A (hopefully) Helpful Guide for Finding Your Main

I've been seeing threads asking for help in finding a champion to main. While I believe that it is important to know how to play a multitude of different roles so that you may easily fill in the gaps your team compositions may have during champ select, I also feel that having a main to lean on is important as well. Having a main and playing it for long enough can act as a foundation for further development, and eventual movement into other roles/champions the game has to offer.

The first thing I believe anyone should do before seeking a main champion is to seek a main role/roles (You can main more than one role just like you can main more than one champion) Take a hard look at each role and determine which one lines up with your goals for playing the game. As for me, I love the 1v1 aspect. So that narrows 5 choices down to 2 choices, mid and top. I also prefer melee champions. That still leaves 2 choices as there are still melee options in mid (Assassins, of course). I very much enjoy the idea of being that huge behemoth in the fight that soaks up all of the damage, laughing at how little it does to me compared to the rest of my team, and retaliating by keeping the enemy team locked down so my team can help me out by killing them before they kill me. So, tanks. That narrows it down to top lane and bottom lane support (Which clashes with my love of the 1v1 fantasy, but just for the sake of thinking about it, it's a possibility). But am I peeling, or engaging? I see myself as an engager, so top lane it is

Basically, keep asking yourself what it is you would enjoy doing the most in League and then use the answers to narrow down until you're left with the option/options that make the most sense.

Now for champions. This gets much more complicated, as there are 130 some odd choices as opposed to 5. There are a lot of different champions, and picking 1 or 2 to be your main champion can seem like a daunting task. Here's how I went about it. I picked Sion because I absolutely love his theme. He's this giant undead monster that scares the living shit out of anyone he starts walking or running at, and his personality drew me in. I wasn't the biggest fan of his kit when I first started learning him, but my love of his thematics and aesthetics helped me get over it, and now he's my go to champion. I've also recently started maining Ryze for the same reason, except I also loved the kit and what it stood for. The new Ryze's personality reminded me greatly of a cranky Doctor Who, and I loved that.

So basically, when looking for a champion to main, I think the most helpful thing is to look for a champion with a theme that you can synergize with. Look for champions that you could see yourself being in your craziest day dreams, and then try them out. If they happen to have a kit you don't mind, then you might already be on your way to having your main. Eventually you'll learn the tricks about your champion that others who haven't played your champion as much as you have won't know, and you'll feel all the more awesome because of it. Happy Hunting!

I'd also advise to find champions that answer a certain frustration. I hated when people ran away, but then I found the glory of CC through Sion.

I just had a certain love for being the guy who helps out. Which led to a long life of supporting, and a Mastery 7 Braum.
