Can someone help me understand the way matchmaking matched my last game

I'm not talking about rank inequality, I'm talking about roles

I got autofilled Jungle, I queued up for Mid/ADC

My ADC got Autofilled to ADC, but he queued up for Support/jungle

what? why couldn't you of just given him jungle, and given me adc?

silly rito, autofill is a failure

unfortunately, Sir. awdaf, this is boards. This means that the odds of someone helping you understand something are much smaller than the odds of them simply responding with some sort of unhelpful insult or bash or Riot.

As for why, i've no idea. The autofill system is likely rather convoluted and confusing, but I don't know if anyone outside of riot actually knows the specifics of how it works. Best thing you can hope for is to be placed in a role that you have some knowledge of (or play with a large group of friends and be more likely to get your role/trade for your role).

The system decided to autofill you and the other guy at some point during the queue to speed things up, along with the other things the matchmaker does to speed it up like widening the skill ranges and ping differences. The autofill choice was made before you got into champ select, at which point the system is just happy to have found a match and isn't looking for the edge case where it might be able to revert you from autofill back into your primary choices on the rare occasion that someone else was also autofilled into your picks.

It's an improvement than could be made to the matchmaker but it's not unintuitive that it would work this way currently.

An actually enlightening revelation. Thank you for this.

Duh, auto filling you is better than giving you your secondary role.

This is probably caused by the way Rito reduced the rate people who queue support secondary would get support like 99% of the time. People complained about that so they adjusted the formula to make it not always give you support if you were queued support secondary, which has likely caused some hijinks in role assignment algorithm

They could still optimize it without giving the support his role 99% of the time

I just bought Draven and my friend was going to support for me and we both play mid jg and top most of the time and I queued adc mid and he went supp mid or supp jg and we both got autofilled me top and him jg it was pretty funny

I think I might have just figured out how Autofill works. Were you in a premade?

If not, then I think this is what happened:

  1. either/both of you had a long queue time, likely increasing the chances of autofill.
  2. The system decided that, because whoever had a long quqeue time shouldn't wait that long, so it autofilled them/you
  3. someone else joined in with the role the system gave the first person selected as intended role; however, because it had already autofilled that first person into the second person's intended role, and their secondary intended role is already taken by some third person, then the system sees that the second person's roles are both taken already so it decides to autofill them into one of the intended roles of the first person.

None of this is comfirmed, of course, and makes a lot of assumptions, but it seems likely to me based off of your description and other times I've seen people get autofilled.

Either that or it just makes no sense whatsoever.

Because someone else probably qued up for the roles I believe. I imagine a bunch of people at that time were vying for those roles. Your freind was dealt a not so great hand.

You could just communicate and switch roles. Like, people used to do before this fancy que.
