Crippling overspecialization; what no one seems to learn.

Another anvil that I have dropped so many times the past year alone, I have left a crater on the planet deeper than the Challenger Deep, and still no one can buy a clue. I don't know if I can attribute this to cognitive dissonance, blinding, stroke inducing ignorance, insanity, or people subscribing to Someone Else's Problem as their ism. But seriously, what the hell is wrong with the playerbase?!

I am a very, very, VERY, EXTRAORDINARILY jaded support main. The last year was both the best and worst of times for supports; we got huge boosts to our utility, items geared towards us, Braum, and trinkets and ward limits so we weren't dedicated ward mules. At the same time, the brief collective seizure that was Hexakill, the Feral Flare, and the assassin meta created an environment that is beyond toxic.

I didn't choose to become a support main; the role fell into my lap during Season 3 when people would rather drink a gallon of bleach than play one game as support. After a while, I noticed that the role was compensating for everything the team lacked, and as we entered season 4, what the teams lacked grew, and continued to grow, and has never stopped growing since.

At first, I warned people whenever we would be all assassin/all damage. No one took the hint that when you are almost all melee with barely a slow between four of the players... well, you should either be especially sure of your game, or be prepared to face the consequence of your crippling overspecialization. If you are all in damage and nothing else, what do you do once that stops working? You have nothing else to fall back on. Now... I don't warn people anymore. No one has bothered to buy a clue for the past year, and with the overreaction to the tank buffs, to what people are calling the tank meta, I'm pretty certain they will continue to not learn.

The primary role of the support is to do two things; compliment the strengths of the rest of the team, and compensate for their weaknesses. In depth, this includes warding, applying buffs, crowd control, heals, scouting ahead, and helping allies. The more things the rest of the team either can't or is unwilling to do, the support is expected to pick up. This includes tanking, stealing dragon/baron (I've been ordered to do this more times than I can count on both hands), pushing lanes, smashing towers, defending lanes, holding back siege minions, peeling allies, and the list goes on for a mile and a half. At its worst, i don't even get the privilege of recalling, a basic liberty that everyone takes for granted. Even if I have less than a hundred HP and no mana, I'm expected to run in and help someone else try and secure a kill, and I've been reported for doing otherwise.

This has to stop. Stop specializing as a team in one thing. It doesn't work. It has never worked, even in the arms race that was the assassin meta last year. That ship has long since sailed, and now the weaknesses of an all damage team has been made all the more apparent, but in an exercise of sheer insanity, no one gets this, and then I'm expected to cover up everyone else's shortcomings. I'll continue to support - because someone has to - but I'm tired of going far beyond the call of duty when others can barely fulfill their own roles. People want to be shortsighted, then they can continue to wallow in ignorance. I'm done trying to beat their heads in with this anvil.

I've noticed a lot of players that complain about the tank meta, after checking their match history, almost never pick into their team. They think it's tanks that are OP, yet they're playing glass cannon team comps.

It's not the team with the most tanks that wins, it's the team without a tank at all that struggles the most. Tanks are just as important as having an adc or support now, and you do'nt see any complaints about an adc meta (well, okay maybe a few). One tank being mandatory on a team is a lot less unhealthy than being able to take three assassins and always win.

This is basically it. I personally feel like the whole "tank meta" thing is a load of bull. It's more like comps are going back to what they once were. It's annoying to have a tank top, tank jungler, then have people get mad at me for not taking a Thresh / Naut / Leona. You don't need a million tanks people, diversify your teams a little bit and you'll have more success. As long as you have a tank or something to keep tanks away you can beat them just fine. When your team goes Zed / Lee Sin / Ashe / Sona / Riven or some shit, you're just asking to get rolled by a team with a solid tank or two. Then they come here and make a new post about "Tank Meta SOOOO OP."

You know what's awesome about having tanks? You can pick squishy supports without fear for teamfights (Leona and Thresh have always been dominant, and people realized Nautilus has always been good).

You know who compliments tanks? Soraka. Her equinox is a bitch to land, but when you have cc tanks it's a hell of a lot easier to land it. Or maybe Sona, who can speed up your tanks and give them a shield to boot, providing them with backup cc. And don't even get me started on Lulu.

Those three alone will make your frontline even more unkillable.

But for some reason, whenever I pick a non-tank support I get onto a team like Riven MasterYi Yasuo Tristana (yes, they don't even bother to have different types of damage to make it even slightly hard for enemy tanks to counter them).

Granted, there's no one pick that will save that team, not even Braum, but it's a really frustrating thing to see when you're in teambuilder and already locked onto Soraka Sona Lulu Nami or Janna .

Maybe I just need to learn to exercise that "find another team" button more...

Ugh, that solo carry mentality. Nobody looks at their team comp with that.

Then wonder why they can't instagib anyone, then realizing everyone and their mother picked up a cheap chain vest as an easy counter.

I ran Lulu with Luden's Echo and Lich Bane last night. That wasn't my intention from the start, but the enemy was focusing me HARD, and I was basically the only mage on our team. The entire latter half of the game I was more on edge than a Vietnam vet with PTSD, shooting everything that crossed my line of sight and nuking down their assassins and suppressing Sion. If it wasn't for my Polymorph, Sion would have taken our Nexus when he died.

There should be some kind of checklist what every team needs.

Physical damage? Magic damage? Crowd control? Objective taking? Mobility? Engage? Disengage? Early game power? Mid game power? Late game power?

It would be great if people thought about that in champ select. Not every team needs everything, but it would be nice if most people thought about covering each others weaknesses.

junglerboy161 votes

Yeah, I try to make sure I go through a similar checklist whenever I'm in champ select. The only difference between yours and mine is that I also think about team comp. You do want to specialize your team to a certain extent, because if half your team is built for siege, half for split-push, and everyone is decent at team fighting, you're not going to fare nearly as well as the full on siege+disengage team comp or the hard engage pick comp because your team is overly generalized.

A team of katarina, nidalee, ezreal, tryndamere, and yi isn't overspecalized.

It's just retarded.

I am not shitting I went against that team once and they could not comprehend the idea that their teamcomp was bad because each individual champ was "so op"

junglerboy161 votes

Yeah, I know what you mean, I once went up against a Caitlyn Ezreal Jinx MasterYi Ahri team, and basically the Ahri was top/mid, the Yi was jungle, Ezreal was mid/bot, Caitlyn was bot, and Jinx was just roaming all over the place taking whatever farm they could get. They had a huge advantage at first, until me and the other tanks on my team realized that they were all squishy champs who suffered from hard CC.

When i read posts like this i have to ask myself how someone continues to play a game that has clearly long ago ceased to be fun. What is it about this game that causes people to play it despite hating it?

Lost R4 votes

The game itself is fun, even if the community can be a stack of pricks at times.

I can feel them feels man.

I think it's because League is significantly more complex than some of the other games out there and it's easy for players to get stuck in this Rock<Paper<Scissors/Pokemon/Lane mindset. Most people never grow out of it either. The difference between a good player and a bad player is whether or not they understand: skirmishing, team-fighting and objectives. Lanes don't matter, counters don't matter, none of it matters as long as you have a team that is willing to play with you and follow up with the plays that you do make.

I primarily play top lane. I'm lacking in damage diversity because I stick to ap but I do look at my team and the enemy team and pick accordingly from my personal best Champs. DrMundo Heimerdinger Vladimir Lulu Malzahar can't think of a champion that not one of these can deal with.

Yorick One does not simply deal with the King of the Top Lane.

Malz doesn't even need to go AD to deal with that, just throw your space aids on the wave and watch it farm for you.

Of coarse this is obviously a YoloQ problem. The people their expect to carry with their best champions rather than work as a team. Part of the reason the team is full of carries. Makes me wonder if these people ever learn how to play a tank.

I usually love it how whenever I'm last pick support, the team expects me to be the teams tank. (using support level gold)

It is possible to build a team without a tank. But each member of your comp has to fulfill at least part of the Tanks role. For example, an Engage mage. (think Liss, Kenen, or Kass) who can go into the enemy team real quickly, and do a lot of blanket damage while locking them down. (and they can do this a lot safer once they finish Zonya's) while a good Bruiser (say Hercarim or Irelia) who can harry the enemy team with damage while being fairly hard to kill. Even the supports (like Leona) can provide a fair amount of engage power.

That might be a little too generalist. Your team can specialize in one aspect or one point in the game. You just have to make sure you play to your win conditions. If your team is Stronger in the Early mid game, and you have some level of Neutral objective control, then you probably want to be snowballing of Dragons.

similarly, you should consider how certain champions complement each other when in champ select. If You were last pick Jungle and where looking for a tank. If you had Azir mid and Jinx ADC, I would suggest picking Nunu, because his Blood boil would complement both of those champions. This also would give you a pretty good win condition, Baron. Because Jinx would be extremely good a killing baron while you would be good at securing it.

It's so weird. I've heard "get a clue" but never "buy a clue". Then I look it up, and the person who wrote the only definition I can find has the same attitude you do. What a weird coincidence.

He said that because they are for sale in the shop. They are purely cosmetic though.

This is why I fear Team Builder Ranked. You think it's bad now? Just wait until people will ONLY play top or mid or adc every match. Without being forced to become a more rounded player (by playing roles/champs you do not normally play) the hyper specialization will lead to this even more so.

Delioth1 votes

Step 1: Read Post Step 2: Realize that post is talking about overspecialization in team comps, not players' skills.

Verxint1 votes

This reminds me of something my friends would do during the s3 or s4 assassin meta. I played ADC jax or Xin or something like that bot. It really only worked because enemy teams were full of jayce, zed, and sona or some shit like that and never had enough cc to stop a rampaging crit building xin. We didn't use a marksman top or mid, we ran a melee carry comp.

The reason I mention this is because many of these people complained about how it was OP rather than realizing that a team of 4 damage dealers with low CC doesn't counter melee carries.

overall this connects to the league community general ability to adapt or think critically about the game. In those same matches where I'm a a Jax as the carry for my team, and we have no marksman, zed and Katarina still try to start every teamfight by jumping on me cold and assassinating me. If I was positioned where I was as an ADC, it would have been the right idea for them. But I was a Jax. However, the meta at the time was just to fling everything at the ADC because either both died to assassin's and the fight played out or one survived somehow and swept the fight. These people didn't think about how to counter our strategy, they just thought "kill their damage dealer".

So.... don't pick shitty team-comps?

That's pretty much exactly what he said. Everyone picks the same thing, and they won't listen when he warns them that "Hey guys can someone play a tank? we are way on the squishy side?" or what happened recently: "Anyone good as a damage dealer? we have great cc... but we aren't going to be able to kill any of them"

"Well it's not my fault we have a bad team comp, you guys should have played around me" "You were last pick" "Omg stfu scrub support you're 0/3 gg reported"

Hello, a fellow support main here, and I get you. Teammates want us to be able to wave clear and steeal objectives, then report us for building AP. I have literally gotten flamed by my ADC for building item 3504, on SORAKA for crying out loud! I guess they don't what the free AS I give them, or the stronger heals. I've been flamed for using my poke to secure kills that my ADC did not have, they call it a KS when clearly they were the ones running away with little to no HP, while the enemy also escaped with his life, until I landed an ability. Oh Well, I guess the suppors will always be needed, but never be wanted item 3070...
