Frustration in climing the ranks as a support
I've recently began climbing the ranks and while doing so, I found what I did well and what I did poorly. I found that I'm not that great at top lane, although I can do it in a pinch, better at mid than top but still not that great since ziggs was nerfed. I'm ok in the jungle, and I'm kinda bad at ADC. One thing I have learned that I'm actually pretty good at - at least better than the other roles by leaps and bounds- is support. The frustration that comes with this though is even though I know what's going on, I know who to target, and even though I can ping and shout and ward and stun...it doesn't matter if your team doesn't listen. As a role that is completely team reliant, it's so frustrating to get a team that literally flat out tells you that they aren't going to listen to you because you: a.) Ping too much b.) talk too much c.) - Personal favorite - missed a single skill shot (could even be the first one you've missed all game)
Another thing that I've found is something even more frustrating. Many times I've found that teams are willing to just help you as long as you take on the role of leader and make wise choices but, there are times when none of that matters. It doesn't matter if your team is listening to you 100%, you all focus the right objectives and still get slapped down. Not because of lack of team work, but because of skill of the player.
I've noticed that if you begin to do well, and have many successful matches, the people you face become more difficult skill wise. You would think that this would correlate with your own team, but it doesn't. For example, out of my most recent matches, 5 matches. I was on a winning streak for 3 of them. The final 2, our team was simply out classed. Not to say that each lane didn't do it's job, but because the enemy team was just flat out better on an individual level. After each match, I look back at the details of who I played with vs who I played against. I began noticing that as I was on an upward trend, so too was the enemy. And while I was doing well as a support (warding, making catches, roaming, killing other wards), my team was doing really bad.
Another example: My last match I played as support morgana. End of game statistics showed that I placed 34 wards over the course of the game my self (the enemy team placed 50 in total), I dealt more damage than the enemy ADC and top lane, I also had more gold than the enemy support, but less kills. I zoned the enemy ADC and support well so that my adc could free farm and he ended up being 60 CS ahead and 2 kills. After all that however, we had no chance. Top lane lost by 4 kills, 2 tower and 50% less CS, mid lane lost by 2 kills, 1 tower, and 40 CS, and jungler lost by missing all of his smites (our only dragon got stolen by jinx rocket) and not realizing when he was being counter jungled and when to contest vs how to counter jungle and pressure objectives. Our ADC, while being decent in lane, didn't know how to close out games, position him self, and work towards objectives, so he would get killed as fights started, our mid and top were negligible and our jungler didn't know what his role was as a tank jarvin even though he correctly purchased his items in correlation to the enemy team.
Following the match, as I do in every match, I checked on my team and the enemy team. I noticed that with my team, they had all been in gold 3 and gold 2, they also had all lost 3 of their last 4 matches and all had a history of doing poorly on KDA as well as CS. Not exactly high hopes, but not always defining factors of them playing poorly. I checked their expanded match history and also found that, just as it happened in my game, the person playing mid always played poorly, the top laner always played poorly, the jungler always built well, but never got objectives like dragon, and the adc always did great during laning, and fell apart following. I checked the enemy, and found that out of their last 4 matches, they had all won 3 or 4, the expanded samples showed that while they all did perform well in lane, they all also gathered objectives well. Dragons off respawn, baron after inhibitors, focusing towers over kills and CSing over kills. On top of that, not that it's much defining factors, but their team was all ranked plat 5 and gold 1.
Some of you might be saying "yeah, and?" but this is where my frustration lies. I'm a support, and I'm doing my job well, not perfect, but good enough to at least advance to the next level. I've had multiple stints where I go on 6 and 8 win winning streaks, but yet every time I go to advance in my series, I get screwed hard on team members and regardless of how well I do, since I don't play a carry, I can't carry myself out of this league without a duo partner. It wouldn't be a big deal if it only happened once or twice, but I've been to the series promotion for G 2 and G1 (I had a string of bad games that knocked me back down to G3) around 6 times each. Eventually I get there, and as I progress, it's easier as I don't have to spoon feed people what objective to go to next, they all know as well, but it's still frustrating.
Am I the only one who has had these situations? Are there any support mains out there also that could give me hope/advice on rising in the ranks?
Thanks
or
support that can farm well on their own and blow up the enemy team in fights. That way you can make up for incompetent team mates playing carries, when they can't carry.
