Any ideas on a build to help Karthus power up faster?

I've loved Karthus since my earliest days of League, and lately I've been playing him a lot (trying to git gud enough to hit Mastery 7), and I've been finding myself kind of wishing Karthus wasn't so slow to pick up speed. Wondering if I should adjust my build for something that racks up kill power faster.

My core items tend to be the usual, item 3027 item 3020 item 3089 . Those two are nearly always what I try to build first. From there I sometimes build item 3040 for the fun of the AP boost it provides, but in general I find item 3151 item 3116 as Item 4 and 5 to be more reliable. Depending on game needs I'll finish the build with either item 3135 item 3157 or if I need MR for some reason item 3001 occasionally. Those last three may be bought earlier than Item 6 if needed.

What I seem to be seeing a pattern of is Karthus needing almost half the game to get strong enough to become a threat, while a lot of other champions start out strong out of the gate. I'd like to speed up his entry into Threat Zone.

Should I abandon item 3027 and get something with more immediate impact? Rush item 3135 sooner maybe?

Any advice is helpful, thank you.

So the fastest way to power, for any champion, is go duo jungle with a Nunu.

Nunu tanks and deals most of the damage to jungle mobs and you last hit them. Then you just circle the map a few times, pushing the enemy jungle out of their camps, and in about 15 minutes you have your entire build, and then some.

Then Karthus can just press R and nearly kill everyone.

I guess this is the Yi/Nunu thing people were taking about? (haven't seen it myself). What stops people from just five-man ganking the duo jungle, or camping the solo bot lane?

Nothing. They can either dedicate their time and money to warding the jungle and preventing Nunu and the other jungler from taking their camps, or they can dedicate to 3v1 bot.

Either making mid, top, and/or bot have to spend gold warding and leave lane whenever Nunu shows up in their jungle, or they ignore it and try and push for the quick victory with 3 bot.

As a Karthus main, here's my take on it.

If you're having issues being able to reach your late game potential because games aren't lasting long enough for you to do so, then perhaps you should orient into more of a mid-game strategy.

My personal preference for this is to go Domination (Electrocute for Lane, Predator for JG), using Cheap Shot, Eyeball collection, and Ravenous Hunter, with Precision secondary with Presence of mind (I love the Ult CDR I get from this, and it still works while dead) and Last Stand (Also works while dead, and you can replace with Coup if either A. you're against a very squishy comp, or you're just confident in dealing more damage before dying)

As for Items, I generally go Tear into immediate MPen because outside of R, Karthus's Q and E have high Base damages, but low AP Scalings. Scarra has also stated that as Karthus in SoloQ, Tear into MPen is the best route to go because you want that damage as early as you can. Afterward you can go ahead and either finish item 3003 for the CDR, item 3165 for the Grievous Wounds. Afterward it's all about preference; Is the enemy especially tanky? item 3151, Do you really need to slow down elusive targets? item 3116, Zed/Fizz/Yasuo? item 3157 (although I generally get it right after Tear when I do go against those particular champs).

Tear into MPen sounds like a good thing to try. My issue isn't so much game length, but in trying to power up to a point where I have an advantage rather than just remaining roughly equal to the enemy, and I think slow-building choices like RoA and Gathering Storm may be holding me back from pushing my leads even though they're statistically better in the long term, if that makes sense?

I don't fully understand how this is working tbh.
