Whats so bad about playing out of meta?

I enjoy playing out of meta supports like sol, aniv, vel(not as much out of meta as first 2), yet when i do, people get mad and i dont understand it. People all think koreans are so good...well the main reason of that is cause their community doesn't limit themself. All the new builds come from them. Rengar tank for example started with Koreans, yet for some reason NA wants to believe something HAS to be played in a set role with a set build. Some of the best things that are now considered "meta" were once out of meta before high elo Korean player did it.

People are afraid at times when it comes to something unfamiliar.

In a normal game, it doesn't matter so much. Play have fun and learn new things.

In a ranked game, it matters, because people are playing to climb. Playing a non meta sup hurts your team because they are not as aware of your champs assets and limitations. This means they won't play aw well as they're always guessing how you are going to react to something.

You may feel great w/ Sol support, but what does he bring to lane for your ADC?

  1. he has some CC (Q/R)
  2. He can zone the enemy w/ his stars. What does he do that hurts your ADC
  3. Steals CS, it's going to happen. Your ADC will be as distracted trying to out farm you as they are the enemy.
  4. Unable to ambush, his orbs are always visible. You always know where Sol is, and you can be played around instead of into.
  5. Engage/Disengage is unreliable.
  6. No heals, shields, or other buffs for your lane mate. Even a good Sol will be an unreliable lane mate as a support. That's why it matters.

you forgot to mention the part about his insane roaming to mid ability. Cast Q then E to mid. Later on during teamfights that E/Q ability is basically a 5 man stun if your team follows up with it. Yes enemy team can run when they see it, but if your team engages before hand itll be a lot harder for them to run away

Roaming is something that is lower on the to-do list for supports than what was mentioned, and shouldn't be the first though in selecting a support champ.

Take Nami for example she's probably the most underrated support we have.

  1. Has initiation and disengage in two spells w/ relatively low CDs
  2. Has a heal/poke that is very strong.
  3. can zone enemies easily.
  4. All her spells buff teammates w/ a speed boost.
  5. She can buff attack damage
  6. she can buff herself to roam well too. Everything she does helps the team. Her build is very affordable for a support's income. item 3060 item 3504 item 2301 item 3222 item 3111 item 2043

Meta is meta for a reason. Some off-meta picks work fine, others not so much.

Support is a unique role in that you aren't going to get farm and probably aren't going to get kills. Some champs simply don't function under those circumstances, and playing them as support is going to justifiably upset your teammates.
