, not wear you down.

Baron of Bread1 votes

The Grievous Wounds lasts 8 seconds, so it actually isn't bad on bursty mages. If they don't quite kill you they should have their spells back up before the GW wears off, making it so they can be sure to finish you off.

Fondling Gems1 votes

But burst champions should be able to 100-0. At the very least they should be able to 80-0. That means that even W/O grievous wounds you should have to heal back ~60% of your health before their next full combo, and most of them have shorter Cd spells anyways because Morello gives 20% CDR and a lot of different mage items give 10%.

The mages who actually care about grievous wounds are the ones that don't 100-0 you. Poke mages like Xerath, drain tanks like Vlad and Swain. A couple others like Rumble, Cass, Evelynn (Not full AP).

It is the mages who output consistent DPS that care about Grievous wounds, just like how the AD champs that buy Mortal Reminder are ADC's who are able to apply from afar and more importantly do sustained DPS and want to cut down sustained healing.

It isn't bad on Burst mages, but is grievous wounds really bad on any champion? No, but a lot of champions don't really care about it, especially bursty champions because shields are there to counter burst, healing exists to counter DPS (Shields tend to be larger but don't last, Healing tends to be less but effectively exists until you die/would heal to full naturally meaning it is the counter to sustained damage champions, and as such sustained damage champions care more about healing than shields.)

Oh the irony

Fondling Gems3 votes

I specialize in Irony, must be from all the item 2138 I drink.

JavelinJoe2 votes

you sure it isn't from item 3190 ?

Fondling Gems1 votes

Nah, not a big jewelry fan. It is pretty enough but I couldn't imagine wearing a locket on a day to day basis. An elixir though, that is basically a protein shake, and that means it is my breakfast.

TeCoolMage1 votes

actually morellonomicon is considered bad by lissandra mains, extremely niche by anivia mains, a bit too slow for swain mains and of course isn't built on champions like kennen

SzGamer2272 votes

Basically any champion that primarily buildsitem 3027 takes it instead of item 3165, Brand TwistedFate Annie Kassadin being among those.

TeCoolMage1 votes

I wasn't sure about kass or tf at all but I had no clue brand didn't take morello along with annie since they're so combo based and want early CDR a lot

Papa Andrei1 votes

well it depends. do they have alot of burst damage? Get Roa, are you able to safely sit in the back and spam, go Morello

YumaS2Astral2 votes

I generally like to take Morello regardless. The CDR is just too good to pass up.

9 X3 votes

Well it's not due to a lack of options...

Oh wait, actually it is due to a lack of options.

fuck the fact that grievous wounds needs to be on the most general AP item for healing champions to be balanced tbh

Morello is the balanced GW item, in comparison.

I hate how lifesteal hinders the balancing of all healing champs

RedCyclone2 votes

why not both? Sona item 3165

General Esdeath 2 votes

plays a lot of healing champs Doesn't notice item 3123

I'm calling bs on your title. Morello requires you to be low while calling applies at all HP %

TotalJerk7 votes

Someone has to make the active decision to divert 800 gold away from their main build before you see that. item 3165 is often some shit that most people would have built regardless.

DarkRitual2 votes

400 mana and one of the only 20% cdr items that's left is pretty attractive as a first item.

Fondling Gems1 votes

Honestly it offers way more than that. Morello is generally my 2nd-3rd item after ludens and boots on Ahri because rushing a forbidden codex is basically required in lane. After I have already sunk 900 Gold into an item path with only one upgrade and that upgrade still offers some of the highest AP, tied for highest CD, and helps keep my mana up as I transition to killing more often than I level there is just no reason not to buy it if you use a lost chapter in lane.

Only time I don't end up building it is if I have to rush an Abyssal in lane, and that is because Ludens + boots are a priority for me. At that point the stats are nice but lost chapter is a weak buy by itself, there are a lot of component items, and most of the good stats on it require the final combination to be really worth it. That is pretty much the only situation in which I might not buy it because at that point I have to build to fit the enemy team which could mean anything from rylais to liandries.

General Esdeath 1 votes

Most ad champs will build item 3035 and an item 3123 mixes with it into item 3033

As someone who plays against healing/shield champions a lot I have three words to say

Fuck Healing Champs.

Seraphic Siren2 votes

The only healing champion that I hate is Soraka because she does not require that much skill and just spam healing. So annoying and noxious. and yes, you deserve people getting healing reduction item likeitem 3123 item 3033 , item 3165 is just nothing. Its passive only actives conditionally which no one cares.

TotalJerk2 votes

Soraka requires good positioning if the enemy team isn't ignoring her and she doesn't use that bullshit tanky warmog's build (which I really wish Riot would kill because it isn't fun to play as or against).

Also, Morellonomicon activates almost EXACTLY when most Soraka players want to ult, since her ult scales with missing health.

Seraphic Siren1 votes

I mean which support doesn't require good positioning. Soraka even has the speed buff running to fleeing ADC/Mid laner. Unless you are Janna, who already has a good movement speed for positioning and skillset for super super disengage. Other squisy support, like nami, sona, lulu, they both have the same problem that once enemy gets closed and attack them, they don't build tank= instant vanished.

BlueBilberry1 votes

Morey is actually not a bad option for AP for healing supports. Why? Well, support champs do not earn large amounts of money quickly. And at least you can gradually earn parts of the Morellonomicon piecemeal (e.g., item 1052 item 3802 item 3108 ), giving you a small bump in AP as you work your way up to the full item. (In that way, it's better than the Death's Cap item 3089 -- where you can literally have no spaces to put new items as you build up to final item. Any item that includes Needlessly Large Rod item 1058 kills me - more often than not, both cost-wise as well as space-wise.)

He's talking about the 8 seconds grevious wounds

Automated Riven3 votes

i dont play healing champs. And I legit think that the GW lasts way to long.

ZT Xperimentor1 votes

Too bad there's 2 cheaper items that apply grievous wounds more consistently.

xevi1 votes

Morello is a core item for most mages anyways. They build it no matter what because of the mana, cdr, and ap it gives so they aren't going out of their way by an extra 800 gold to get Greivous Wounds

ZT Xperimentor1 votes

Vlad & mord don't build it for mana lol. And marksmen aren't going out of their way if they're fighting a sustain tank.

xevi2 votes

implying vlad and morde build it at all

and why bring them up at all. Rarely are they ever picked and morde is far from what one would call a mage.

ZT Xperimentor1 votes

I've seen vladimir build it since there's not many high cooldown reduction options for him. Mordikaiser was a magic bruiser before his failure of a rework.

You are better off using CDR runes then purchasing 3 of those 4 items: item 3158 item 3001 item 3157 item 3152 (there is also item 3065 although I prefer Abyssal for the extra damage) I am talking about Vlad. On Morde, it is sadly difficult to get CDR for him. That said, I would still not get Morello because it is too much gold wasted on mana, and this item does not offer tankyness, which is something that Morde needs very much because of his mediocre base stats.

Although Morellonomicon actually used to be a viable option for Vlad back when it offered 20% CDR and some AP for an insanely low price. Seriously, it was that cheap, although it used to have mana regen instead of flat mana. The mana regen was wasted, but it didn't matter, because this item was so insanely cheap that some mages would purchase 2 Morellos.
