The Vayne Fiasco (And My Opinion)

Troy242621··62 votes·5,117 views

Preface If you're here to downvote me for my opinion, you need only read the following line, down-vote and be on your way: I advocate changes to Vayne.

TO BE CLEAR ON MY OPINION, while I believe her design isn't conducive to a healthy gameplay experience, I'm not fully convinced she is overpowered; I think it can be debated either way.

For the rest of us that want to hear out an argument or two, let's press on. The goal of this thread isn't to convince you, and you're entitled to your opinion. I hope to just show a logical and coherent argument to try and articulate the points being raised against her accurately and concisely.

The main point I want to make is that her design is unhealthy. I'm not arguing if she is overpowered or not in this thread.

Exploring the Cause of Contempt Vayne is a very well-hated champion because she is a rare micro chasm of irritating design elements. She is:

  • Very safe (Condemn, Tumble, Stealth, always builds Bork which she synergizes with)
  • Duels extremely well, making it hard to stomp her, or duel her unless considerably ahead
  • Scales incredibly hard, so you are obligated to win lane just to go even.
  • Was made back in a time when "Crush them pre-6" was considered legitimate counterplay
  • Has a toxic playerbase that tells you that you were outplayed
  • Scales off of your defensive stats, making it hard to counter-build her

These all synergize. She scales incredibly hard and it's hard to counterbuild her, so she will inevitably be a monster provided she gets the right items. You then must stop her from getting them. However, everything in her kit works to try and prevent you from stopping her, due to her insane safety and duel potential. Screw up once, and a good Vayne will punish you unfathomably hard. Vayne screws up? As long as she plays it safe, she'll scale it off, unless her mistakes are utterly abysmal and frequent.

Nobody likes a champion that is extremely annoying, very strong and insanely difficult to punish. As soon as she's picked, you have to play HER game. The VAYNE game. Keep her behind then win before she scales back. This is why she is hated, in my humble opinion.

Poor Design is Not Necessarily Poor Balance While I think there is little to dispute in claiming Vayne's design is frustrating to deal with, and as much as I hate buzzwords, she is indeed toxic. She forces you to play her game, warping the lane around her far more than other other late game scaler. But, IS she overpowered? Let's explore her weaknesses, as we have discussed strengths. Sorry if I miss a few, I'm addressing the most common ones that I've seen.

  • Vayne's range is 550
  • She has no skills to extend her range of effectiveness
  • She is difficult to master
  • Early game bullies can shut her down/She's weak early
  • She can be counterpicked
  • You can counterbuild her

The first bullet is inconsequential; many ADCs have short range, hers not being the shortest. Her base AD is nothing to scoff at either, which is strange on a champion whose counterplay is intended to be weak early game. Kog'Maw and Twitch have an atrocious base AD. Hers is one short of Grave's Base AD, an early game dominating ADC.

The second bullet is legitimate; true, she cannot extend her range and this causes a deficit. However, she is a duelist, and she can close the gap to get INTO her effective range extremely easily. Post-6, it's nearly impossible to duel her unless she either mispositions, you out-play or have an advantage already. The final nail in this coffin is that being weak pre-6 is NOT a legitimate point for counterplay. Kassadin pre-nerf taught us this, Vayne pre-nerf taught us this and it's still the case now. Is this a weakness? ABSOLUTELY YES. Where I take issue with this one is that people over-sell how bad this is. Again, she is one of the safest and more mobile ADCs. She has all the tools to work around this weakness, and then some. You'll find this is the problem with Vayne in a nutshell; she works around every weakness while still having tremendous strengths. This is unfathomably annoying.

The third bullet is meaningless; people have gotten extremely good at her, and her skill floor isn't as high as it's made out to be. Most players can use her and be on-par with other picks, making mentioning difficulty a cop-out in my opinion. End point, she's not hard to play, and she's certainly not a complicated champion. She's just hard to master.

This next one irks me. Most of her counters have been nerfed, and every late game ADC has a weakness to early game ADCs, but Vayne has the benefit of being safe to aid in her survival early game. Simply counterpicking is not sufficient counterplay; Riot has said this, and it's common sense why. However, the most critical reason this argument is pretty poor is that, while she is weak early, SHE IS NOT VULNERABLE. She has such a tremendous amount of safety that, unless she misplays, she should really not die or lose that much CS. Given her elasticity from scaling so well, what losses she has can be swiftly recuperated.

This is basically the same point as the above, except someone like Malphite may be brought up because he can CC lock and builds ATKSPD drain items frequently. Same point can be raised as above, you may pick after Vayne, her counters may be banned and so fourth. However, it brings me to the next point.

You can counterbuild her to some effectiveness, but this applies to all ADCs; however, because of her Silver Bolts, she can ignore counterbuilding much more than any other ADC not named Kog'Maw. While Kog'Maw may eliminate counterplay here, he is immobile and has very little safety, poor dueling, weak laning and has dodgable skillshots. Vayne, in exchange for reducing counterplay here,...Has poor range, that she has the tools to work around.

Finally, a lot of these points argue that she is balanced.

Conclusion However, I made a strong case that her design itself just isn't healthy. Overpowered or no, we can debate this, but the toxicity of her kit is nearly indisputable. I hope that, if you still disagree, you can at least understand where some of us are coming from. When she's picked, you DEAL with Vayne. You put up with her. This and the fact she is strong has really irritated people lately, myself among them. . My goal isn't to convince people, but to present a reasonable case for discussion's sake. I sincerely hope that such a discussion, and not feuding, ensues.

People like to gloss over how every other ADC has been nerfed, and she hasn't. Her counters got ruined by constant nerf hammers to the face, meaning she is actually strong now, and Vayne players don't have to be afraid of picking her these days.

Edit: Yes, I'm a Vayne player, yes I think she snowballs too hard, and yes, there are a few ADCs that might need a tiny bit of help to put her back into a state of fear without pushing them over the edge of balance.

I don't get it,why is it everytime someone talks about bot lane bullies they immediately start talking about the adc,I thought adcs are supposed to be lategame characters...

Baseball3b4 votes

It's more a combination of early game ADC bullies getting nerved (Graves, Lucian, MF, Cait) and the seeming lack of zoning/poke supports (Zyra, Annie, old Sona)

Anidan2 votes

It's probably because early game carries are a thing because DotA has them as well. For everyone like Spectre and Medusa who are 6 item gods, there's a Weaver and a Drow Ranger who are good to go pretty damn early and stay good until much later, and this game did take a lot of cues from their parent game.

It's to keep variety. If you make all ADCs only strong in the late-game then you'll just play whoever is strongest in the late-game, with the only variation being the delivery of damage itself.

Though, when I think of lane bullies I think of people like Renekton, Darius, Teemo, Syndra, Zed.. Unless it's someone pretty damn good early like Graves I don't think about ADCs much when I hear the phrase 'lane bully.'

Dota early game carries fall off VERY HARD compared to their lategame counterparts, this doesn't happen with adcs.

NOPE. Twitch in ult. Kog in W rank 5. Jinx in rocket rank 5. Trist level 18. Ashe, Varus, Anivia. 40% of ADCs, including Vayne. Gnar lvl 18. 40% of ADCs aka Lucian, Sivir, Teemo stuff like that. Urgot. gnar level 1.

Vayne's range is 550 by the way (which is the average for most ADCs). Her condemn also has a range that is greater than her AA range, so that statement is false as well.

Actually, you're wrong here. Condemn has a range of (drumroll please) 550, EXACTLY as large as her AA range. So yes, she's still limited by that.

Now onto my opinion. I personally feel that Vayne's "weak" early game is completely negated by the fact that she has all the safety.

If you honestly think Vayne is safe, you need to play more Caitlyn. Vayne is still the only ADC with no means of retaliating from poke. And she doesn't have the mana or cd to keep tumbling in lane. You don't have to all in her. You just have to wear her down.

Narasimha5 votes

That's... wait, do you seriously not know this point? Thats the difference between how spells and AA ranges are calculated. AAs are calculated from edge-to-edge. Spells are calculated from center-to-center. Seriously, thats one of the most basic things to know about ranges. They both have a range of 550. She's still not able to hit anything outside of that range.

ArkenStorm1 votes

they both have a range of 550, unless you don't count lolwiki as a reliable source. Narasimha is right

Delioth1 votes

Yeah, they both have a 550 range.

Except auto range and skill range are completely different things- one calculates from the center of the model, one calculates from the edge.

Last time I looked, they were typically ~40 units off from each other.

One of their many smash hits. My personal favorite is designing an ADC that's supposed to be the "teamwork ADC" then have her designer come out and say she's entirely self sufficient. Kalista

Vayne's main issues result from her having proportionally better offensive base stats than most other ADCs, and Silver Bolts being more efficient against squishies due to its flat damage component.

Her base AD scaling is 3.25, which is only bested by Draven's 3.5, and that is despite her having the highest AD steroid of all ADCs. Her AS/lvl is 4%, equaled only by Caitlyn, who has worse base AS.

Remove Silver Bolt's flat damage component and the high AD growth (possibly swapping it with Lucian, imo), and reevaluate those changes. Think it would put her in a better place.

ArkenStorm1 votes

I beg to differ on the "highest AD steroid of all ADC's"

Exhibit A: Draven q. Exhibit B: Draven , because he didn't want to be left out

ProfDrDeath1 votes

Draven's Q is not an AD steroid.

Rather, it essentially adds up to 85% of his total AD as a physical on-hit effect to his auto-attacks with Spinning Axes. Said damage is plain bonus damage and doesn't get further modified, for example by crits (that doesn't mean that the underlying attack cannot crit, though).

AD steroids are abilities that change the amount of AD displayed to you in your character window on the lower left.

ArkenStorm1 votes

ok fair point. I always thought of AD steroids as abilities that increased AA damage, but i forgot about scaling.

Ritmann7 votes

I guess Vayne's popularity is also strongly influenced by the tank meta. She scales extremely well to the point, where she's supposed to kill tanks, and she generally is a lot better at duelling a tank by herself.

Also the AD buff her ult gives, along with the flat damage amount on her Silver Bolts (W), is ridiculously strong and effective against other ADCs. She just hits her powerspike way too early, considered how safe she can play, and how easily that Tumble (Q) allows her to farm under turret.

I personally am tired of facing Vayne all the time, and she's very difficult to assassinate because of her invisibility and extreme damage, not to mention her disengage.

Stop stop stop. her range is 550.

True Damage shouldn't be a thing. Yes you can have huge armor pen with J4's Wukongs and Talons, but that is with itemization. True percentage damage AND true base damage is a little bit 2 cheese.

I hated her before her artwork got updated and hate her now.Only hated her a lot less with the cait meta but at least caitlyn fell off.

she needs to lose the % portion of her true damage.

"but muh tank buster". while we need champions in this game who are able to kill tanks, we dont need champions that completely shit on them. they overtuned the lategame of ranged carries in general. tanks shouldnt be invincible, but they also shouldnt blow up to them like they do right now.

or we can go back to buffing assassins, because theyre supposed to take a crap on adc and thats just their job.

Because tanks should be unkillable dps gods running around face tanking turrets while 4 shotting everyone else who isn't a tank with pure impunity.

Stop picking nothing but tanks, or coordinate your CC on Vayne. It's not hard and she is squishy as hell.

can you even read? i said we need champions that are able to kill them, not champions that blow them up as if their defense is meaningless. right now, thats what happens lategame. they dump all their gold into being able to survive 2 or 3 shots more from an ad carry than a squishy. its stupid as fuck.

no tank can 1v1 an adc past midgame anyways. might at least allow them to be more beefy than theyre now.

giving a ranged adc % health true damage has nothing to do with balance anymore. its overkill. you dont give an assassin a ranged 5 second point and click stun, because hes supposed to be able to kill adc. there is a limit to everything and vaynes design went past that limit. they also need to take bork down a notch.

i say turn the % damage into magical, and then give her 50 increased attack range on her ult. makes her still a strong duellist without that % health true damge bullshit on her w.

always when shes strong, shes way too strong. happened multiple times in the past. usually just ends up in nerfs and her not seing play again, until some weird gimmick pops up that synergizes far too well with her w and causes her power spike to happen too early.

shes extremely binary, which speaks for bad design.

When a champion as frequently played and hated as Vayne comes along, there is almost always more than one reason they are played/hated. Her entire design revolves around "I'm going to negate as much counterplay as possible."

My point is, look at other end game scalers. Trist is weak early AND mid game, giving ample opportunity to put her behind. Twitch's early game is one of the worst in LoL, and he's always a pretty poor duelist unless wickedly ahead. Kog'maw is immobile, heavily team dependent as a result and as dodgable skillshots.

Vayne is all point/click, is safe but weak early game, scales well mid game, destroys end game, is one of the best duelists in League period, isn't as team dependent as most ADCs due to her re-position and self-peel, fights counterbuilding with % max health true damage, can combat dive assassins better than most ADCs,...I mean, Jesus.

YES SHE IS ENTIRELY BEATABLE, I'm not minimizing her weaknesses, but I'm saying that in a solo queue environment, that's just overbearing. She may be balanced by LCS standards but this is just obnoxious in non-organized play.

What nonsense. She is one of the squishiest champions in the game, and has no poke or wave clear what so ever.

Compared to tanky (for a ranged) Urgot with a poke? Really? Or Teemo with his speedboost and blind?

You expect Vayne to tumble in for 2 autos and get dumped on? There are very few ADCs she out trades in lane in a standing fight, and a lot of them are ones that are not played anymore.

For Carthage2 votes

Well no. I expect her to tumble in and outduel literally everyone all the time because it's what she's been doing for the past few weeks which is why 30% of the entire population of the game plays her every day.

I honestly feel that vaynes true damage is a little high. I mean Every third attack its 8% of max health, Seriously? 8%? Come on. Even kogmaw has magic damage on his w and it has to be activated, it actually has a cooldown, 17 seconds to be exact if no cdr. He legit has a rough early game. He has no escapes, He relies on using his w and having ult to do alot of his damage. I think if they toned down her true damage she could be i guess in a healthier spot? or maybe get rid of the bonus damage from her ult. how i REALLy feel about it is, her w should be physical or magic damage. Not true. True is just guaranteed a safe late game.

I GANK LANES2 votes

although i agree with you that vayne nowadays doesn't have any really difficult match ups due to the nerfs to lane bully adc's, people need to start thinking about their overall comp vs the enemy comp. Have an enemy Vayne? Play around it, grab a vi. Now I'm sure people are gonna say, oh you have to play her game, doesn't it suck to have to play a certain way just because someone picks a champ? League is a strategy game that's how it should be played. Enemy team has a poke comp? Grab a hard engage like a malph/yas, the limits are endless.

Will finish later just got in game, and P.S. I've played Vayne like 4 times

You hit the correct point fairly early in your post: You can tell if a champion needs some sort of fix if, once picked, the enemy team feels they have to play the entire game around countering that champion.

The rest of your post is arguably unnecessary.

Also of note: Vayne is not the only champion that does this.

I think that's actually the exact opposite of the situation. Every champ should make you consider your team needs, that's actually good design. Yes, you play the vayne game, which is don't duel her. Same if the other team picks another good dueler like udyr, trynd, khazix, zed or even quinn. You don't duel them. Likewise if the other team picks a tf or rengar, you play their game. You stay clumped to avoid getting picked off. Lots of champs change the way you play and that's a GOOD thing as it adds variety.

I think some people just don't want to play to counter her. She has weaknesses (no wave clear, no real presence beyond her aa range, poor sieging, etc) that you should be trying to exploit instead of insisting on winning duels versus her.

Mew Goes AD3 votes

This isn't just about her dueling. When Vayne is picked, the need to make sure everything on your team counters her, and only her, specifically and perfectly is above and beyond just "don't duel Udyr" or "watch out for TF gank."

That is what I'm saying. The game absolutely revolves around Vayne for the enemy team every time she is picked.

If I remember correctly Vayne was relased about same week as Diablo 3.

I was surprised noone in old forums made connection Vayne - D3 crossbow hero.

On the other note, Vayne being healthy depends heavily on META. When we had assassin meta, Vayne wasn't even in top 50 champions to ask for nerfs. But now, when her passive works beyond good against tanks, she finally got spotted on "nerf that shit" radar.

Personally i don't care. Only once did i had good game as vayne (in ARAM), rest was being useless. Does she need nerfs? Dunno, really. One thing i know: Once META shifts to something else, Vayne won't be as annoying as she is now. But if Riot will nerf her and then META changes, then i'm pretty sure we'll start seeing "buff vayne" threads in awesome numbers.

Onegarion1 votes

What you are describing is how players learn to counter things. At the beginning of the "tank" meta, as its come to be known, vayne was still considered bad. I'm surprised it took people this long to even realize and start using her on the grand scale. Now that more people have taken to her in a meta that she excels in it seems like she is extremely strong, but she hasn't changed.

Times like this would be nice if people would start finding meta killers to fight around this. The same way people picked up vayne can kill her if an assassin style meta comes back where she isn't as big of a problem. This is just a cycle of adapting that the game needs to go through and many people don't want to do it or try new things.

Saianna2 votes

Yea, but asking, begging, screaming for Vayne nerfs just because Riot decided to push "new" meta is just simply ridiculous.

Vayne is not nor never was my main. My mains are long past nerfed/reworked into some meh things. I don't wanna see every champion getting wrecked just cause some group of players prefer begging for nerfs than learning how to deal with them (Riven excluded. Nerf that b*tch).

It's all about shifting focus from lets say.. Zed to Vayne.

Be honest with youself: Any good player can beat another champion. If good Soraka has beaten Zed then everyone would be like "wow amazing skills, GG". When Vayne beats Zed with same amount of skills it's more like "meh, nerf her already".
