Can we have a spot on the client dashboard to show our Ping before we get into a game?

I just had a game where one of my teammates had 800 ping without knowing it, we lost.

This game could have been avoided if he saw his Ping in client before he got into a game, so he would know to fix his internet before hand.

well sometimes out of game ping and in game ping would be different due to just being connected to the client has alot less data transfer happening compared to being in a game and havign all that amount of data being transferred.

Dynikus5 votes

I feel like you would still probably be able to tell ahead of time because it would be higher than whatever it normally is. If my client ping were normally 50 ms, and I saw it was up at 100 before queueing, I would know ahead of time that my ping in game would be horrible.

maybe so... but there are apps and websites that you can use to check your ping if your that worried about it and your connection is that inconstant i dont have an issue i normally play at 48ms on a wifi connection

Dynikus3 votes

I'm pretty much always at 76 ms, and very rarely does that change. However just yesterday I went into a game and was at around 350 ms for the first 10 minutes. If you have a consistent problem with high latency, then you need to fix something. I feel like this is more a suggestion for people that have rare latency issues. It's virtually never a problem for me so I don't bother to check it.

Yup, yesterday I had some really random connection problems and something to show my ping before hand would be great. The only way to check my ping the easy way is when I'm using Teamspeak, where you can see your ping in the lower right corner.

It's not just about internet connection; it's specifically about the ability to connect to Riot's servers. There are times when I've had massively shitty ping on LoL just minutes after superb connections on CoD or DCUO.

I used the windows R Command prompt and pinged RIot's servers to get ping tests. It says I should have 86 ms. Go into game, and get 300 lol.

Can't blame me for Rito shenanigans.

but out of game and in game ping can vary greatly...

latency issues ... and so on... its one thing to connect to something that isnt transfering data as fast as being in game ... but when you get in game and you have any kind of connection issue it will show it self so a ping check prior to game isnt a true tell anyways

ahferroin71 votes

Um, no, unless you have insanely bad internet, the difference is single digit milliseconds. Seriously. The reason is really very simple: For bandwidth usage to have a measurable impact on latency, you have to be using close to your full bandwidth at some point between the two systems. Unless you have better than a gigabit link to your ISP or there's a satellite link somewhere between you and Riot, the link from you to your ISP is the slowest link between you and the servers. So, if you're not close to fully saturating your link to your ISP, you should see near zero difference between in game and out of game ping. If you do see more than a few milliseconds of difference, then something is wrong somewhere between you and Riot.

Speedtest.com it takes less than 1 minute

they never listen to forum posts but yeah this would be useful and wouldn't impact anything at all.

The Launcher ping will never be terrible for anyone. There is literally no data worthy of mentioning transferred between you and Riot. Browsing Facebook transfers more data. If you have a shitty ping in the launcher, then it's because of your own internet connection. And that's pretty easy to detect, just go to Speedtest.net or any other site that check your connection.

Once the game starts, you're connected to a server that spins up the game for you. You don't know beforehand which server on Riot's network will host your game, and I'm 99.9999% sure Riot does neither. It's determined by an optimization algorithm that factors in a multitude of parameters.

So having a ping in the Launcher will do absolutely nothing for you.

Junkο2 votes

That's completely false, otherwise pinging in cmd would be completely useless, as the packet it sends and receives back would be too small to have any delay, but that is not the case.

Fegone1 votes

That has absolutely nothing to do with pinging in CMD. Not sure where you get your info from. Mad Magazine?

Junkο1 votes

How do you think games work? You input commands into the game, what you did gets sent to a packet to a server and the server sends you back what other players did. If you are experiencing shitty internet problems, then obviously this is all going to take longer since it will take longer for your internet to download the packet and upload the packet.

Pinging in CMD does the same thing, it sends 4 packets, and then gets the packet back if the connection is good.

Hell a lot of LoL exploits were made by letting scripts send packets that players would not normally be able to send (Sion instantly changing directions during ult, Ashe being able to cast her old Q on teamates which let them have abilities as AAs (Azir passive, TF red card, old Fiora ult, etc). Riot patched it up since then though.

Fegone1 votes

Oh boi... where do I even begin... If you think there is 1 giant server that hosts all the currently played games in LoL, and every single player who is playing is sending and receiving packets from the same IP address, then this is where you're already fundamentally wrong.

Every game is hosted on a Server. This server runs a magnitude of services. Those services communicate with each player connected to that game. They listen for the player input and send back the result and what other players do. As long as you are in the lobby, this server is not yet identified, as to where the game will take place. Then as soon as the loading screen starts, a new Game ID is created. This game ID uniquely identifies the current game you are in. This is how yo u can look up certain games online, or determine if a player is currently in a game (e.g. on LolSumo) - using that game ID. You pinging while in champion select means you are testing your connection to the server where champion select takes place. However, no game has started yet. And also no Game ID has been created yet. Hence, as long as you are in champ select, you cannot use the RiotAPI or an app like LoLSumo to check your opponents, because the game hasn't been created yet.

This has absolutely nothing to do with whether exploits work or not. If you're using exploits, all you need to do is use Wireshark or Cain&Abel, follow where you send your game packets to or where you get them from, and you can find out the IP of the server you're connected to. Then if you're witty and malicious, you modify the packets you are sending or you send fake packets to that server which every single player in your game is connected to, and let the server process your input.

while you are correct that pinging the launcher doesn't represent your connection to the in-game client, you CAN ping the server directly to get an idea of your in-game latency. See my other post.

Fegone1 votes

You can ping a server, yes. But you don't know which one you'll be playing on. Plus, I believe they are using Amazon AWS (or Azure, but I think it's Amazon AWS) and hence it's impossible to know on which physical location the game will be hosted.

800 ping

plz don't

On a serious note, I'd go as far as to say I'd like a button, next to the "Play"-button, that does both a preset number of ping-checks and a check for packet loss.

Ping doesn't always tell the whole story, and I have an example of this here (11.6 MB .mkv video clip): https://1drv.ms/u/s!AuFMZD__7mN2gVKJfYTxOAn5KEOg

Note the ping throughout it all.

Post-game testing showed I had an packet loss of almost 50%, something that was completely out of my hands. Local ping checks during the gave me the expected numbers every time, yet...well, the clip kinda tells its own story.

This would help so much. I live in a house with 3 other people and sometimes they like to watch Netflix. I usually have 111 ping, but when they're watching Netflix, it goes up to 200. Which I can play with. The bad part though is it fluctuates from 150-200 constantly and its hard to play on. And so I don't like to play ranked with the ping, but I play normals fine with it.

TLDR; I need it to check my ping before I go into a ranked game

Wráthful1 votes

in most cases ppl know that their ping is an issue knowing it they just play ranked hoping that their team is good enough to play 4v5...

TitusBlackwell1 votes

A helpful fellow wrote a little program for it, it's the first link in his post. It's not always dead on but tends to give a good estimate :)

and btw ppl with such ping doesnt have this ping this problem from this day its a long term problem which cannot be fixed from itself like most ppl expect to happen. there arent enough harsh punishments for ppl going into ranked game with known ping issues.

No sadly the technology isn't there yet.

Checking Teamspeak ping is a decent alternative.

I tend to ping google.com to test it before I go in game.

There is a way. It's the G-key.

I'll see my way out now..

Votable Jester1 votes

I'm confused.

Elohaven1 votes

It's a method of pinging. Other players and you can see your "ping".

Khadaver1 votes

The post is asking for a way to see your ping before you get into a game, in the client. Not a way to show ping.

Elohaven1 votes

It's a joke.

Votable Jester1 votes

Ahh thanks. I just didn't get it because I've changed my keys around a lot. xD

4th3t0s1 votes

run the command prompt DOS window type ping 104.160.131.1 /t

Keep in mind this is the Chicago server, the IP will change depending on your location.

ahferroin71 votes

Agreed, but you missed one of the points that most people don't get: Just like scaling on abilities, network latency is an integral bit of information to the game. We absolutely should not need to use third party software to determine it (especially since we can't actually ping the servers directly outside of the client).

4th3t0s1 votes

Yes, but it isn't Riot's responsibility to cover your inability to notice you're torrenting porn when you queue for a game.

LichKing2341 votes

i mean it must be some good ass porn that you lost a game for

ahferroin71 votes

There are all kinds of other reasons that your latency could be crap. Windows updates immediately come to mind, as do hardware problems, other people on the network, and quite a few other things that aren't really under your control. Put another way, how am I supposed to know if my roommate has decided to reinstall Destiny or my ISP is suddenly having latency issues?

I could care less about things that I have control over. I literally built my own router from scratch just to cut my network latency, so I'd say I've got significantly better control over my network conditions than a vast majority of people. There are still things I have zero control over though, and I shouldn't need to be using third party software to just see if any such things are likely to be an immediate issue the moment I start a game.

4th3t0s1 votes

This is why I posted a method to ping the game server directly in my other comment.

ahferroin71 votes

You're missing the point. You shouldn't need external software to check this. Period.

Subiee1 votes

Its called speedtest.net

Check you latency and down/up before queue if your that worried about it

LichKing2341 votes

or just make a custom room password and just have a custom match by yourself i do it before i start playing a game of league so i know my ping is alright
