League of Legends Needs Better Tutorials & More Of Them.

The skill floor of League of Legends has gone up over time. The majority of players up until this Season have been in the Bronze tier. This season, for the first time ever since the game was created, over half of the player base is now located in the Silver ranks. More and more knowledge of roles, game mechanics, and objectives is required to win these days however the game itself doesn't give players any understanding of these things. Instead players are forced to go to outside sources or learn from another player which a vast number of players are unwilling to do.

While there is no cookie cutter method of winning games, the tutorials in League of Legends could use massive amounts of work. There should be in-depth guides and scenarios which teach you the game, including what to build and what to do in different situations depending on which role and class you are playing.

What exactly do I mean?

  • Tutorial on Unlocking The View Screen
  • Tutorial on Basic Item Purchases (For Each Class: Marksman, Mage, Bruiser, Support)
  • Tutorial on The Jungle & What To Do
  • Tutorial on Split Pushing
  • Tutorial on Grievous Wounds (AP / AD / Tank)
  • Tutorial on Dragon
  • Tutorial on Rift Herald
  • Tutorial on Baron Nashor
  • Tutorial on Each Class & Their Objective
  • Tutorial on How To Team Fight (As Each Class: Bruiser / Tank, AP / AD Carry, Support)
  • Tutorial on The Advantages of Warding & Where To Ward

All of these are basic information which should be available for players to learn inside of the game, things that players SHOULD be forced to learn before ever queuing up for any ranked game mode (Solo / Duo, 3v3, 5v5). I can't even fathom how League of Legends has existed for so long without such basic Tutorials being placed inside the game, but I really think a complete overhaul of the Tutorials should be done.

There are players, who have thousands of games, who do not even understand something as basic as the stages of a team fight. Just having that knowledge alone completely changes how players see the game. The sad part is, the only reason players do not learn it is because there was never anything inside of League of Legends that explains it.

League of Legends isn't the new kid on the block anymore. Maybe early on the funding, meta of the game, and technology didn't exist to create nice Tutorials for players.. but this is 8 years in where data is available for more matches than can be counted. The client was updated, and then even completely re-done. It's time for those ancient Tutorials to be scrapped, and for players to be given the proper Tutorials they deserve.

It is fun how same topics were downvoted to hell. The power of first votes.

I think some extra, optional tutorials could be fun. I think there shouldn’t be a ton of them, just some extra basics

-warding tips -neutral objectives (Rift herald, Baron, Dragon, red and blue buff) -Jungle tips for beginners

And maybe one or two more. League is a game of learning through experience. And champions are different enough within each role that I’d say a tutorial that can be accessed by a newb shouldn’t leave them confused.

You think this is only for new players? I can assure you, go into any Silver game and pay attention to your team and the enemies as well. How many of these players would you say actually understand why they do certain things? Every game I see players putting their ward down with vision of all 5 enemies, games where Bruisers & Tanks expect carries to initiate for their teams. Nearly every single game my team fights incorrectly, not focusing the tanks and not waiting for the enemies to blow key cool downs before they go in on the other team's carries.

These aren't obvious things, and it's information which I feel should be taught inside of the game. Even years into playing this game, I wasn't able to understand a lot of small things. The only information available are videos posted on YouTube, information given by Streamers, and boards such as Reddit. It shouldn't be a requirement, like it pretty much is, to go outside of the game for basic information that Riot should already be giving to players.

I'm sorry but the average rank of players is irrelevant to average player skill, since there's 50% people who win and 50% people who lose every game. If anything, it's indicative of Riot trying to satisfy the ego of players by giving them artificially better ranks via easier climbing like free wins in promo etc. It literally does not make sense to say "all players have improved in general because look the average elo is higher", because elo by definition is a classification of comparison between players. If literally all players were 800 times better, they would be at the exact same rank, because competing with 800 times better opponents. See what I mean?

In any case, more related to the subject; yeah tutorials would be fine, but why would Riot invest in it? People just learn the game by playing against each other, the tutorial only really learns you how to move, back, buy items and use abilities, which is something already I guess.

I don't think this argument entirely holds up, because game education affects quality of games, too, as well as balancing. Riot has been striving to improve game quality, for example, but considering how everything they change relies on a large set of systems, each of which requires players to be educated about them, it is more difficult to increase game quality if a large amount of players lacks the knowledge or awareness required for it. A game of chess or soccer wouldn't be particularly fun or interesting if the participants didn't know the basic rules either.

Moreover, another large part of League's problems comes from the large rift between standard and competitive play: at the competitive level, players have excellent knowledge of the game and metagame, and fully know how to use wards, counter-itemization, and rotations to their advantage. By contrast, at Bronze and Silver, i.e. 50% of the player base, most players barely ward at all. Effectively, we have two different Leagues going on, and Riot has been having trouble balancing for both. Raising the overall level of player education can only benefit the game in this respect, because if everyone is on the same page for at least basic stuff, it will push the performance of champions at different elos closer together, and thereby create less of a discrepancy in win and play rates.

It's also worth mentioning that the time it takes for a new player to learn the ropes in League directly competes with their first impressions: if a new player goes into a game, gets their ass handed to them, and is offered no clear path for improvement, they're very likely to quit and never come back. This applies for any game, not just League. Tutorials are a cornerstone of the game industry precisely because players absolutely need to know the basics of gameplay if they are to avoid getting frustrated, so even if these aren't always spelled out, they're baked into games one way or another to make for a much smoother learning curve. League has a lot to catch up on in this respect, and leaving it all to playing against other players has generated a lot of early burnout, as well as quite a few bad habits.

I think this is a good way of wording it.

I also believe, the more a player begins to understand where they are having a hard time and how to improve, the more sportsmanlike they will be to other players. In lower ranks, poor behavior is more prevalent simply because players don't understand the reasons why they should help their teammates or why their teammates will not help them. It all boils down to player knowledge. If all players on the team understand their roles and objective in the game, they're more likely to be on the same page. Players who are working together are more likely to be successful and enjoy playing together.

I think it's probably gonna be more effective to just let us make custom scenarios, so that we can make tutorials ourselves.
