The meta is not fun

Subject 5··101 votes·8,336 views

The meta is not fun to play anymore, when i first started playing league literally any champion was played with the exception of Urgot. Now, you see the same bans, champions and items that don't even require a brain to purchase. Why does Riot feel the need to create champions based on a player made meta that should not define a champion entirely? Why was Jinx made for bot lane? Why mid lane the only lane that has 99% mobility creep?

Lets be honest, League of legends has a 20/123 champion pool give or take, and banning? Literally, the same bans over and over and over . . . i can't even watch LCS because i found myself watching a replay that i had all ready watched, i honestly thought it was A DIFFERENT GAME! We have excuses like "Professionals play bullshit champions because they are bullshit" while professional play lee, thresh and the same champions over and over and over again, where the fuck are these nerfs at? Don't tell me Janna mid was so threatening that Zed took a shit in his pants quicker than spongebob throwing a peanut at a damn clam. Yeah she countered the role defined as MID and apparently that made her bullshit, fuck at least we get to see something different and are punished for it!

Items! Why do these even exist? There should be a button that says "Are you an adc?" you press it and it shits out the same items for you to buy, if you are full build it purchases an elixir. Seriously, can i have an answer? I'm finding it really hard to continue playing the same shit over and over, when i am done reading and studying i check the forums to see what people might actually be ranting about like myself, and find that a post is upvoted over a hundred times to find that Riot does not give a flying fuck.

TL;DR

When will items actually require a brain to purchase? And when will champion pools consist of more than 20 champions?

I don't mind LCS players playing the same thing over and over again, because they are playing what is best

I can't fault them for playing what is best when they want to win a tournament for huge amounts of money

I CAN fault Riot for keeping those clearly overpowered champions clearly overpowered and ffs I DO NOT want to hear another "Those champions are fine, l2p" NO! If they were fine they wouldn't be getting 10x more play/bans than every other champion

I don't mind the "meta". But I mind the same champions in every match in every region. Why bother to watch EU LCS when I know they are going to play the same (99%) characters that NA plays each time. I found myself turning off NA LCS (I have watched almost every game for 3 years) in week one. This is the first time I have done this for a pro game....

even china and SEA plays the same picks right now (S3 and S4 China had some incredibly strange picks), quite boring

ThePlasticSpork12 votes

Your question pretty much boils down to "When will there not be champions that are the best?" and the answer to that is "Never." The champion pool in LCS is 20 champions because they are playing to win in the LCS - not just playing for the sake of playing. If I was good enough at the game that I could make thousands by repeatedly picking Lee or J4, you can bet your sweet ass I would do it.

The reality is that League has too many characters to be balanced. For better or for worse, there is simply TOO much variety in League for everything to be competitive. I'm personally sick of seeing Lee and his similar high damage somewhat tanky cronies in the jungle, as well as Zed in the midlane, and would like for them to be nerfed, but something would just replace them as "the best".

Also, the reason AP Janna was nerfed so quickly is because she was just sitting at her tower and periodically throwing tornadoes to kill your whole wave with no chance of you interacting with her. She wasn't threatening to the enemy laner at all. She just made laning phase miserably bland in her favor. Loathe as I am to say it, that is quite a bit more obnoxious, frustrating, and boring than laning against Zed is.

In regards to itemization, you...literally picked the most static class in terms of itemization. ADCs are pretty much the only class that build the same items (with the exception of their 1 defensive item) regardless of what the enemy team is comprised of, and literally NO other class in the game is that narrowminded in terms of itemization.

Honestly, the only current competitive games I've played where a simple majority of the cast are competitively viable are King of Fighters 13 and Guilty Gear. KOF13, just for reference to league, only has 36 characters, or literally less than a third of the number of characters in League, and SNK Playmore has been making KOF games since '94, so they have a lot more experience in that field than Riot does in their own.

and what you (and MANY people) fail to see, is that LCS is a show, pro players don't play to win, they play to give a show to the people that watch LCS stream

if people stopped watching LCS stream, there would be no reason to win, no reason to play

I don't play DotA 2 so I don't have experience in that regard, although I doubt that DotA is balanced to the point where there aren't characters that are at least marginally better than others.

The second part of your post was just deliberately pedantic. The reason that professional League players make so much money is because so many people watch them, yes. It's the same reason other professional sports players make so much money. How, exactly, that somehow means that they're not playing to win is entirely beyond me and you're gonna have to explain the gap in logic there. The reason sports are fun to watch is because you're watching the best of the best compete against each other and try their hardest to win. I mean, the crowd would probably go wild if a pro player picked Mordekaiser, but they don't do it because that doesn't produce optimal win conditions.

The number of characters can be balanced. They won't be perfectly balanced, but it isn't much to ask for Riot to be far better than they are.

It has zero to do with the number of characters and everything to do with the balance team playing favorites.

it's a show for us, it's competition for them. Saying they should play to appease the viewers is ridiculous, that's like saying NFL teams should stop winning if they're constantly successful because people will get tired of seeing them win, and if nobodies watching, then they wouldn't have an NFL to play in.

The teams in the LCS job is to do whatever they can to win, we watch because we like seeing the competition, nobody would watch if they weren't giving themselves the best possible chance to win every game.

Dota 2 doesn't balance champions, rather it circumvents this entirely by making every single champion effectively 'broken' therby tending to come down more to either Hard counters or who acted first then anything else.

never played Dota 2 but repeats random words he has heard from people who never played it either

Dota 2 has no "broken" hero, they are all balanced according to their design phylosophy

problem is LoL doesn't balanced their champions to its design phylosophy (not every of them at least)

most obvious examples:

Janna mid S2, Zyra post S3 Worlds (hello nearly 100% pick/ban Thresh, you got barely scratched by the nerf bat!), Sona right now

Regulas9 votes

I was an original longtime Dota player and have graced Dota 2. In Dota games Power (All forms of offensive actions)>Defense (Stats/abilities/mobility), such that even those characters that have weak power still have greater power then Defense. The result is that even a weak character can still beat a strong character if you play it out properly or land your abilities right, it also means the strong characters can be less reliant on their allies and team-mates as their power can get disproportionately larger then the enemies team defences. In contrast lol has high defensive stats and large mobility, this means that if you are in a weaker state it's extremely difficult to overcome the opponent even if you play properly.

As a result of Dota 2's power metric this also means hard counters are far far more important, some characters (mostly the carries) like Faceless Void for example need one of the various counter choices (and their are plenty), otherwise a good Void can potentially win 1v5. In contrast in LoL even if you play spectacularly and get really fed if the rest of your team isn't good enough you will still easily loose.

Gray Fanchon2 votes

That was rather interesting, thanks for the information. :) Always neat to hear about the differences between LoL and Dota.

VDc0zCqe0w2 votes

at this point i'd like to understand LoL's design pattern

let's talk about Zyra for example (yes i'm still salty about 3.13): released as mid laner (broken)

then she got nerfed, and she was not broken anymore as a midlaner, but broken as support

insanely overnerfed after worlds (3.13, while Thresh, who had shared the spot as most contested support at S3 worlds, barely got touched), never played for like 4-5 months (who the hell would have played that overnerfed mess?), then frostfang got buffed, so Zyra was quite playable again as support (even having a quite low winrate in competitive), then frostfang got nerfed again (indirect nerf), never played again

then in preseason, mana regen nerfs

but hey, i guess people will come here and say "LOL Zyra is completely fine, nevermind if she's never picked competitively, while even FUCKING BLITZCRANK got picked, i mean, she's COMPLETELY fine, i am a bronze scrub trying to look cool on the forums, just trust me!"

/end rant

pls update shy2 votes

I wouldn't say any champs in dota 2 are super op at the pro level. At the scrub level there are a few but even then it's relatively balanced. What does happen though is certain strategies can be put together that take advantage of a bunch of specific champs that work together well to win. For example the Chinese teams running the 5 man "Deathball" strats at TI4, Alliance and their famed "Rat Dota."

Wirius15 votes

Lol, NO. You're playing to win a million dollars. You honestly think they play just for show? No, you play to win, NOTHING else matters.

tooitchy5 votes

As a long time FG player the balance in those games also comes down to "how does this character do against each character 1v1", whereas in a MOBA it's "how does this character fit into a team of 5, vs. another team of 5" as well as "how does this character handle level 1 in X lane/level 2 in X lane/level 3, etc." they have characters that are evolving throughout the game both in terms of their abilities, and an item pool that has many items with many different effects and scaling with these abilities. It's not only more difficult, it's infinitely more involved because the character itself has a huge number of variables that change each minute of the game, whereas fighting games you have a character that is the exact same the first second of round 1, as he is the final second of round 3/5/7. They also have to balance how this character fits into a team, what effect does each skill have on the other 4 members of their team, as well as all 5 of the enemy team, is it a debuff that increases allied damage to that target? Is it a Zilean bomb that has an aoe affect, or a slow?

There are just so many more factors in creating and balancing a character in a game like this that you end up with a small number who fulfill the most requirements of a role, and synergize well with characters who also best fulfill their role requirements.

It's remarkable that there are as many champions in the game as there are, and while the pros may not use champs like Urgot Cassiopeia Heimerdinger Yorick much, you can pick them in your own games, and be successful with them.

All that said, I too find the meta to be tedious right now, but I also remember hearing the exact same thing 2 years ago, and 3 years ago, that the game was stale with all the Trundle Gangplank and Karthus play. There will always be a revolving cast at the top, it's the nature of competitive gaming with many unique characters to choose from, and there will always be people tired of it.

The Epicer ONe1 votes

quite on the contrary outside of the lcs cass is insanely strong.

tooitchy1 votes

That's why I said the pros may not use her, but you can, and be successful with her. Actually, if you listed all the champs that aren't used in the LCS. you'd end up with way too many, that doesn't mean they aren't good, in fact there are quite a few champs that simply work better for solo queue, the LCS and other competitive team formats rely on champs that synergize with the entire team in a way that also works to negate those picked by the opposition, this is such a narrow field of champs because the criteria is strict, which is why no matter what Riot does to balance, there will always be a small pool for the LCS, it just simply doesn't mean that those other champs are not good, they just don't work as well for that specific style of play.

You are completely negating one the main points of the OP in regards to the same 20 champions. Anytime someone discovers something new to counter the current meta (ie Janna Mid) they nerf it and keep the same 20 champions. A counter shouldn't be nerfed because its boring to watch.

ThePlasticSpork4 votes

AP Janna went beyond boring to watch, and didn't produce good gameplay patterns.

I fail to see why a champion that plays the laning phase by hugging turret and throwing a single ability to destroy an entire wave ad nauseam is something Riot should even pretend to maintain.

I'm not saying that laning against Zed every game in midlane is a huge improvement, merely that AP Janna is the WRONG example to cite in terms of unconventional playstyles.

MajorPain91 votes

So by your current standards the only two AP mids really holding there own right now should be nerfed because they use that same exact strategy? Malz and Heimer operate on the same basis, and are currently the only real picks mid that uses mana because of this (it also helps that they were not hit by the mana nerfs as hard as the others.)

ThePlasticSpork2 votes

Malz and Heimer are both pretty far from competitive picks, and you're stuffing words in my mouth outside of that.

Malzahar's E in particular doesn't come ANYWHERE close to Janna's old Q early game in terms of waveclear. If Malz hugs turret and simply plants his E on something, then his E will not clear the wave. Malz is much more interactive in lane than AP Janna was, and pretending otherwise is just silly.

In regards to Heimerdinger, he has also proven extremely problematic because when he's strong he auto wins against champions without access to range, and then proceeds to destroy towers, so again, not a good example. However, Heimerdinger has interactivity in that you can destroy his turrets to reduce his waveclear, so once again, even he is more interactive in lane than AP Janna was.

MajorPain91 votes

It does enough damage with passive to clear the wave though, while keeping him in safe territory. Same with Heimer turrets and placement near tower. Will they get the maximum amount of CS? Probably not, but neither was old Janna Q early game. I've used them both up to plat, and did viably with them. If your trying to argue Diamond up then I agree, but that's what we are arguing about now isn't it?

OyddAWqJ5r8 votes

I couldn't agree more. The game has boiled down from "find your own playstyle" to "search the best build up for the current best champions". Because the non-fotm/LCS champions are far weaker than the fotm/LCS champions. So much so that if you want to have any chance at winning you better play what's considered OP at the moment. I too remember the time where what is "OP" could be beaten by a skilled player using one of their favorite champions. Now what's OP can only be beaten by what's OP. It's really boring.

I don't even like the fotm's and I like them even less for being fotm's. I stop playing my favorite champions when they become fotm's... or atleast I used to when I had a choice because I liked playing the game my way with some unique playstyle. S3 was full AD Renekton top and top Hecarim. S4 was mostly playing post-rework Kassadin upon his release when everyone said he was bad but I found super awesome and OP with item 3025 and then he got buffed and was even more OP with it and people still said he was bad. But all the sudden a pro player whipped it out in LCS and then bam, everyone calls Kass OP and rides the bandwagon straight to nerf city. But just the ignorant bandwagon itself made me stop playing Kass (but that was before I hit Diamond with him and Talon, who was also underplayed at the time). But now I'm forced to conform to the meta and fotm's or lose every game I try to be a hipster in.

It is up to us to change the Meta, not Riot.

How do we do this?

  1. Stop getting mad when someone doesnt follow the meta.

  2. Stop following the meta, but make sure what you are doing can actually work.

  3. Make what you try work, it might not always be good but dont give up on it.

  4. When you find something that works, tell everyone about it. Hopefully it will become wide-spread and popular. This brings us to step 5...

  5. Find out what counters what you just made meta and abuse it >:D

The meta is just an excuse to play every "viable" champion there is, and leaving out or completely abandoning every other champ. The meta is a safety net. If one single person picks something they think is off meta, they will get shat in with negativity. I don't really care about the meta if that person knows EXACTLY what they are doing.

-_- in every game imaginable there are select strategies that are clearly above the rest.

If the meta makes you sick, why play ranked?

Go play ARAM or Team Builder. I play "weird" stuff all the time in Team Builder and so do tons of other people.

Ranked is about winning and if you don't pick to win, you are doing it wrong.

If they knock down one meta a new one will form and there will be an equal number of shit posts complaining about it.

Hellish Prophecy2 votes

As much as this makes sense, this does apply to Team Builder and when he does play ranked he might be seeing the same bans over. And over. And over. Just because OP refers to something that's in ranked doesn't mean they are solely talking about ranked. The meta-humpers (those who follow the meta STRICTLY ALWAYS and attack people who don't) are IN TEAM BUILDER TOO. I just had to wait 30 minutes because people kept leaving because my friend was doing Elise jung and "Elise not in meta anymore. She suck at jung"leaves It's ridiculous. The ONLY guy I see who doesn't do meta in ranked and even in norms is named Disco Heat on Youtube.

OyddAWqJ5r6 votes

I got to Diamond playing non-meta picks. How? Because I made my own meta. It's not so much that he hates the meta. He hates how small it is. As do I. The champion pool and available builds for those champions that are viable just aren't attractive at all. There's no room for creativity right now. You go to probuilds.com, find the best (and extremely overused) build for your champion and use it. Before you had room to theorycraft and make your own unique playstyle and make it work. Now there's no room for that. There's no more whipping out some crazy unique style of play or style of playing a champion anymore since the meta picks are meta picks because the meta has given them something that makes them outrageously stronger picks than every nonmeta pick.

It's just as you say, in every game there are strategies that are clearly above the rest. But League used to be about making those strategies. Now it's all about following Riot's preset strategies.

really? haven't played dota since long ago. But I am sure tank was exist, most popular was axe. And in my time, nobody considered pudge as a tank, he was a ganker, mid game monster, his tanking was that bad.

talking about this make me remember some memories in dota. There was no fixed meta, you can go 3-1-1/1-1-3, 2-1-2, 2-1-1+1/1-1-2+1. And everyone was okay if nobody picked carry, for example 5 of us picked early game monster (we called them nuker),

the only OP heroes I can think was bara and traxex.

I moved to league because B-net servers didn't last forever, haven't tried dota 2 though.

Well like the only roles in dota are carry, support or ganker. Cuz even if you get super fed as axe you will die in like 2-3 hits to a carry.

Thats just why I think its funny when LoL player say tanks die too fast here.

Meta is like 90% 3-1-1 and 10% 1-1-3 (same thing but sending supports+carry to the offlane)

No one said that, obviously supports are human beings too and they should have gold income.

Fighters are human beings too and they shouldn't get deleted in 2 sec when shot by ADCs especially if they are immobiles like Darius Trundle

Neither should they be stuck in a jungle where they are behind in terms of gold and exp.

Neither should they be pushed out of their lane because anti-melee cancer, who end up outscaling them like Quinn Lissandra Gnar Azir Kalista Vayne Lulu Ryze exist.

Bring season 2 back, keep supports with their gold. Everyone is happy except ADC mains might cry a little bit since they don't get to be the most dominant thing in the game for 40~ min.

I can't comment much about the item builds, except to see that they are perpetually in progress (which is not necessarily a bad thing). I have a big issue with the categorization of stale champion picks, especially in the LCS...

I'm not sure what the OP and other posters here are watching, but last week I watched the EU and NA LCS (10 games each). Here are some champion usage stats in those games:

EU LCS -- 40 different champions played (5 were played 5+ times, 19 were played 2-4 times, and 16 were played once). Of the 43 champions played or banned, 14 had pick/ban rate above 50% and 29 had pick/ban at 50% or below. The EU LCS used 11 champions that were not used in the NA LCS Week 1

NA LCS -- 36 different champions played (9 were played 5+ times, 16 were played 2-4 times, and 11 were played once). Of the 39 champions played or banned, 13 had pick/ban rate above 50%, and 26 had pick/ban at 50% or below. The NA LCS used 7 champions that were not used in the EU LCS Week 1

So, there were a total of 47 different champions used in the 20 games of Week 1. Additionally, if you were watching the games as broadcast, you never saw more than 4 of the same champion in a back-to-back game:

EU LCS -- Day 1: Games 1-2 shared 2 champions, 2-3 shared 2, 3-4 shared 4, and 4-5 shared 4. Day 2: Games 1-2 shared 3 champions, 2-3 shared 2, 3-4 shared 2, and 4-5 shared 1.

NA LCS -- Day 1: Games 1-2 shared 3 champions, 2-3 shared 4, 3-4 shared 2, and 4-5 shared 4. Day 2: Games 1-2 shared 3 champions, 2-3 shared 3, 3-4 shared 0 (!!), and 4-5 shared 2.

Conclusion? There is no acceptable best 5, 10, or even 20 champions among the EU and NA pros, and the games are pretty different to watch. If you are seeing the same champions back-to-back, your stream has messed up and you are watching the same game.

Play ARAM, it is sorta fun and you see a lot of variety (is actually a bit hard to win every time since you are playing with a champion that is somewhat unknow to you and most likely a crappy team composition)

If you are on 5v5 mood or just like it like that then I recommend team builder and play your favorite roll/champion.

If it is ranked, you can still play your favorite champions and just let them dance around a counter. I play Sejuani in the jungle often, the trends right now are lee sin and j4 and although I know how to play both of them if I feel like playing Sejuani I go sejuani. Most of the times skill alone compensates for the advantages a champions have just for being that champion. Granted you will not win all your games (but you probably won't win them all with the trend champions anyway) but you will have more fun.

As for the items the only real role where i buy the same items and on the same sequence is adc since there is no other way than build damge. Once I know a champion I cherry pick the items that most likely will benefit it the most (usually around 20) and from there I select 5 (1 is boots and the upgrade is situational, jungle is either speed, threads, Ionian or ninja tabi depending on the enemy) and only have 1 item that is a most (for junglers is usually omen) from there is pure situational. If you spend the time getting to know your champions and balance them with your ability and playstyle you will result in build that feels much more balanced and gets better results.

For example, I play Annie from time to time, many here will agree that DFG was a must for her since it will let her kill pretty much anyone with a single burst, but my reflexes are bad so even if I would buy DFG most of the times I wouldn't be able to finish the combo quickly enough and will result on losing the kill. So I decided to forget DFG and just buy it if i really need it. it may not have been the optimal option for annie as a champions but it was the optimal option for me as a player ( I would get some ap and magic pen and it would have about the same result)

SmokingPuffin2 votes

when i first started playing league literally any champion was played with the exception of Urgot.

That was only because nobody knew how to play. Give today's pros the season 2 game, and it's an extremely narrow meta. Expect to see a lot of Janna and Sona, with one of a couple metagolems up top and one of a couple level 2 gank specialists in the jungle. At ADC, we'll be playing Ezreal and Corki, with Graves available in case someone gets banned. Only mid has any variation at all, and even then, not much.

Champion diversity is not a new problem.

Lets be honest, League of legends has a 20/123 champion pool give or take

There's no need to be hyperbolic. Every LCS season features about 60 champions, with about 30 seeing regular play.

If Riot wanted to get to a state where everything was competitively played, they'd need to rework at least 20 champions and push more unique reasons to pick many more. As it stands right now, pairs like Graves and Lucian are just too similar, meaning you'll only pick one if the other is not available.

Don't tell me Janna mid was so threatening that Zed took a shit in his pants quicker than spongebob throwing a peanut at a damn clam.

Janna mid wasn't nerfed for LCS. She was nerfed because she was non-interactive in solo queue.

This is part of that thing that GC was discussing -- Riot doesn't really know what level of play they are targeting their balance changes for.
