Support maltreatment - Yet again you find another line to cross

Lost R··195 votes·9,226 views

The sins of the community continue to stack up. This new one is unforgivable. More than that, you have proven me exactly right in my ongoing narrative of the institutionalized support maltreatment.

So during the draft pick again, I agree to trade with (who else) Xin. I'm the support, as always, and I prefer to go last so I can better compensate for whatever shortcomings we end up having, because that's just another job the support has to do. I want Nami. They don't have Nami. I list a few other champions I would prefer. They pick one that I didn't list. One I didn't want. One who I almost never play. The absolute worst one, considering our and the enemy's lineup.

Alistar.

Why? In Xin's reasoning "Alistar is really good right now. I want Alistar."

He locks it in, even after I tell him no. Then he and the rest of the team proceed to belittle and berate me every goddamn minute of the game for over an HOUR. Then I get a four man report at the end of the game and god knows if they were able to convince the enemy team to report me (god knows they tried), even though we won, even though I pulled more than my own weight in that game.

And no, this isn't a matter of "oh, you just ran into a troll premade". That's the community's excuse for everything. Not everyone out there is premade, and this isn't the first and sure as shit not the last time this has happened. Literally no other role out there gets treated this poorly, not even the jungler. No one else would dare give a mid-laner Lux over Zed, but because it's the support, people think they are entitled to just about anything and everything. They think they're allowed to hold absolute command over the support, telling them who to pick, what to build, and whether or not they work in your favor, once you're done with them, shoot them and go get a new one. After all, they're only a dime a dozen, it's really easy to just go find a new one, right?

........right?!

How long was your last queue? I keep hearing stories about how it takes people 20-30 minutes just to find one match. Want to know why it's taking so long? Because you have turned the support into an endangered species. Not only have you failed MISERABLY to change your behavior, even as you have begun to feel the ill effects starting this season, but you have actually gotten worse. It seems to have become a challenge by the community to drive the support role into extinction.

Because of that, I hope Riot doesn't release Solo Queue.

In fact, I want them to get rid of everything EXCEPT Dynamic Queue.

I want you all to experience the effects of the years of constant maltreatment and disenfranchisement you have cast on the supports. I want the lobby to be your blank screen.

This isn't Riot's doing; it's all you.

And I hope you pay dearly for it.

That was intense.

As an ADC main, and someone who is terrified of going as support because I know how pivotal it is, I extend what apologies I can. I can't count the number of times a support has gotten me fed or saved my life.

To the supports! http://game-smack.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/Big-Boss-Salute-720x408.jpg (this was the best picture I could find)

One of my favorite things as a support main is when I end up playing ADC and I get a sup that truly carries me (Because I'm a trash ADC) so I can say at the end of the game, "TY Thresh/Nami/Braum for carrying me." and then honor them.

I had a Naut do that for me earlier. I was ecstatic to have such a great Naut player supporting me.

Reading this broke my heart and I feel your pain, especially as an ex-support main.

I don't know what the fuck is wrong with people these days, it's like somewhere people started thinking it's cool to be disrespectful and mean to others, why? I have no cleu.

Sometimes when I start a match I just mute everyone, even if no one has been toxic. Whenever I make a single mistake, I always make sure to mute my whole team, before they have the chance to flame me, because I know it will put me on tilt considerably lowering my chance to win.

I've also disabled cross chat, because opposing team never has anything meaningful or nice to say so I don't even see the point having it turned on. I main main jungle now so I still get massive ammounts of flame, luckily though I don't have to witness the full extent of it. This has increased my winnings stats considerably, I play far more successfully now, I even turn alot of games around I would have simply given up on before, but question is:

Is it right? Should it have to be this way?

Lost R7 votes

Do you even have to ask? If it exists, it's meant to be used. If playing the game means we have to block everyone, in a team-based, multiplayer game, then what the hell are we doing?!

I became a support main within the first few months of starting League as a result of watching as would-be supports who got the role as a result of not calling any other role fast enough throw entire games in ranked and do things that would and did get themselves permabanned. On accounts they clearly spent money on. All to avoid being support for even one second. So I did it so no one else would have to in an increasingly futile attempt to have a normal game. That was back at the very beginning of Season Three. And I'm going to continue being a support main because if not me, then who else?

Baby Ghoul31 votes

For everyone that thinks this is not common, or OP is exaggerating, just play 5 games in a row as support.

This community is the reason we're seeing 3/0/0 Annie Brand summoner 14 item 3089 bot lane. If you rage at your support and treat them like they're not human, you have nobody else to blame when your support does not grab item 2049 .

People are starting to give up on that role all together, because on top of the crappy attitude people give you, the support role continues to be neglected by Riot. Scaling is broken, gold income is a joke, and the itemization is terrible.

There's a reason that support queue times are so short. Everyone is more likely to be toxic towards you if you're a support, so many of my friends who used to be support mains like me have asked, "Whats the point?" You can't really carry as a support, but people treat you like the game rests on your shoulders alone. They'd rather play a role that has a chance.

When you play support you'll quickly see that people treat supports like they own them.

  • They treat you like you're their ward bitch.
  • They consistently fail to realize supports cannot light up the map with vision when they have Sightstone. Their main objective is map control. You will not survive if you do not use your trinket.
  • They blame you for losing team fights or objectives, you're always the first one to be singled out even though you're least likely to hit 18 before the game is up and you definitely have the least amount of gold.

My other game I actually got a thank you from a teammate in the post screen, and it shocked me how uncommon that was. I'm normally on the verge of getting into an argument with someone, to the point where I almost always mute now. I do not need to do that for any other role I play.

Another common thing I see on soloqueue is I pick a support I want to play with my ADC, and someone bans that support because I don't do what they tell me to do. For reference I do not play some off meta AD LeBlanc support. I'm so not a special snowflake. I'm talking actual primary supports that are considered powerful by many, but because I said I'm more comfortable playing so and so, they just ban them. Suggestions are fine, but the support gets to choose who they play, and if it does not hurt your team comp, then you have no reason to make a fuss.

It's frustrating and something I do not experience in any other role. I really can't stress that last part enough.

"You want Braum? Okay. locks in Sona/Nami/Quinn" that would have been my response to them. No one has the right to demand you play a certain champ. They can ask you to not play a certain champion, but that's it. And before somestarts a discussion about the Quinn, it's not a troll thing. She's really good at supporting if done right. I do it if we need to shut down them down mid/late and no one else has the power to do so.

That is definitely not true. Many champs are too dormant on gold to be useful and many don't have the early game stats to be good at sup

EROTIC RAID BOSS1 votes

Any adc Anything with high mana costs low base stats Anything that requires good scaling to be useful late game Even lux is pretty troll as a sup you're just hurting your team

I hate my ADC2 votes

Lux is pretty troll as a support? Are you even remotely serious?

DrOinkleBerry2 votes

I played almost exclusive support Lux when I was maining her a month ago, because when you que Mid/Sup, you get sup 99/100 times. And I have to say, holy crap, she is a wonderful support. She's weak to strong all-in supports like Alistar and Leona, but otherwise she is a zoning goddess that can make crucial crutch plays with her shield and snare. Late game she deals almost the same damage as your mid-laner, in addition to having splendid synchronicity with the AP support items (Ardent Censor + Windspeaker Lux is amazing).

So anyone who could possibly say she is a troll support is just...... wrong. Empirically wrong. It's like saying Morgana is a troll support. What in the hell brings someone to think that?

DazedOnlooker9 votes

"You want Braum? Okay."

Kennen "Stand behind Kennen!"

I sure as hell don't take lightly to people banning my pick intents. Once had someone ban out my Sona because they wanted a tank support. They got a Kennen support instead (the only tank sup i had at the time was Thresh...but the enemy team 1st picked him). They were lucky that i did not have ban power, because i usually retaliate by banning their pick intents as well.

But don't get me wrong; I still want to win, and i will support you as usual, but if we end up 0/5 by the end of the laning phase, don't fking blame it on my support "troll-pick", because if i had played as Sona; it would have probably ended the same way; all due to missplays. Not because Ken was a troll pick, off meta , can't be a support champ >_>. I have seen Ahri supports do more work than the enemy Brand support...If they win their lane with the off meta sup...its OP, but if they lose, its a "troll pick". Funny how that logic works. Never mind the obvious lack of skill/misplays

crippler383 votes

I was in a normal game the guy played talon support into shaco support, it was awful (mostly because enemy got quite a few ganks and the riven was too busy flaming the devourer aatrox and aatrox was getting hurt feelings over that) but he said people flamed him for picking talon. I'll be honest anyone can support all it really requires is you to just be able to survive on the low gold income, literally pick anyone as long as they have

1.harass 2. cc 3. tankyness 4. a need only for a few items to do their job

the talon rushed the max level gold coin/sightstone then duskblade, that was all the damage he needed to 100-0 my friend whenever he wanted post 6. I'm not saying you should always pick something like an assassin in the support role but it really only matters on 2 things.

  1. what your team needs
  2. what your enemy has

if the enemy team doesn't have a support with too good of cc who cares if you pick an assassin? I mean you're going to all in like a leona only instead of ccing them for your adc to kill them, YOU just kill them.

Nothing wrong with that right?

You know what I do when they ban my pick intend? I take Nasus Support, or Warwick, or Urgot. Recently they banned my Taric Jungle, so I gave them Soraka instead.

Teaches them a lesson, especially because I'm not even trolling. I know how to make all these work and Soraka is even my best Jungler.

LordForrest1 votes

What? Dude if that is true about soraka, and you are not just a shitty jungler in general, you are a god. Also nasus and urgot i can totally understand how that would work in support. Warwick, though, would be really weird.

Duke Anax3 votes

Well I am a Soraka main and not the greatest jungler (still my CS is even worse)

Only shows that champion mastery can be worth a lot more than Meta.

Warwick is weird, but it works, he got up to 40% AS aura, Vision. and with Targons Brace he can even sustain some on Hungering Strike. The most impressive is his Ult on Black Cleaver though, instantly prepares the enemy for the ADC. It's hillarious on Jhin, With Blood Scent they can't hide from his ult.

Arbitrary first rule of solo queue: YOU DON'T TRADE FOR NOBODY. Second arbitrary first rule of solo queue that applies to support: YOU SUPPORT. YOUR WAY.

That is all.

An issue I've been seeing is the mishaps that occur when ppl are allowed to think. So what seems like an effective first step is to prevent situation where people have to think in the first place.

(note: I don't actually say these things to ppl, lawl. even whiners, like meh, have their limits) Gnar "What is your build?" Soraka item 3165 "It's called, Shut up."

Gotta love the adcs who tell you to go roam and danger ping you everytime you try to come bot lane.

Unstoppable Monk4 votes

This is why I have adopted roaming as my main support style.

They keep pushing the lane and they're going to blame you anyway for their crappy CS skills. And make it impossible to to anything in lane other than watch your ADC fail to last hit nuke the siege minion as you were trying to tap it for relic.

AwesomeChad8 votes

Kind of brutal comments at the end there but i share your sentiments towards support mistreatment. Back in season 5 when people jumped into champion select and called out preferred roles in chat, I used to receive some flak for picking my preferred supports over what the adc or team wanted. This was at diamond 3 elo and at this elo, people obviously have their own preferences as to what they want to play with (generally ppl wanted me to play a healer but im always in favor of hook champions). But, u still have to respect that every player has their own varying champion pool. At my elo, supports are much more respected because they are the enablers of the team. They allow the adc to play aggressive. They can roam to open up to plays for the other laners as well.

long story short, your negative experiences are due to the ignorance of the players of lower elo. Supports enable their team to make the plays. I understand this because im an adc main that learned support to help me improve at my own role. People need to play support so they can understand how this role actually works as opposed to what they perceive.

KrugLyfe6 votes

You supports sicken me. I don't mind the humble ones but it's the ones who are like you that piss me off. The ones that play the victim even though everyone gets treated badly when there's a toxic team. You act as if you deserve special treatment because of the role you play. You don't trust me you're just like everyone else playing your role and trying to win.

I suggest playing the champion you think can benefit the team well, you're comfortable with, and is flexible with what they can do/build.

Right now, as a Nami one-trick pony, I really do recommend her. If she's your most comfortable support and you are willing to build according to what the team needs, go for it. She's currently the better Sona, in my opinion, who was one of the best supports in previous seasons.

Though to be honest, Riot needs to review how reporting works because it's absolute garbage currently...

As a frequent jungler I respect my support. I know what it's like having somebody think I'm their slave, and they have to LANE with one of those somebody's.

Szunray5 votes

The moment they locked in Alistar, you should have taken smite and just Jungled as Xin. Seriously, how dare you fuck up an hour of my time by going rogue on our agreement at the last second. I'm not above being petty, and i can't really let things like that "go". People need to understand that I am a person, not an AI designed to make them happy.

I've refused trades like this. When people first ban my intended champ, I've been known to queue dodge at the last possible second, wasting everyone's time (after letting them know why of course) . And you will get raged at, but I guarantee that they they'll think twice about doing it to someone else, and you'll definitely feel better about the situation afterward, instead of feeling like you were "forced to take it lying down".

I hate my ADC3 votes

I've seen, heard and been part of support horror stories before, but that... just wow. Honestly, if that happened to me, I would have refuse the trade and told the jungler: "You want an Alistar in your team? Fine. You Jungle Alistar and I'll support Xin. If you don't like it, feel free to dodge. I am not your b*tch."

As a support main, I'm 100% with you. You need one hell of a thick skin to deal with the amount of maltreatment. I've personally grown to be stone cold in League of Legends to anyone but my friends or those who respect their supports. Which is also why I renamed to "I hate my ADC" and why I refuse to bend over to toxic and negative players.

There is however another side to the coin. As much as I see a lot of maltreatment, I also get a lot more love than I do when I play another role. I've never had anyone thank me for going 11/0/12 with Lux mid without help from my jungler. I've had people thank me for going 2/4/10 with Lux support. And I've stopped counting the amount of friend requests I received and the amount of time someone said "A good support like you is so rare." to me.

That other side is hard to see behind all the toxicity and negativity, but after what seems to be over 2k games as a support, I've finally managed to ignore the bad stuff and focus on the bright and constructive. It's just sad that it take this much to be a support.

The best part of being a support main: I've got plenty of stories to tell. Good and bad ones. Like this time when an enemy Fizz said: "OMG WHO FED THE SONA" Or when I gave my team the choice between Leona and Nautilus in champ select and someone said they love me. Or the game where a split pushing Ezreal said my only purpose was to protect and follow him everywhere on the map which was followed by the rest of the team telling him to f*ck off.

Cookimonster3161 votes

I don't think you have the right idea as to why there are so little supports, I believe that it is because it is the least noticeable role on the team. The adc does a shit ton of damage and "carries" the game, the mid laner usually can make flashy plays with tons of damage, the jungler can gank lanes and get objectives, the top laner can split push and make summoner 12 plays, while the support gives vision, peels, and sets up kills. While I believe support is just as, if not more, important than other roles, it's just not that noticeable compared to all of the other roles in the game. So, I don't believe it is the community that makes this role so "rare" it is just the role in general. I used to main support and now I main jungle and I've seen my fair share of assholes complaining about both roles (although, I believe more people blame the jungler). Oh, I've had someone try to trade me RekSai before when I was jungling (I don't own her) so that isn't a support thing, hell I saw a guy instalock Cassiopeia for our mid who wanted to play Azir.

Beldair4 votes

So true with the Jungle blame...

"Where the hell was my gank?" "What the hell are you doing jg?"

I could go on but it is similar to Supports.

And the other roles get some blame but support and jg do get a lot.

Also, why was your team belittling and berating you the entire time? Was it only because you said you didn't want to play Alistar in the beginning? You've left out some context. I don't think I've ever had that happen to me over a champion preference.

It's a lengthy list.

Because I didn't rush sightstone. Because I didn't have a sightstone (nobody knows what the fucking support items do anymore) Because I got killed by the enemy. Because we lost lane. Because I ulted the turret to destroy it (attack damage bonus; apparently people forget THAT'S a thing, too) Because I got a kill. Because I destroyed a turret. Because I killed minions getting to the turret. Because I burned flash trying to hit Morgana. Because I failed the Headbutt/Pulverize combo. Because I type in perfect English (I am not kidding). Because the enemy got dragon. Because I headbutted the wrong enemy. Because I didn't destroy a vision ward. Because I got caught trying to destroy the vision ward they just yelled at me for not destroying. Because I built Sheen. Because I had more deaths than kills. Because I didn't tank a turret for my allies (low on health and my ult was down) Because I didn't tank a turret long enough (once again) Because I'm a "fucking bronze fucking ass retard shitfucker" Because I'm not good with Alistar. Because I nearly "singlehandedly" lost us the game. Because I was "intentionally feeding"

Want me to go on?
