@Riot -- VGUs, Mid-Scope Updates, and Unique Strategic Identities

When champions receive mid-scope updates like Rek'Sai, Talon, or Sejuani, they usually come alongside changes to their niche that better cement their unique roles in the game. Talon for example is now the champion you pick when you want a roam-heavy assassin on your team, and Sejuani's distinctiveness as a vanguard comes from her unique synergy with melee champions. But, for champions who are on the VGU list that have already received changes to their niche in the past, what will the direction be for their kits moving forward? Will their reworks focus around the niches they were intended to have as part of their updates, or replace it with entirely new ones?

Case in point, Mordekaiser's a good example of a champion who's in line for a full VGU but already received an entirely new strategic niche as part of his rework (bot lane AP juggernaut). The update wasn't very successful though, not only in terms of balanceability but also resonance (Morde mains weren't happy with it, and it didn't really fit him as a character). Given this unique situation then, will Morde's rework set out to give him an entirely new niche, or will it focus around making him the bot lane AP juggernaut he was intended to be?

I ask not only because I'm interested in Morde, but also other champions I play whose reworks haven't been entirely successful either (Quinn, LeBlanc). In Quinn's case I feel she doesn't really belong to the marksman class and could use a niche that better suits her aside from roaming, and in LB's case, her niche wasn't really well-executed on (deceiver), not to mention it removed her from the assassin space. In both cases though, it seems like their niches simply weren't unique enough, as Quinn's kit makes it so that her niche ends up sharing a lot of similarities with Talon (roaming burst damage-dealer), and Shaco has the ability to deceive just as well if not moreso than LB while also being an assassin.

VGU's all start with an assessment of what about the champion should be kept, what other opportunities there are, what should be discarded and what should be kept but improved upon. To use Morde as an example then whenever we get around to him we'd want to have the discussion around whether to keep his duo lane mechanics or not for example, but certainly wouldn't feel bound to just because a previous update had added them.

what about OVERLAPPING niches?

For instance Tristana is supposed to be a "tower buster" but then again so isZiggs while Tower Busting is also a very resonant theme in Jinx .

Another overlapping niche problem would be Jungling Marksmen of whom Kindred and Graves both fight each other for

then I think would be Sona and Nami . both supports really tend to do very similar things (initiating ultimate, sporadic heals,on-hit buffs and extra movespeed )

and last but not least KogMaw and Vayne are simultaneously hailed as "tank busters"

Is having multiple characters sort of "contest" the same niche okay so long as each character fufills a different class? In other words do you think having multiple champions sort of duel for specific strategic spaces is good for the game?

Another example would be Akali Diana . Pretty much a contest between who is the better one.

any informations about him keeping the duo lane mechanics or not?

believe it or not but there are a lot of mordekaiser mains dedicated to him in the botlane (me included), it was played this year in pro, it would be really awesome if he can still go into the botlane

On the topic of Morde. I think the most important argument if he should keep his duo lane aspects isn't about it being "cool" or "unique" but rather a sustainable niche for him in a game that's constantly evolving.

I personally couldn't care less about where he is played but rather if he feels **good **to play and doesn't just feel like a gimpy cheese pick that relies on the enemy not really knowing what he does.

Just my two cents on the topic. I personally do enjoy bot lane Morde a lot but feel thematically he resonates more with Solo lane players.

I feel obliged to mention that "Morde mains" were not that dissatisfied with the rework, and that all the most prominent Morde main on the boards or on Youtube now play Morde mostly in botlane...

Actually they were at the beginning, but Riot fixed a lot of stuff over the following months.
