Deathcap is the issue with AP itemization, I think.

Deathcap tries to fill the same hole as Infinity Edge, for a role where the hole isn't the same shape.

They want higher AP for their scalings, but since all the items have been watered down, the high AP is now locked behind one big stat stick. This is fine for ADCs, whose primary means of damage is a function they all possess intrinsically.

Mages, however, have a variety of abilities, play styles, and they have a variety of items with good effects and passives/actives. They shouldn't have to have the brunt of their late-game power locked into one item.

So I figured, why not delete or rework Deathcap, remove its passive entirely, and instead make it an inherent part of completed AP items? As an example, Hextech GLP-800 would have +80 (+X%) Ability Power, with the +X% part stacking additively across items that have it.

Items that grant more early-game power wouldn't give a %AP bonus in this proposed system. Things like Morello, Luden's, and Gunblade. They trade late-game power for early-game power, like how lethality and crit work on ADCs.

Might need more numerical fine-tuning, but the concept is there.

Actually a lot of the time item 3135 can end up being better then item 3089 because it is so much cheaper and the magic pen also affects your base damage (Though of course the lower the base damage and the higher the AP ratios makes item 3089 and item 3135 worse by comparison)

I can't help but feel that Deathcap is for mages that look for raw numbers. I wanna say that there are plenty of mages that prefer not-deathcap in their build but some that prefer Deathcap. I here yah on the I-Edge comparison but I think it's more like how there are various champions that dish out AD dmg, but not all of them build I Edge.

Get rid of death cap bring back death fire grasp.

There has to be an AP item with Death in the title

Not a bad idea but why remove death cap? It basically the AP go to for more pure AP dmg.

There was a time when there were three ítems that gave 120 AP, and Deathcap wasn't a problem there. Why should it be a problem now?

Every time Riot changes something, the AP ítems are worse and the AD ítems are better.

Mages were bad even when Zhonya's and Deathcap were the same item. Riot just hates mages.

Deathcap and RoA generally have given no real bonus effects. Catalyst's change was pretty nice longer run, but now RoA is just underwhelming with GLP existing.

This means they are basic stat sticks, while other champs buy items that composite effects, these effects only increase basic efficiency. Shields and abilities not innate are ideal. Liandry's DoT %burn is pretty nice, but has very poor output relying many times on Rylai's which was nerfed. Then you consider Luden's is a high-AP with the added effect of splash dps and you add a better version of Deathcap.

IIRC Riot stated at some point that they had plans to buff Deathcap in some way, maybe by lowering the price or changing the recipe somehow. It's all I remember what they said tho.

Deathcap just feels bad to build up to. Its components take 3 inventory slots, and even then, the combine cost is more expensive than any single component. Making the gold breakpoints you need for the item is hard, and sitting on too much gold compared to your opponent can lose fights really easily.

I think Deathcap is relatively okay, all things considered. I Also think AP itemization is pretty healthy.

If there was an item i'd want looked at, it'd probably be item 3135 .

If nothing else, this thread is an interesting look into how the Gameplay board works.

Considering a bunch of my comments that are reiterating points in the OP are downvoted, but the thread itself is at +13.

I like deathcap better than IE precisely because alternatives have different/better utilities than for AD champions, so when/if to build deathcap is a choice, unlike for ADC champions crit builds (most of them), there ie is a "must buy". Want to do a lot of damage? Deathcap! Want some utility instead? Other items. Choice is good, not bad.
