A Garen told me this at the end of my last game when I questioned his build.

Is "crit garen" a thing? ER? Maybe not the best itemization with the next thing we have to a tank is Lee Sin?
Ralanr3 votesIt's a thing. Not sure ER was at all a good choice (in fact I think it's ludicrous) but I know little of the rare crit Garen builds.
Tank Lee is kinda a thing. It's more BC then full tank Cinderhulk Lee. Because Lee can basically build anything at this point.

essence reaver on its own is trolly. in combnation with 
it makes sense. cdr is one of garens strongest offensive stats.
think about it like this. people have been building 
on manaless champions for quite a long time. the item is already so stat efficient that the wasted gold on mana isnt a big deal.
the same is true for essence reaver in combination with other crit items on garen.
however, crit garen mostly works against squishy teams, and when youre already snowballing. i wouldnt recommend it against very kitey and/or tanky teams.
sunfire is also ass in that case. crit garen plays like a skirmisher. you want to burst the fuck out of people with infinity edge empowered decisive strike crits + ult, then get the fuck out.
so mobility items like 
and 
are mandatory.
these items are kindof core on him right now anyways, due to how the armor shred on his spin stacks better with lethality than cleaver.

Exactly you stated it, but he dont had so his build wasn't fine.
Zelorxon2 votesIt was a thing 4 FUCKING SEASONS AGO, when trinity force still had crits, youumu still had crits, atma's impaler was an item and infinity edge gave 30% crit chance, so it was a decent crit item on it's own.
Right now it's absolutely dumb to go crit garen for obvious reasons i'm not going to talk about. It's nothing but a leftover of what garen was supposed to be several years ago, he got slightly updated and there was new items to suit his build so riot didn't changed the crit thing, but it doesn't absolutely means crit garen can be a viable build.
If you want to improve your damage on garen rather than going black cleaver>full tank i would recommend to go titanic hydra since he has an auto reset, but since his attack speed is cancerously slow i wouldn't recommend it either. Ionians on garen are dumb af. And for the simple fact that he built essence reaver on garen and overcapped cdr for no reason he should be perma'd in my opinion.
AeroWaffle1 votesIt is. It idea is, while you are pretty buttery, you rip through a squishy fast while they are unable to cast spells from the silence.
The issue of trying this strategy against say, a Varus, he has a reliable way to root you before your beyblade ass can get to him. And since it's a squishier build, it doesn't have the tank to outlast the root.

XinCrin1 votesAwful Garen build. Not enough damage to kill anyone but not tanky enough to actually tank some damage. Either go full tank with black cleaver or go full crit. Don't go both.
Anonagon1 votesGaren can and honestly probably should go more than just Black Cleaver for damage. ER is just a terrible choice, especially with as much CDR as he already had. IE and Ghostblade are good options, nothing else really. ER would be okay if he didn't go CDR boots.
