Is it worth actually trying to make Malzahar's Voidlings relevant?

I'm sure people realize that the reason Malzahar's Voidlings were moved to an active ability is because they were perceived to be a core part of its kit that needed to be highlighted. The requests for AD and jungle Malzahar to still be viable play styles being the main reason for this.

This, of course, has caused nothing but problems for Malzahar. Who has now been nerfed god knows how many times due to the ability that makes the off-brand play styles possible, or at least did in the past.

From what I remember playing of old Malzahar ages ago on another account, his passive felt very underwhelming in lane. Only occurring every 4 spell-casts, on a champion with fairly high cooldowns and mana costs, plus an ability that rewards you with NOT having to recast it if you're using it well.

I guess the point I'm making is, even if he were to have his kit reverted, is his passive actually worth keeping it around? It's an occasional "meh, okay" bonus for AP Malz, seeing as they didn't even scale with his AP at all, while making AD Malz complete AIDS (snerk) in URF (hi, I'm going to knock down all your turrets with my swarm of 100% Bonus AD scaling minions, kthx).

I feel like a variation of his current passive that's re-designed to favor Malzahar being in combat, and without the CC immunity, would be a neat idea. Particularly using the flavor of his being a prophet.

Passive: Portent of Futility

While in combat with enemy champions or monsters, Malzahar will gradually see into his targets' futures.

When he has fully seen a target's future, he takes greatly reduced damage from them. This effect lingers for a brief period once the target damages Malzahar, after which he will again begin to see into the target's future.

Damaging his targets with his abilities will hasten Malzahar's vision into the future.

Like a more powerful but delayed Phantom Dancer passive that he can apply to multiple targets, and making it trigger more often if he's using his abilities.

Another thing is that I think Malefic Visions should reset its cooldown on kill rather than automatically jumping to a new target, just to alleviate his "AFK farming" issue.

Just my thoughts.

Everything is "complete AIDS" in urf though.

But i agree, they do need a nit of help, right now it just feels like the endless train of annoying old-yorick ghoul spam. item 3070 item 3070 item 3042

Most of the annoying things in URF are only annoying in the context of fighting champions.

Old AD Malzahar was one of the few things that was actually stupidly proficient at winning the game by itself.

Malzahar's Voidlings are key aspect of his core.

It would be easy to fix them so they work in Jg and Mid, as well as keep them under control for support:

W: Cast 1, drops 1 voidling with hitpoints. Voidling frenzy on Visions or Nether Grasp. Only Multiplies for Jg camps, Dragon, Baron. Cast 2: drop Void Pool.

By limiting the Multiply to just Jg camps, Drag and Baron, the support lane is less of a problem.

However, Malzahar's scaling is still very poor. He will need the void pool in his W to compensate for the loss of his voidling in lane.

Additionally, Nether Grasp should be fixed so that if it interrupted by CC or by QSS, the Suppress converts to a slow.

Malzahar's Voidlings are key aspect of his core.

They're a key aspect to his off-builds, you mean. Traditional AP mid Malzahar cares far less about them, instead favoring Malefic Visions and his suppression as his key skills.

They tried to make the Voidlings a key part of him with the rework and we see how that went.

I personally don't think trying to accommodate AD Malz into his balance is even worth it. It makes it harder to concentrate on his mage qualities, and AD Malz was only ever 'good' as a jungler or as probably the single strongest lane pusher in URF (or one of, I think reworked Tristana might push lane quicker than old Malz now).

My brainstormed passive at least keeps jungle Malz in mind, but trying to make a champion who's ostensibly an AP mage able to scale viably with a full AD build is just... tricky.

I've said it before but I'll lay it out again. This was Riot's "how to rework Malz" thought process:

  1. lets make him more of a summoner, yeah that can be his niche or something

1 week after rework

  1. but we don't like summoners lol

The end

Hey, they at least tried to make his other skills a bit more interactive by making Malefic Visions get extra duration from his other abilities.

This of course resulted in his Q and E both being made weaker without each other, though.

They didnt try to make it "more interactive". It was a straight up nerf disguised as that.

I'm leaving a comment to come back tomorrow, but AD malz in urf shouldn't even be on the radar of concerns when it comes to reverting him. He might be AIDS, but there are at least 10 other STDs in the game mode.

Admittedly that was mostly so I could make the joke.

Honestly, though, if AD Malzahar is good enough to be a viable build, then he's just a better Yorick at that point.

Also, Malz's kit isn't even designed to be good for summoning. Unlike the other summoners whose kits are built around and interact with their summons, Malz's Voidlings were just situational bonus damage (that scaled off the opposite stat from his abilities AND did the opposite kind of damage) he got every few spellcasts.

We already have enough summoners, and they tend to be hell to balance, so it'd be better for Malzahar's game health to just scrap the Voidlings entirely and focus on what the rest of his kit brings.

I don't understand people's obsession with making champion have access to literally all of their scaling in the same build.

Mono stat designs are seriously the cancer of the game in terms of champion designs.

It's much easier to control a champion's power if you give them wiggle room to have abilities gain, lose scaling with a particular build, as well as base values.

I'd much rather see every champion have 1 ability which scales with the opposite stat that all of their other abilities scale with, than champions which see scaling on all of their abilities from buying a single stat.

Just like with Zyra, the issue isn't that the minions exist and do things. The issue is that their base damages are way too high and they scalings are way too low.

Old passive was actually very useful for pushing towers and harassing early game.

Plus they actually could tank.

imo I'd want them to stay around as a passive, even if most people don't appreciate them brave soldiers.
