This should be the only recipe to follow for yummy reworks

In my opinion a rework has those objectives :

  • raise the popularity and playing rate of a champion.

  • keep the main concepts and ideas by modernising them mecanicaly ( it must be recognisable but not almost the same).

  • keep the signature of a champion. Its core identity. If necessary when too unique keep the ult with some alterations but while keeping the main effect of it.

If those objectives are reached it will be a good rework.

Nunu got a good visual design. The par monster/man friendship is still there. Even if it lost his creepyness it's recognisable. Only regrets are some skins themes which have been removed but it should be okay.

When it comes to the spells it's near perfection. Nunu kit was centered around the e : the snowball. A unique spell dealing tons of damage. Riot removed his w and made it his passive. The w became the giant snowball and that is the spell dealing tons of damage. Plus they made it a skillshot so it is healthier. The kept the e a snowball stunning opponents.

Then they did it they kept the ult. This was the most important spell of nunu that was with the snowball his signature move and a part of its core identity.

I wished the person or the team that worked on nunu worked on swain, aatrox amd galio too.

Swain core's identity was : Noxian leader and beatrice. His R was his signature move. They should have centered the gameplay around the crow hybrid human. Instead we got malfoy lucius fused with vladimir.

Galio's core identity was : A rock gargoyle with magic powers aka a wizard. His gameplay was centered around long range spells and taunts allowing him to regen. He was meant to be a mage anti AP. I think they overdid it with the melee fighting thing. Galio was meant to have very strong high range fast spells. His old q was way more in the right theme. The new one deals way too much damage without requiring a lot of skillshot accuracy. For the autos thing His autos were melee only to make him take more risks while engaging and farming.

The old ult was galio's core identity and it has been removed. It was a good ult and it was a gamebreaker when used at the right moment like malphites ult.

The new ult was to accomodate with the new galio theme : super hero... it doesn't fit the character at all if we compare with the pre rework. The ult is a shen ult with a bump. However was that really galio ? I meam a rocky gargoyle is heavy and slow.

Result galio's play rate increased not a lot but most of the players which liked him stopped to play him. It just felt like a new champion. And i liked old galio a lot. The new one i played him 3 times and i was well i don't feel i'm playing galio anymore.

Aatrox core idemtity was : a sword giving and sucking power and habilities from his host. In my opinnion the new ult was a great addition. The new passive was right in the theme. However the main spells didn't went all along with the theme and the gameplay. Here is what should have been aatrox sword gamplay design it sucked life and power out of things and hosts and ennemies

For the visuals he was a dark, thin and agile fencer. Not a rambo with a 2 handed sword ^^.There was so many possibilities. I don't say i would have made better. I just say i would have tried to follow the theme and core identity in a better way.

Nunu is the best example of what should have been done with those above. When you play new nunu you still feel playing nunu. It has only been modernized and it didn't required to give him dashes or new spells. Just improving the old spells and redesigning them around the same main concepts and it was done.

The thing is that Riot couldn't come from the same ideal direction with those three as they did with Nunu and Warwick.

Nunu and Warwick just needed a hefty dose of modernization. Their visuals were outdated, they were too statchecky at times, and their kits were unacceptably bland for a modern-day champion. But, the underlying core of the kit was fine, so Riot could simply just update them, instead of having to balance the need to keep as much of their old identity as possible with the need to make a healthy champion.

For Swain, I'd argue this is what happened. His R is a lot the same, just instead of being a switch for "Draintank mana waster" mode, it's a massively damaging ability that has a much more clear window of when it's up, when it's a threat, when you need to take it into consideration (but not necessarily fear it), and when it's simply not available. His root similar, but much more visually cool and interactive, and the other two abilities (An invulnerable Heimer turret and a...point and click damage boost, I believe?) were too uninteractive and boring to salvage, honestly.

Aatrox, now...he just wasn't the same case. Leading up to his rework, Aatrox basically just became a draintank who ran at you with item 3124 and Conquerer and just cut you down or died. There wasn't much Riot could keep out of that, but they managed to salvage the revive (and made it the player's choice instead of being "lmfao it's only going to be up right now while you're fighting minions and not when you're actually fighting champions"), and the small-area knockup on his Q.

I wouldn't say that old Aatrox was much of a fencer, or agile. He ran at you fast lashing the sword like it was a whip, not any fencing or even anything that looked skilled. He was as poor a representation of elegant and killed fighting as Jax is now (How does pretending to be a helicopter with a lamppost make you dodge attacks, anyways?). New Aatrox is a lot more methodical in it - slow, yes, but his strikes hurt. That actually speaks a lot more to elegance to me than his old kit did.

Now, old Galio...What even was he? I only saw him about 3 times pre-rework. He was not a popular champion (new Galio isn't that popular, either, sure, but he's played a lot more at all tiers), so I can't even remember much about his kit. I know he had his current W as his ult, and wasn't his E's passive his W before? I dunno.
