They really need to give a third free runepage now that new champion select + autofill is the norm.

The Lost Marbles··82 votes·2,635 views

With autofill rearing its ugly head, now you need to be ready to be dropped into any position at a moment's notice, and we still only get two free rune pages to work with.

Yeah, sure, the standard AD page and AP page approach works in most cases, but what about jungling? Junglers seem to generally want attack speed runes (usually reds), with only a couple exceptions, and a page tailored for the jungle isn't of much use anywhere else for the majority of champions.

This wasn't really a problem before autofill, but now...

We had to deal with 2 rune pages for every role long before new champ select, back when autofill was de facto instead of systematic. Why does more free rune pages suddenly make more sense now?

Not that runes aren't stupidly expensive. Because they are.

Spaceman5pff9 votes

SPEAKING OF WHICH:

Autofill used to be active EVERY game, and things were fine and the game grew. Now we have an autofill "system" and everybody is crying and people claim the game is dying.

Back then though, because the game wouldn't label you as role x, people would agree to swap roles, but now that the game actually labels you with role x, NO ONE WANTS TO SWAP

drbob20121 votes

I would argue that I've seen more people willing to swap now that they've got a higher likelihood of getting their primary in most games. I know my evidence here is anecdotal, but so it yours, so I think we cancel out.

Spaceman5pff1 votes

I haven't even noticed a change, tbh.

A friend of mine keeps telling me to learn jungle, which is why I bring this up.

If I make a rune page for jungling, I have to give up either my AD or AP page. I don't have 6300 IP to buy another rune page with, and there are still runes I don't have to optimize the pages I've got now anyway.

Thanks to autofill and having to pick two roles, though, I'm not guaranteed to get jungle, which means I'd be forced to use whatever other page I kept. If I keep the AD page, it doesn't benefit me too much for supporting and I don't own any ADs that make good mid-laners. If I keep the AP page, I'm screwed if I get assigned ADC or top lane, since I don't have any picks for those lanes that'd make use of an AP page.

Rhai1 votes

Why not just go for a standard Attack damage/Attack speed page for your AD needs then?

EndlessSorcerer3 votes

This is a useful rune page for all AD autoattackers and junglers. Use this for autoattack-oriented fighters, marksmen and junglers until you have more flexibility.

  • Attack Speed Quints
  • Attack Damage Marks
  • Flat Armor Seals
  • Flat MR Glyphs

This ^

The only people bitching about rune pages are the people who don't understand multiple-use pages. Just means they fucking suck and don't understand why they want what stats. They just netbuild everything.

50000000000000002 votes

The generalist rune pages are good for general uses, but it's not optimal on most champions.

Spaceman5pff1 votes

Actually, they work well as GENERAList pages because they are perfectly adequate on most champions.

50000000000000001 votes

I know, that's why it's a generalist page. It's cheap and it works ok on a lot of champions, but it's not gonna be the optimal setup for most champions. That's why people complain about the cost of runes and rune pages. Adequate is not as good as optimal.

Spaceman5pff1 votes

Right.

I would be pissed if I couldn't afford the runes needed to at least be useful to my team.

However, I can, and I was able to.

This game is free to play, it is entirely fair to require people to grind for extra rune pages if they do not want to pay for them.

Bottom line: League is one of the fairest, and one of the more generous F2P models. I think most of the people crying about rune prices haven't really experienced performance inhibiting f2p models like Hearthstone (being arguably the most famous example)

Runescape was another one: If you didn't pay for a member ship, you simply were not allowed to be as good.

there is absolutely no intended financial barrier to performance (excepting bugs to skins / poor visuals on certain skins like imperial lux / underworld tf) and that is far better than most other f2p games.

Mig891 votes

I dont understand. Auto-fill has always been a thing. They just put a name on it now and people freak out?

Spaceman5pff1 votes

There once was a time, when role was determined by pick order. First pick got first role choice etc.

Last pick meant you got whatever was scrap left over, unless someone was kind enough to switch.

Now riot makes a system out of it, and everyone gets all upset.

Mig891 votes

See, as a support main, none of this has ever mattered. If i want to play an off role I get it because im autofill protected almost all of the time. Ill go play support for a few games then maybe go mid/bot. I only feel like im gold when playing support and since im not back theyre yet, Im comfortable playing any lane. Autofill has helped supports with their role selection and watching everyone else fight about a system thats been around forever is comical.

Spaceman5pff1 votes

Yeah I personally have no problem playing support, so autofill has never been an issue for me, unless I get ADC. That is the only role I don't play well / feel comfortable on.

I think that they should just give everyone 20 free rune pages and free runes. (And give everyone the full 30 slots from level 1; same for masteries.)

When runes first came out, they were something for players to aspire to, to give you something to spend your IP on, and to encourage players to spend RP on champions in order to save IP for runes.

League's economy has changed. Riot make their money mostly from skins now, and new champions. The prices of new champions have gone up a lot from the days when we had 1350 IP champions released, which further encourages players to buy them with RP.

There's no longer any reason for runes and rune pages to be so expensive. IP as a currency has been greatly devalued because all new content costs so much, making it prohibitively expensive for new players.

I think the potential money that they would lose (from people having a little more IP to spend on champions that they might otherwise buy with RP) would be offset by making League much less difficult for new players to get into.

Wolftastic333 votes

What's wrong with an AD page and an AP page? It's good enough.

The Lost Marbles2 votes

I'm just saying an extra rune page to start with would be nice, I don't know why some of you are sounding so needlessly confrontational over it.

Well midlane you want a page with health seals and magic resist glyphs, and a page with armour seals, cdr or scaling ap glyphs for vs a ad midlaner, atleast so not really.

There are a little one too many different style of mage and overall potential champion picks that says otherwise. Typically those other picks, such as assassins, some adc's (for some reason), or otherwise, have to have more than one unique page to compliment the alternative lane role that they either desire to fill, or have to fill. It's unhealthy to standardize your roles with all-around pages if you don't need to. If I weren't always so short on ip, my current pages wouldn't be as half-hazard as they are now.

Valderis Vandala1 votes

By that logic they better give 5 starting rune pages, 1 for every role.

Praetor Notorias1 votes

3 isn't enough. You need 5, one for each role. I have 20 pages and when it comes down to it, they are just iterations of about 5 or 6 styles of page. But 2 is definitely not enough.

Spaceman5pff1 votes

No.

You need 2 pages to be fine anywhere. One with AD. One with AP.

If you want you can put attack speed quint on your AD page, if you don't play AD Casters.

I went a season and a half with just 2 pages. People who say you need attack speed on your AP tank page for the jungle aren't inherently wrong, but you only come out of the jungle with a shred more HP, not enough to twist your panties up over.

If you stop netbuilding everything, and START learning WHY you want what stats, you will figure shit out. Untill then, you can waste your time crying.

You don't need them, by the time you do need them you probably got IP to spare.

IP gain should go up or runes (and pages) should be cheaper. especially pages need to be cheaper. smh 6.4k.

I personally have 7 pages of which i use 5. I have standard AD and AP pages which work for anything honestly. Other than that i have an adc page because i main jinx, A Mpen page for singed and a Hybrid pen Attack speed page for Kayle/Teemo These are all kinda niche pages i will mostly use on these specific champs or those i find fitting for it. I'd say i still use AD/AP on about 50% of champs.

Ip isn't that hard to get as soon as stop buying champs. Ofcourse i occasionally still buy some when i feel like it.

Mira Arya Enthe1 votes

If I didn't have multiple pages I could get by sharing ADC and jungler trees.

Shyvana does fine with AD marks, as quints, armor seals and MR glyphs. Ashe so does Ashe.

Lexyy1 votes

It's not like they are 100 000ip..... Just postpone one 6300ip champion for a little while if you think runes are that important.

I had 2 runepages for one year and a half, and I only recenzly bought 2 when they were 2 for 1.... and now i only use 3 out of 4 (one is completely blank).

Dolasaur2 votes

That's an okay response for the hardcore players. But it's very dismissive for newer players. When you're starting out and only own 16 champions total, it can feel truly terrible to know you should delay your next champion buy (or 5-10 champion buys if you're buying up all the 450s/1350s) in favor of buying a new rune page. Heck, if it's enabled in normals (I don't know whether it is), you might not even own that many champs yet. I think I owned about 5 champs when I hit level 30, due to wanting 6300s and buying up runes.

EndlessSorcerer1 votes

When I first started playing the game (around pre-season 3), I managed to save enough IP between levels 17 and 20 to fill my two basic rune pages. This was long before they were placed on a permanent 50% sale.

If you take proper advantage of the sales, purchasing rune and rune pages isn't particularly hard.

Spaceman5pff1 votes

to be fair, the EXP needed to get 30 is half of what it used to be. Stupid, if you ask me, but true.

It lowers competitive integrity at the bottom end of the ranked ladder by a serious amount. Now if you wanna climb from bronze / silver you have to deal with the usual issues PLUS people who actually don't know large chunks of the game on a functional level.

Dolasaur1 votes

It's not really that it's hard, per se. It's more that I get the feeling that "my runes are meh" instead of "my runes are awesome, so I'm glad they're a part of the game". I own a fair amount of runes at this point, but the limitation on pages still comes up. There's countless times where I think "The only magic damage on the enemy team is Janna. I really wish I could swap out my MR blues for scaling CDR" and the like.

I totally get what you're saying.

But I feel like runes are a little too complicated for a new player! And therefor shouldnt be their first priority. And I also think they should be practicing on normal as long as possible. I started playing ranked after I got 16 champions, and two rune pages filled up. It didn't take me too long.

Plus, cheaper champs are easier and more suited for new players. 6300 may be too hard for them if they are still learning the game.

Or... you could just spend the IP or RP on a rune page. Not really a big deal.

ITT: new players are spoiled and think having to play roles outside your main is a recent development (but yes runes pages should be free, just not for the reasons you stated)

Hexs Fortune1 votes

Pretty sure nobody is being autofilled as jungler. That role is in high demand by players

MFTORANK11 votes

This system is so dumb, when you start you have barely enough for a full rune page, then as you progress you have too much IP and have nothing to spend it on. I have like 20k IP sitting in my account. Would be nice if we could buy old skins with IP like 10-15K IP for a 365RP skin would be fair I think.

ThwartinMaPlans1 votes

This games still very brutal to new players. You basicall need an exp. friend to babysit you for quite a while. The costs early for basic necessities is just bullshit. I cant even gift a buddy some pages and ip to help him get going.

Keylight XD1 votes

or you can just buy a new runepage.

Danjeng1 votes

I saved up for Rune pages and Runes, so I have a pretty small champion pool (most of them 450 ip and 1350 ip ones). I wouldn't mind if newer players got a free Rune page, considering how hard it was for me to grind when I was just starting out. Runes themselves are already so expensive.

I remember how i thought this was total bullshit that some higher level player literally got better free stats -- on top of being more experienced than me. Now really! You would think built-in advantages would not exist in such a competitive game.

(Tip for new players: Save up for the 2 for 1 rune page sales. Having four rune pages is enough to fulfill what you need for many of the champions in various roles.)
