Random Ideas for Items (geared towards AP Assassins)

Note that most of these items either have actives/passives that don't benefit mages very much or have actives/passives that are nerfed for ranged champions (mostly mages). All these items give AP Assassins more options, similar to AD Assassins, without allowing mages to abuse the items because they are mostly geared towards melee and single target attacks whereas Mages have a lot of AoE and are far ranged.

Most of the items provide movement speed which is what mages don't really need and provide no mana which is a stat that mages really like so using an item slot on these items would hurt their mana pools if they decide to go for these first over a mana item. In addition, none of the items provide CDR which is another stat mages like to have.

Although Book of Sorrow has stats that a Mage may like, the active requires them to be very close range which is something most of them want to stay away from. Divine Shadow's active is melee only and has a hefty price for an item that mages will only get half the use out of.

Aeon's Blade: Cost: 1250g (815g) Builds out of: Amplifying Tome -30 AP -4% Movement Speed -Unique Passive: +10 Magic Penetration

Divine Scepter: Cost: 2400g (715g) Builds out of: Amplifying Tome + Aeons Blade -60 AP -6% Movement Speed Unique Passive: +20 Magic Penetration Unique Passive: If an enemy champion is shielded (any type of shield), 50% of damage dealt to them will ignore the shield and do damage directly to their health bar (damage will ignore 25% of the shield for ranged champions)

Aether's Torment: Cost: 3000g (650g) Builds out of: Haunting Guise + Blasting Wand -275 Health -70 AP Unique Passive: +20 Magic Penetration Unique Passive: Each unique champion kill (not assist) permanently grants 10 out of comabt movement speed.

Book of Sorrow: Cost: 3700g (815g) Builds out of: Seeker's Armguard + Aeon's Blade + Amplifying Tome -80 AP -40 Armor -6% Movement Speed Unique Passive: +15 Magic Penetration Unique Active: Doing damage to an enemy champion that is within 200 range of you will heal you for 30% of the damage dealt (10% for AoE abilities) for 6 seconds.

Seal of the Ages: Cost: 2800g (1065g) Builds out of: Null Magic Mantel + Blasting Wand + Amplifying Tome -70 AP -45 Magic Resist Unique Passive: +20 out of combat movement speed Unique Active: For 6 seconds, single target spells and auto attacks against champions deal 20 - 100 (+20% AP)(+30% Bonus AD) magic damage over 3 seconds. This effect can refresh, but does not stack.

Divine Shadow: Cost: 3800g (1350g) Builds out of: Aeon's Blade + Seeker's Armguard -70 AP -45 Armor -8% Movement Speed -Unique Passive: +25 Magic Penetration -Unique Active (Melee Only): Channel for 1.5 seconds to grant a spell shield that blocks the next enemy ability. Lasts for 10 seconds.

Arkan's Tooth: Cost: 3100g (615g) Builds out of: Aeon's Blade + Amplifying Tome + Chain Vest -65 AP -45 Armor -Unique Passive: +15 Magic Penetration -Unique Passive: Upon taking physical damage that would reduce your health below 30%, gain a shield that blocks 150 + 1 per 5 AP physical damage for 4 seconds (2 seconds for ranged champions).

Bane of Affinity: Cost: 2700g (1000g) Builds out of: Aether Wisp + Blasting Wand -90 AP -8% Movement Speed Unique Passive: Using a mobility spell that damages an enemy champion grants the next single target spell or auto attack against them to deal an addition 50 (+10% AP)(+20% AD) true damage. Unique Active: Gain 30% Movement Speed for 6 seconds (3 seconds for ranged champions).

  1. Divine Scepter: 75% of the damage ignores the shield? I get that shields are annoying right now but ignoring 75% just seems petty. 50% seems more reasonable (with 25% for ranged).

  2. Aethers Torment: basically a permanent mejai's that gives health. Riot removed SOTA because it made some junglers harder to balance with how it effected their base stats. It should lose stacks on death, even if it requires the killing blow.

  3. Book of Sorrow: Vlad, Swain, and Mordekaiser would like this item for the same reason they liked spellvamp. Spellvamp is gone for a reason (yes I know about lifesteal and Deaths Dance, I'm not defending those).

  4. Seal of the Ages: looks fine imo. Teemo would become more annoying but he's always going to be annoying.

  5. Divine Shadow: This is just an AP edge of night. We shouldn't be asking for duplicate items for AD or AP (would love an AD hourglass but that ain't happening).

  6. Arkan's tooth: basically every AP tanks wet dream (so every tank except Sion and Poppy). Malphite's shield would be massive.

  7. Bane of Affinity: Ahri's wet dream. I don't think we should get items the increasingly encourage more mobility champions to be played imo. But that's more of a personal gripe.

Arkan's Tooth is also an AD equivalent of item 3156

Riot said the reason they didn't give AP items is because there's nothing stopping mages from using/abusing them. there's probably tons of unexplored design space though.

EDIT: a good start could be OOC movement speed, maybe.

  1. I was just sorta doing placeholders for numbers, but I think the idea was just to have an item to help AP Assassins not get completely screwed by shields, heals, etc. all at once.

  2. I was sorta going for the idea that Assassins are the class that want to get kills so giving them an item that rewards them for getting said kills would make sense. Maybe I could gear it towards a different stat like Out of Comabt Movement Speed instead or something.

  3. Swain's healing is AoE so I don't think it should be too much of a problem. Vlad's Q has 600 range so I don't think he'll get too much out of the item unless he wants to be in close range at all times which is typically something he doesn't want. Morde wouldn't be too bad either considering he's slow and has to get into melee range to do his damage in the first place. AP Assassins, however, are the ones that want to be up close and personal to their targets (within 200 range) so this caters to them more than those champions. Spellvamp was problematic in the past because it was active at all times during the game whereas this item is only active for 6 seconds at a time which makes it harder to abuse. Swain is getting a full VGU anyway and both Vlad and Morde aren't in the greatest spots atm so adding an item like this to buff them wouldn't be too bad.

  4. AP Assassins don't really have anything outside of Zhonyas to help them survive in a fight so I thought something similar to Edge of Night would be cool to have for AP Assassins.

  5. I guess I could probably switch the armor to AP then and lower the base as compensation so tanks can't abuse it. Probably something like 150 + 1 per 5 AP.

  6. Ahri was one of the champions I took into consideration with this item. She only makes use of the passive when she has her ult up and her Q and Ult are both AoE so they won't get the bonus effect from the passive. I guess her W might be a problem, but idk.

No matter what there are gonna be some mages that benefit from adding in items for AP Assassins, but I don't think any of these would be gamebreaking or abusable by any of the mages and it would be really helpful for AP Assassins that are having a hard time right now.

I don't consider them game breaking on Mages. I consider them game breaking on assassins.

Akali is SO HOT1 votes

Why is that then? The numbers are sorta just placeholders, but I don't think the idea behind any of the items would break the game for Assassins considering all of them are so bad right now.

I already stated my reasons in my opening post. Especially how two items are just AP versions of two existing items.

You shouldn't strive to copy the toys of others. You should make others jealous of your toys. I personally think Seal of the Ages is the best out of this list because it rewards sticking to a target. Something that an assassin may do if they can't outright kill them.

Still we need more defence items for ap champs, i mean ad champs have a defensive item for just about everything in the game. What with them having qss, maw and edge of night to just name a few. Meanwhile mages only get hourglass which for its price and stats it's barely worth buying anymore hell not even its passive is that good

Most mages are ranged.

Ahri's ult is Single Target for the purposes of damage, as well as Charm.

I like the ideas for a lot of these, but I do have to say the amount of magic pen they offer is ridiculous. You have to remember how low base magic resist is in comparison to armor, and how much harder it is to stack magic resist.

I get not all of them would be in the game at once but even just two of these items would make AP assassins do true damage, and that would be reason enough for AoE mages with low ratios to invest in these items

one does not simply take AD items and make an AP version of them

Bane of affinity sounds like a great item for AP ezreal :))))))))

Way too much Flat MPen flying around. It'd be the same problem Armor Pen had and we'd get it changed to Mysticality or something.

Don't see why Arkan's Tooth is reduced for Ranged champion if Hexdrinker/Maw isn't reduced for ADCs.

Seal of Ages would break Cass/Ryze mid.

Way too much %MS flying around too.

Missing Pox Arcana.

I like the idea of some of these, but a lot of them grant armor/magic resist and Assassins aren't supposed to be too tanky. I would remove the armor and MR on a bunch of these so that you only have one dedicated MR/Armor item as the two that we have now are effective too.

VoraciousX1 votes

I say keep Divine Scepter, Divine Shadow, and Arkan's Tooth, but remove the armor on Arkan's Tooth, reduce or remove the magic pen or armor on Divine Shadow, and if it seems too weak after that give it MR instead of armor. I don't think it needs to be melee only as Leblanc is also an AP assassin and it's honestly only going to be able to be used by people who are going to go into the middle of a fight anyways so AP Assassins will likely be the only ones to get any use out of it anyways.

item 3070 Leblanc Ahri item 3070

Shaco Akali Fizz Katarina Diana Kassadin : We hereby expel ye from the AP assassin's union, thou hast dabbled in the dark arts of sustained DPS, AoE, range, reliable CC and utility. Thou art banished to the realm of mage. I'm especially ashamed of you Ahri, I undestand you were shaken by the loss of your best friend, but you have gone too far.

Fizz Katarina Diana : Wait who the hell are you guys

Akali Kassadin : Um we, uh, hi.

Shaco : They're my old friends...

Fizz Katarina Diana : GET OUT.

on a more serious note:

I completely disagree with the range AUTO ATTACK limitation. There will be plenty of times Riot will want to make a ranged auto assassin. Also Galio+Maokai can get these items and Galio has ranged poke.

I do understand having some sort of range limitation. If a champion like LeBlanc or Katarina lands directly on a champion with their damaging mobility spell, then they're putting themselves in risk regardless of auto attack range. Bane of Affinity at worst gives LeBlanc a slight advantage when an idiot stands close to her return pad and she reactivates and used a longer range auto.

Book of sorrow does it right, 200 range spells, less than even Annie and Ryze. If you want these items to be used only on champions that put them in a risky spell range, then don't beat around the bush and say "oh well most tiny range spell AP champions are also melee", just outright limit it to the tiny range spells. This is especially good if you're playing someone like Galio who has long range poke tacked onto their tiny range kit: it only lets them take advantage of the times they do play into their tiny range.

defensive ones like arkan's tooth, just make it for both ranged and non ranged. Divine shadow is a bad idea overall and is just there for the sake of copying Veil but if it were added it should block a spell within x range since the fact it blocks karthus despite the item being made as an anti-anti engage not a clutch survival active.

Bane of affinity is practically assassin only. Book of sorrow will very rarely benefit a mage since it's like buying tank stats on an ADC - it does increase tankiness but by buying tank stats you lose on AD, crit, and AS, which stops lifesteal (the better survivability stat for ADCs) from being as effective. Mages who buy book of sorrow will just outright lose their range for a tiny amount of sustain, so they end up taking damage anyway.

aether's torment - kills within x range

seal of ages - sucks on most mages anyway and is good
