Unpopular opinion: Enchanters need a class update

Glory to God··52 votes·3,792 views

EDIT (as a header becausr it is literally impossinle do scroll down when editing on mobile): I see that I've triggered more people that I actually wanted, and to be honest the way I worded that last part out made it look like an over-exaggeration. I'm not denying that they don't have any tricks or that there are diferences between a bad and a good player, but most of the times it doesn't matter at all. It's no surprise that they are autofilled supports' favorites. You can master these champions, but you don't have to, because so much of their power budgets is invested in their defensive tools, that they simply don't have to interact with an enemy at all. Most adcs will only care if you're a four fingered hand, because many times you can, say, miss Q and hit W on a minion with Janna, and then press E on your adc to basically do the same thing. Call me biased, but all this bias is backed up by these champions' constant high winrates. My point is that these champions could be much more.

While I do understand that we will not have another class update for a very long time, maybe ever, I wish we had an Enchanter class update rather than this... cough Vanguard update. It should be more than a "apply shield when needed" subclass. It can be so much more. Let's analyze the members of this subclass, in consideration of Ghostcrawler's video about Successful Champions.

Best Enchanters (no changes needed): Taric Even as a tank, Taric is definitely one of the best examples regarding the subclass. The satisfaction of landing a perfect E or ult, or managing your passive IS there. The Dazzling Protector theme is well translated in his gameplay. The skill expression is also visible, especially in his E-flash mechanic. For a champion with only one skillshot ability, Taric doesn't feel overbearing to deal with. His uniqueness comes from his passive and his W.

Nami Another great example of an ideal Enchanter. Her ult feels very satisfying, she does feel like The Tidecaller, she does have some cool tricks (passive management, Q prediction, R positioning) which prove the player's skill, she does feel fair to play against, as her sustain tool drains a lot of mana, and she's pretty unique.

Mediocre Enchanters (could use some tweaks): Lulu : Lulu is pretty high on the list as well, but I admit that she does need some work. She feels satisfying to play in most cases (good ult timing/ Q aiming). She is kind of a weird champion, with Polymorph and Wild Growth, she does feel like the Fae Sorceress. Her fairness could use some help, as the only real thing you can do against her is to dodge her Q, and sometimes passive, which she doesn't rely on at all. She has some cool tricks like her ult canceling dashes/channels, her E on minion -> Q mechanic to catch enemies out of reach, but again, she could feel more rewarding to master. Finally, she is unique with a DPS passive, abilites which can be cast on allies and enemies and a new form of CC.

Karma : Karma is on a decent spot. She does have some satisfaction when you use the right Mantra-empowered ability, her theme resonates in her visuals and quotes. Her skill-expressiveness lacks clarity, as the only real thing worth admiring is her Q aiming. Fairness could, again, use some work. She isn't so unique compared to the aforementioned, she kinda feels like a more supportive LeBlanc (Waveclear/poke tool, rooting breakable chain, mobility tool and an ability enchanter.

Sona : Sona could use the most work in this section. A good ult is kind of satisfying. Her musical theme could be represented in a more elegant manner. Outside of a good ult and, say, good passive management, she's not that skill-expresssive. Not fair most of the time, she gives the "don't stay in range" mentality when she throws Qs, and if her numbers would be a little bigger then she'd be a monster. She's quite unique as she is the Aura champion, but her ult looks like a bunch of numbers.

Worst Enchanters (ironically, they're the "Passive supports"; they need serious work):

Alright, hear me out.

Passive supports shouldn't exist. That's right, the whole concept of passive supports scream non-interactiveness. Unless Riot finds a creative and genial way of making them feeling better to play as, with and against, this little group has to disappear. When their numbers are good, they dominate. When their numbers are bad, they're useless. There's no skill floor or skill ceiling, and they're half of Challenger supports' resort. And here they are.

Soraka : Again, extremely boring to play as, with and against. I don't think that I have to elaborate on this. Thematic: Soraka, the Starchild? More like Soraka the Bloodbag. There's no difference between a Soraka one-trick and a Soraka first-timer, there's no room for improvement. The fairness consists in building an early item 3123 . At least she has some uniqueness in her "donate HP", but nothing too much.

Janna : Janna mains, get ready to get triggered. This champion is a disaster. Satisfaction: No one ever opens their eyes in the morning and says "What a great day to play Janna!". Thematic: Excuse me. The "Wind's Fury"? According to her color story, she's actually some form of deity? I thought she was a floating prostitute with gassy problems. Skill-expression: "WOW JOHN THAT WAS A SICK SHIELD I DIDN'T KNOW YOU MAINED JANNA!" "Y...yeah. BTW what does my ultimate do?". Fairness: Yeah ok I'll dodge her Q which she throws once in a while to peel for her adc. Anything else? Uniqueness: Passive: item 3301 's quest buff or the Captain buff enchantment. Q: I guess it's the most original part of her kit..? W: Let me slow you with some damage. E: Haha. R: AoE Knockback with an AoE Heal.

Conclusion: While there are some great champions belonging in this subclass, many of them are good candidates for small or big scoped reworks.

No class should ever have a class rework again, the entire idea needs to die. Just look how badly the assassin and tank reworks turned out, when Riot tries to do more than one champ at once they just end up rushing out unfinished or even just bad reworks.

I'd agree to saying there's several enchanters who need work, but it should be handled as individual reworks like Rek'sai's or Shyvana's. A class rework would just destroy some or all of the champs involved like the tank or assassin reworks before it.

SweedishGunner12 votes

Was about to say this but you've summed it up. No more class updates, more small work like Rek'Sai.

HexaDecimel3 votes

I kinda like the new talon and katarina.....

Thefrostyviking4 votes

Because their reworks weren't really far fetched, small changes resulted in big improvements.

Not to discredit the guys behind it though, they did really amazing work on it, not too little or too much and they succeeded in giving their play styles a large sense of satisfaction when one does well.

But, comparing old kata to say old malz and saying that new kata is vastly superior to new malz game health wise and then stating that the guys behind malz rework were stupid for not making it as good as the kata rework?

So to conclude, in my opinion there is a severe difference in the magnitude of work needed to "fix" some champs, some like kata will be easier whilst others like malz will be far tougher.

HexaDecimel1 votes

I thought there first couple class reworks weren't great, but they started to get better as they reduced the number and focused on just a couple champs. But I do agree with you that some champs just need more. Akali really should have had her own rework and not been included in the assassin update.

SweedishGunner2 votes

But then we had the tank update which was only 3 champions and holy hell they were/are a mess.

Thefrostyviking3 votes

They wanted to remove their damage and increase the teamfight ability which turned into durability+CC for the tanks i think.

It was super effective, only way too super effective.

DeadUnborn3 votes

People over react. They just needed adjustments after release. Sejuani came mostly fine, mao had some bumps along the road but now he is settling in a good spot. Zac became super fun to play as and just needs number adjustments to ensure counter play is there. No real reason to cry and cry so much

Passive supports shouldn't exist? Then what do I play when I am drunk?

Those playstyles being boring is your opinion. Some people get great joy from making lcs outplays and getting sexy 3 man engages botlane, I get my excitement by making sure my adc gets out of that with 10 hp.

She's quite unique as she is the Aura champion

lol no, Sona is the generalist of enchanters. There's almost nothing unique about her.

Soraka extremely boring to play as

That's extremely subjective, I like playing Soraka and I'm 100% sure there are many people who like her too, and yes, there is a difference between a Soraka one trick and a first time Soraka. Just look at challengers starting with q and leveling it up for 3 ranks instead of maxing w and the reason why they do this is because they want to poke, making her not that "uninteractive/passive".

Karma needs to get out of bot lane and become the battle mage she was supposed to be, she has a lot of potential with her theme and she would be 100% wasted bot lane supporting adcs.

Janna no skill expression? Now I know even a brainless hamster can win games with her but she does have skill expression. Her Q can cancel dashes like Vi's Q if used in the right moment, and this requires good reflexes. She can engage by using her flash + ult combo and give a free kill to her adc, she has to maintain a good positioning in tf if she wants her teammates to benefit from her passive and has to decide wheter or not to shield the tank trying to make him tank more or shield her adc so the adc can make use of the bonus AD and do more damage. She doesn't need to do all these things to be effective, but don't say she has no skill expression.

I guess you don't really understand these champions (and what an actual unpopular opinion is).

Also, she doesn't use auras anymore. Her abilities are lingering actives, they fail to meet 3 of the 4 mandatory qualities to be defined as an "aura." Sona's REAL auras were removed in patch 4.13.

Please note that I did not compare them to Azir or Riven and I even said that they don't need to do all this stuff to be effective, they can be effective anyway but negating that they don't have a little bit of skill expression is just beyond ignorant.

Glory to God1 votes

Alright, I kind of messed it up there. Let me get clear.

Soraka is boring to play as.

Subjective.

Soraka is boring to play with and against

I'm confident that most people agree with me here. No one wants to skip 10~20 minutes of the game to play Last Hit Simulator. When you're picking Janna or Soraka, you're either getting your lane partner out of early game or you're not, depending on how their current numbers indicate. If Janna is meta there is absolutely no reason to play Soraka or any other shielding/healing support in general. Also, skill order doesn't really reflect anything. I can max Q first on Garen and it helps me catch up and burst squishy and mobile enemies. Does it mean that I'm a Garen One-Trick? Isn't this just game knowledge?

Sona is the generalist of supports

Almost everyone on this thread agreed with this, I could put her in the Worst Enchanters section, because she also is a number-checker whose purpose is to assure that no one will have fun playing League today with her amazingly interactive way of poking your lane opponent. Her Q also consumes nearly all of her power budget, making her ultimate one of the most lackluster ones. But it's ok, they added more numbers as your ultimate's passive so you can spam Q more often.

About Janna, you can read my edit on this thread. I know Janna does have some pretty awesome tricks, but most of the time you won't nèed them. Your lane partner doesn't want you to pick Janna because of those cool tricks. They want you to pick Janna so they can go into the Amazing World of Farming, while you, as Janna, open up Hearthstone to climb the ladder with your Priest deck, while throwing an E and a Q from time to time in case the enemy jungler was dumb enough to gank your lane. Janna doesn't have a casual 55% ish winrate because she has a small and dedicated playerbase (AurelionSol Sion ), but because when an autofilled support locks her in, the players's already playing her to almost full potential.

I do understand these champions because I've played as ane against them a lot.

About Karma, I kinda agree on that, but then again, her last E/Mantra-E nerfs forced her into a more aggressive playstyle, which she was intended to be.

Miku Hime sama2 votes

Sona's Q is the weakest damage spell of the entire support class. Its effective range is 550 units, it has the uncontested lowest base damage and its ap scaling is MEH. It consumes NONE of her power budget.

On the other hand, you are correct that her Ultimate is one of the worst in the game, but that's because her "power budget" is trapped in level 16, which ironically her winrate falls off after 40 minutes. Her winrate is also abysmal before 30 minutes. Sona is weak in the early game, mid game and super late game. She has a tiny window in the normal late game as she completes her artificial numbers (Spellblade, Echo, whatever), but immediately falls off again due to her kit's complete lack of scaling.

You would do well to put Sona in your list of Worst Enchanters. She's weak at all points of the game, shit base numbers, shit scaling numbers. Unless she cheezes with artificial damage items, which only momentarily cover for her lack of bases AND scalings and she factually performs worse with cheeze builds than ANY other support anyways. Sona is truly the weakest support in League.

A girl Supp Main5 votes

" I don't like them so nobody else does, I'm pretty sure."

I'm M7 Janna and Soraka, and they're the supports champions I enjoy playing the most. I'm always excited when my bot-lane partner picks something I can pair with them, or the enemy duo can be countered by one. I play practically any support needed, since it's my main role. However, I really like those two champions, and while I agree they could use a minor tweak and prod to 'perfect' the champion like how someone like Talon was adjusted, their thematic and place on the roster make sense and have a fanbase.

Such generalization and opinionated dismissal is the only real problem I have with the thread, and generally threads such as this.

Tribbles Foxfolk6 votes

Sona has seen a LOT of updates already and Riot just can't figure out what to do with her. The most recent one that tied free CDR onto her ult is probably her worst yet. Sona's been my main for a long time, but it's hard to stay invested when Riot is more than happy to take a cleaver to her at the drop of a hat.

Passive: Fine as it is. Power Chord is pretty well-made currently, but could use a minor up to its ratios. Just a minor one.

Q: Also fine. No changes necessary.

W: Take a buzzsaw to the numbers and start over. Bring back the Increased Per Missing %HP effectiveness. MAKE THE RATIO NOT COMPLETE GARBAGE. (25% and 30%, wtf?) This is NOT supposed to be a shield-bot ability like Janna's E, it's a heal with a shield attached. Think the Astrologian in Nocturnal Sect from FF14; that's basically Sona W. I have absolutely no clue why the heal was gutted to make the shield less crap, but it failed spectacularly since now both are pretty blech until you snag Censer + Redemption + Mikael's for +40% Heal/Shield. Even then, Nami does it vastly better.

E: Probably just needs a total rework. Power Chord needs to stay the same because that slow is super handy, but the ability itself might need a redo. Maybe it should tag X enemies per cast (kinda like Q but more targets) and slow them. Aura would be a movespeed buff.

R: To be honest, is the passive on it even necessary? It was a nice idea, I guess, but I think it was doomed from the outset to fail like this. Even after it was nerfed (and Sona subsequently rebutchered to fit this CDR in...), it still feels kinda dumb and unnecessary. At 45% CDR, Sona barely has cooldowns anyway.

Emmy Cha0s10 votes

Regarding W: The missing % should definitely NOT return. It was a flawed concept Rito recycled from Soraka. It made sense on Soraka, the passive healer. On Sona, its sole purpose was to trap power in an "ideal" scenario that was illogical both in theory AND practice. Rito intentionally placed it on her as an excuse to nerf her healing to the worst in the game & if it were to return, Meddler would do it again.

Regarding R: I feel it's necessary to further emphasize how right you are. From the very conception, trapping power in R-rank passives is an INHERENTLY counter-intuitive design for ANY support. Supports are by-definition, early game champions meant for laning power. Rito knew the fantasy of a "late-game" support is an impossible design, they intentionally gave it to Sona because of Meddler's personal hatred of Sona. It should've never made it to paper, but they made TWO entire iterations of it, both of which were clear failures, naturally. Rather than scrapping it, they emphasized it even further by trapping even MORE into even LATER levels. Supports are ALWAYS behind in level, this is common knowledge. Again, Rito KNEW they were intentionally making a failed design. They WANT Sona to fail, Meddler himself has already publicly stated multiple times that he doesn't think Sona should exist in League.

Here's what I'd like to see for Sona, double down on her powerchord/music theme at the cost of her aura's. She already lost her aura's with her first rework anyway, I see no point in clinging to the joke she has now.

My ideal Sona rework would be something like

Passive: Powerchord Sona's first attack after casting 3 spells deals bonus magic damage and gains an additional effect based on the spells she cast, effects stack with eachother, for example 2Qs and 1W give you the effects for 1Q, 2Qs and 1W. Magic damage: Unchanged from live, maybe slightly reduced base. 1 Q: Deals 20% bonus damage 2 Qs: Deals damage and applies effect in a 250 radius AoE 3 Qs: Deals 30% increased damage on all effects on the AA (multiplicative with 1Q) 1 W: Enemy deals 20% reduced damage for 3 seconds 2 Ws: Enemy deals an additional 25% reduced damage (45% total) for 3 seconds 3 Ws: Enemy is debuffed causing their first instance of damage to miss 1 E: Slows enemy for 30% for 2 seconds 2 Es: Slows enemy for an additional 20% (50% total) and grounds them for 2 seconds 3 Es: Roots the enemy for 1 second before decaying to the E2 effect

Q:Hymn of Valour Sona fires a bolt of energy in a line dealing damage to the first unit it hits and other units within a small AoE. Damage: 70/120/170/220/270+(70% AP) Range: 800 AoE 250 units CD: 8/7.5/7/6.5/6 seconds Mana Cost: 40/45/50/55/60 mana

W: Aria of Perseverance Sona shields herself and a target allied unit tethering herself to them for a short duration. If either shield remains unbroken she additionally heals both herself and her ally. The shield will immediately break if Sona and her ally leave the tether range. Shield value: 50/80/110/140/170+(35% AP) Heal value: 60/100/140/180/220+(45% AP) Tether range: 650 Spell range: 600 Shield duration: 2.5 seconds CD: 8/7.5/7/6.5/6 seconds Mana Cost: 60/65/70/75/80

E: Sona grants herself and any nearby allies bonus MS and knocks any enemies directly ontop of her a short distance back, if she knocks back at least on enemy champion she gains 50% increased movement speed personally MS granted: 6/7/8/9/10%+(5% per 100 AP) Radius: 500 Duration: 3 seconds Knockback range: 150 units, all units knocked to edge of 150 unit range regardless of start point CD: 8/7.5/7/6.5/6 seconds Mana Cost 40/45/50/55/60

R: Passive: removed, active: same as live.

Basically this would add some element of skill and decision making to Sona while keeping her kit fairly simple to learn. The effects have different use cases but scale up quite simply and logically.

AWildAPKalista5 votes

Sona's Ultimate is one of the weakest amongst supports, it can't be left as-is. At the very least, it needs its hitbox reverted to pre-patch 4.13. Ideally, they should make improvements; change it from a straight-line projectile into a cone for example. Sound doesn't travel in a fucking straight line.

I did, every time in season 4 when I was in the promos I was: what a great day/time to play Janna! Yes, Janna is that amazing. And that is because she can protect someone very well. So, is your adc retarded? is your midlaner useless? np, as long as you got a single team mate you can protect, then, your janna is effective. I'd have to heavily disagree on your points with Soraka. You're being very biased in your opinion, instead of looking at Soraka as a whole. I absolutely love playing as her, and I wont deny it's pretty frustrating to play against her but it's not impossible either. There is a big difference between a Soraka one trick and a Soraka beginner. Soraka beginners like to throw their Starcall and Equinox out for harass. Experienced Soraka players will try to combo the two to trap their enemies. There's more to Soraka than just spamming W.

Also, not every champion needs to be dynamically expressive and skillful. You'd alienate a lot of players if every champion required some degree of skill.

I 100% agree with the Sona rework. I love my sona, but outside of her Ult she doesn't really do anything. She has some poke, but so do other champions. Her heals are kinda bad, but the shield off-sets some of that. Her E is more used to running back to lane, then to actually chase. Her Q is great, but some times the target is weird. I could be standing next to 2 enemy champions, but they would target minions instead. Her passive is worthless, how many of us Actually use the empowered W,E on purpose? When the Empowered Q does so much damage. Her ult idk how you could work that maybe work that into her passive of Q + R = higher group damage aura, W + R = Either bigger full heal to everyone within range or increase health regen, E+R= movement speed increase.

Her entire theme is giving aura's to people, but her Ultimate doesn't make sense in that theme.

AWildAPKalista2 votes

A decent analysis if I do say so myself.

I'ma help you understand a little: the targeting priority on Hymn of Valor only prioritizes enemy champions if they are within 550 units. They made this change to it back in season 3 I believe, to match her basic attack range. Before then, its champion prioritization was even lower, like 500 units if I recall correctly.

It's also worth nothing that because of this, Sona practically has the shortest range of any support in League.

I think u are a bit too biased when you talk about janna , she has a skill cap compared to soraka . Janna skilled things is all about timing Q and R to cancel dash very well or isolate a target ( while he is bumped with Q and you R the others , if u isolate a squishy u won the team fight alone ) . Even tho its probably her only skilled tricks , she has a at least a more than 0 ( hi soraka ) .

Class reworks are garbage. The Tank rework didn't really solve any problems if not cause more. Look at Zac and Sej for instance Sej was hotfixed nerfed almost immediately and got another one to the point she is basically in a worse spot than before. Zac didn't even need to be looked at and we got a monstrosity anyway. The Mage rework didn't do much of any good. The Assassin rework was a joke. All they did was make Talon play cooler and gave Kat higher skill floor. These updates don't do much good compared to the rest they bring. Riot Just needs to do single champ reworks. They are much more successful and less of a clusterfuck of issues to deal with.
