Why are players complaining about the new Ryze concept?

I'm not talking about the current numbers balance on the kit but more about the concept in general. I searched the last weeks Ryze posts and there's a lot of complaints about him not being tanky enough, mana not being beneficial enough, not being consistent damage wise, etc. but I just don't get it. all that stuff can be tweaked to balanced.

I personally think RIOT's current concept is awesome...

  1. Through the new passive, RIOT created windows of opportunity for Ryze that are somewhat manageable for the player. At least more than with Gnar's transformation.
  2. They allow opponents to see where he is with his stacks so they can tell when to engage... or just shut him down with CC... or disengage for a few seconds.
  3. The above combined with the new Q skill shot makes him much more fun and challenging both to play and play against.
  4. Like Rumble, passive management will differentiate the good players from the great ones.

The kit numbers can be tweaked until they are balanced but you gotta admit his current kit is weighing him down. Riot can't buff him to a good spot with how he's currently designed while the new kit gives much more wiggle room that way. Am I that wrong???

P.S. But I do hope they keep him as a bruiser and not make him too squishy or being ganked without your passive ready will be a death sentence.

they either need to go ahead and remove all targeted abilities, or keep them as is and tweak them, its getting ridiculous with these slow rolls. ryze will be the new veigar. major dumpster status.

These are the kinds of posts that I'm seeing but I'm just not understanding the "why" behind them. Why is it so wrong if they change a single ability to a skillshot if they kept the other two targeted? Why will he be the new Veigar? Not all changes are bad by default...

it changes his play style, his build, and what hes effective against, if its a SS which he needs to hit the first target against he now needs to get around minions or clear the wave before going after his target, or now he needs to flash as opposed to hitting you behind minions. he cant playmake from in lane now.

People just like to bitch about change.

u can hid begind minions before because of q's short range. u can hide behind q now because it's a 1 target skillshot. if they hid in the middle of the minion wave before u can harass them with Qs and auto attacks, If they hide inside the minion wave now they get hit by a very powerful new e. I don't get the rage.

Well, i guess the Ryze Update is not that bad at all (I just feel like, he´s loosing alot of his unique playstyle), but:

The last updated Champ was Veigar, and we all know what happend to him! (Rest in Pepperoni) Now seeing another Champs gets a targeted spell turned into a skillshot and a becoming less reliable, (Ryze Passive) is not amusing. Addintional many people dont like the other Reworks (Heimy, Xerath), so they´re pretty sceptical about any rework. ^^

But they've also pulled off some good reworks. The Sion rework was awesome, and... alright, maybe that's all I can really think of but it shows they have the potential to do it right and I'm cautiously optimistic based on what I've read that they've done it right with Ryze :)

I'm quite sure the problem is that the "rework" seems more like a straight nerf than anything else to him. There's a few reasons why I think this.

  1. His Q is becoming a skillshot. There is no way of viewing this as anything other than a nerf. But Ryze really needed to be updated like this, so it allows them to add power elsewhere. Regardless of this though, the Q is a nerf.

  2. His W. They've reduced the root duration of this spell early on, requiring you to put more points into it to be effective. At rank 1, it has a 0.75s root, which is laughably short. But hey, they reduced the cooldown from 17.5 to 14 seconds. Still, until you reach later into the game, this is a nerf. Later on, the spell itself is better (but we'll get to that)

  3. His E. Such a missed opportunity to make this spell actually more interesting. It hits a lot of targets, but it's still very similar to the live version. It's not used very often. Still, it hits 6 targets instead of 4, so that is technically a buff.

  4. The Passive and Ultimate. They've removed Ryze's current passive of reducing the cooldowns of his spells by 1 second when cast a spell. His new passive, a way that they've attempted to incorporate it into a more manageable passive, is that you require to build up stacks of "Arcane Mastery" by casting spells. It lasts for 12 seconds, and at 5 stacks he gets 3-6 seconds where he gets a shield (Really small, but it's a passive shield, so whatever to the smaller size). Additionally, casting spells reduces the cooldown of your other spells by the cooldown of his Q (around 4 seconds). This sounds awesome and cool, allowing the player to have windows where they're strong. However, you require to build up these stacks with 5 spell casts, meaning that for a fairly large amount of the time, you'll essentially be the old Ryze without his passive. The time duration where you do get to be better than the old Ryze is really short, and having a little shield doesn't exactly make up for it.

The Ultimate is the part where things get Weird. The Passive cooldown reduction is actually quite useful for the first 2 ranks of the ultimate, but by the third it is generally no longer relevant. I with this would instantly give you 5 stacks of your passive, since it really doesn't have the feel of an ultimate.
