I feel like the general champion power has gone up way too high

...and it excuses the player to misuse the tools they work with. I feel like you don't need to be as careful as you were before.

For instance, compare any old champion to their former S4-ish self. Vayne got buffed, Jinx got VERY buffed, (old) Nunu and Singed got completely new mechanics added to their kits.

Why? So old champions can compete with modern ones. Look at Kai'Sa. If Lucian was considered a generalist adc in the past, Kai'Sa is universal. She's literally a Corki Kog'maw Vayne with a shield and a huge-range attack. Pyie is legitimately a bettrr Blitzcrank, with more damage, huge AoE nukes, mobility and sustain, while not being too squishy.

How? A combination of systematic overhauls (items, runes, class updates) and individual buffs which were given so the weak champions could match the strong.

The worst part is that he next patch will include 12+ buffs, with no meta champ nerfs (cough Graves), so things don't seem to change anytime soon.

Enough buff the weak, it's time for some nerf the strong.

Graves is immune to nerfs, theres someone on the balance team who abuses only him in ranked definitely like many others. If he hasn't received a hard nerf through 2 patches then he never will.

When you give so much power to champs, other areas of the game become less relevant. Turrets become weaker as champions gain new ways to ignore or destroy it, jungle objectives become weaker as champion damage and snowball increases, vision becomes more irrelevant as Riot reduces ward capability and lock it behind quests - as well introducing items made to kill wards easier -. Really, it's mistake creating mistake.

The reason that champ power is so high is that you can no longer counter build runes in champion select to have a better build against certain enemy teams.

Riot changed the game to be more focused on picking op champions instead of being able to adapt individual champions to their enemies when they removed the old rune system.

I had 10+ rune pages i'd swap between depending on my role and enemy team makeup.

The new rune system is just masteries reforged and runes are gone.

I just feel like new champions allow you to make mistakes and not be punished

Your point is too vague to prove or disprove. But we can look at the facts. This season, all but around 20-30 champions have been drafted in competitive play. Of the top 10 champions for each role in each lane on op.gg, only two or three have been released or majorly reworked in the past two years. Some new champions have rarely or never seen competitive play, without even being severely nerfed.

Vayne can nuke squishes and tanks Kai'Sai cannot effectively at the same time but shes definitely Corki + Kog Maw with mobility.

It's not a new champion/rework without at least 2 new dashes/leap/whatever mobility skill: Pyke, Kaisa, Zoe, Ornn, Kayn, Rakan, Camille; Akali, Aatrox, Irelia. Just nunu recently was the only one without something like that..

It's too late. They should change half of their staff or so, and they won't, in my opinion.

Also known as powercreep; due to riot's repeatedly overloading new champions, then buffing old ones instead of nerfing the new ones hard enough to be comparable. Overloaded kits should have weaker stats as an opportunity cost for being able to to plenty of things, but they pretty much stopped doing that after azir.
