@Riot, can you recycle Old/current Rengars Q animation as a crit animation?

Sahn Uzal··80 votes·2,060 views

I mean the animation already exists, I don't see why not :3 Rengars Rengar current crit animation has some overlap with his new Q animation, so giving him 2 Crit animations wouldn't hurt either :P

Seconded.

Also perhaps do the same thing for Champions without recall animations. For instance, the animation where Varus looks at his locket and then up would be very good for a recall on his base skins. Hecarim's pose where he kneels would also work for him.

A MM post that's negative, this is a rare pepe indeed.

This. So much. I thought of it for a long time too and with the exact same examples! :D

Annoyingly, I can't think of anything for Vladimir that would fit.

LOL I misinterpreted the title and read it as everyone's crit animation should be like that, and then I had this image in my head of Yasuo running around jabbing his sword awkwardly at everything. Every. Single. Autoattack.

Because they did everything rengar is in PBE from scratch, to many bugs. In the PBE that animation doesn't exist. Maybe i'm wrong.

Sahn Uzal1 votes

Even if they completely redid his coding, it doesn't remove his model, rigging and animations :P The command that triggers the animation is gone.

Vistha Kai3 votes

That's not how programming works.

They should have those assets backed-up, regardless of how extensive his rework was.

50000000000000002 votes

Even if it's somehow gone, they can just pull it from the current patch anyway lol

ChaoticPinecone2 votes

...actually, thats not how programming works either.

If they completely redid Rengar from the ground up (assuming significant changes within the code, since there would be no point in recoding Rengar the exact same as he was), I would highly doubt that using the code from his previous Q animation would seamlessly fit into his new code without a whole host of problems.

The Blue Rajah3 votes

But they didn't completely recode him. It wasn't on the scale of a vgu. He still has the same model, they just made new animations for him.

Nuparu1 votes

After playing him, they did in fact recode a massive amount of him, to the point where probably only the skeleton class (being a playable char that takes inputs) was the only thing that remained.

His Leap, his BTN, his Q, his W, his E, and ult - they all seem different (sound effects, visual effects, actual effects) and have some things that used to exist now gone (E being fucking wonky mid air, old Q AA reset with the really fucking awesome visual effect, his W armor/mr per person hit...)

RogueWill4 votes

As long as he has the same model the animation can still be recycled but the code needs to be twitched. Is not as easy as the OP makes it sound like but is easier than doing a new animation from scratch...then again why waste resources on a product that is about to hit shelves?

Vistha Kai1 votes

I'm pretty sure that's a law in Riot to backup anything they are doing or changing. That isn't a part of programming per se, but everyday's work in every department.

  1. As long as Rengar's model remains the same as long as so called "bones" are concerned, all animations he had previously should be reusable without any modifications to them.
  2. A basic attack is most likely composed of parts such as when it does trigger, when it does damage and a few other "flags" animation included.

Look, when somebody requested Master Yi's dance animation to scale with MS it was done in the next patch and the Rioter who did it said "The hardest part was using calc.exe to find a reasonable multiplier" and also added "this feature required whole 1 line of additional code".

Don't make it sound unbelievably hard, because that simply isn't true.

Rengar already had that attack, so as long as they have assets it could be as simple as changing one line of code, swapping the "when used Q" with "when used crit".

ChaoticPinecone1 votes

I'm not saying they dont have the old code. I'm saying there will be problems copying his old code into his new model's code.

Changing a dance animation's refresh speed to match MS is one thing - you already have a bug-free code implemented into the current model, and all you have to do is recode the refresh rate of the dance animation to some multiplier of his movespeed.

This is adding in new code that we dont know will fit or wont fit into the changed model. I'm not saying it cant be done. I'm saying its probably not as easy as copy-pasting the old code in the new code. And we dont know if the "bones" are the same, we dont know if the old spell animation are coded differently than basic attack animations, and we dont know how the old Q animation will interact with his new attack animations.

Vistha Kai1 votes

You are thinking about it too much.

Model is the same. It'd be highly counter-productive to change it in any shape or form, unless it's absolutely necessary, because doing so would require to redo every single animation even those you had no intetion to change in the first place and double-check if they are working correctly. This is why textures are the only thing that Riot changes about champion models without calling a team to do a VGU.

Coding, oh boy, the coding. His old/live Q is a glorified basic attack. It'd be much easier to change his old Q into a basic attack, than it would be to change his new Q into a basic attack. And as I said before, nothing about Rengar's model structure changed, so it's still fully compatible.

I mean, I'd be able to do it right now using Wooxy. It'd be a swap, yes, but it'd be functioning correctly with 100% accuracy.

ChaoticPinecone1 votes

You actually dont know if anything about Rengar's model structure has changed. Youre also assuming his live Q is coded as a basic attack. And youre assuming a perfect, structured code in place where such a swaps is both feasible and coded in a way to allow such swaps.

Youre talking about a program where Morde's ghost is breaking, on patches with no Morde changes, even though the skill has been relatively unchanged since pre-rework.

Because of the spaghetti code in place, little changes become big problems. And thats what I'm trying to point out to you - adding a little thing like his old Q animation to a crit animation might become a big problem. Its just not as simple as you want it to be.

Vistha Kai1 votes

I'm not making assumptions. Of all things models, textures, animations and particles are in fact that easy to change, even for people not associated with Riot. Not to mention I'm sure Rengar's model haven't changed, because as I said before it'd be fool's errand unless they have technology in place to make modifications to champion rigs that easy to apply.

And I'm 110% sure they don't. Remember how Rioters were talking about the making of Super Galaxy Rumble skin? They had to in fact create that skin completely from grounds up, because his "classic" rig is unusable in it's current state and yet it's still here.

Any change to a champion's rig multiplies the amount of work needed, that's why any logical person isn't going to change it, unless absolutely necessary.

Yes, swapping is easy, creating a new entry for a new crit attack could prove harder. I don't disagree with that.

As for Mordekaiser glitches. Everybody knows his rework was half-assed, so I'm not surprised he has many bugs.

ChaoticPinecone1 votes

You are making assumptions. You dont know anything - you think that they wouldnt, but you arent sure. Like Super Galaxy Rumble - you would assume they used his original model, but they didnt. And his original model is "unusable", yet its still here. You really dont know what they used and what they changed, or why they needed to change it.

And you dont know whats reasonable or not - champions get updated all the time, and some people think those updates are "unreasonable" or "unnecessary". But it happens anyway and Riot obviously thinks its an important enough effort to undertake. And there is always a reason to recode from the ground up, at least for some of the older champions in League - its to start anew and get rid of the spaghetti code from dozens of patches and several reworks.

And I think its kinda funny that you acknowledge that Morde's rework was half-assed and created a ton of problems. Thats exactly what I'm afraid is going to happen if you haphazardly try and force this animation into Rengar's crit - it ends up being half-assed and going to cause a ton of problems.

I have a better idea. Recycle his old Q.

Please, riot. I want this so I can play crit rango.

Considering in a couple weeks when the assassin rework hits live and his q isn't even autoattack based anymore. No, probably not.

Zydron5 votes

He is asking to use the old q's animation for his crits

This makes sense because his new q is also a thrust like his current critical animation and it would be a nice way to preserve his original q animation

^ pretty much this :P

tbh his pbe Q animation is the clunkiest shit i've seen.

I agree, the animation itself just feels like a crit animation when you look at it and it'd make for a nice little throwback.
