I find myself banning the same champs in Hexakill as URF and 5s on SR

It's almost as if there are a subset of champs so good at everything they do that they will be picked regardless of context or setting, and these picks constantly crowd out other choices.

I realize that's the way it's always been, but why is this a reality we accept?

I figure it's pretty strange that Galio is a contested pick on so many of the alternate game modes but never gets picked in solo queue or competitive

Maybe URF. Haven't seen one in Hexakill, but with URFs lack of mana costs, I did see at least three Galios, one of which was me. I understand why people don't play him on SR. In a game where reworked and new champs have almost no gating, to play someone who has punishing mana costs and cooldowns is hard to deal with.

He was also pretty great in the poro king game mode

Or it's not that. The reason SR bans and featured gamemode bans tend to overlap is because the champions people ban because they're annoying in regular games have that annoyance factor amplified in featured game modes. People like Fizz and Zed will always be popular bans in featured gamemodes because people hate them enough in normal games and they're much harder to deal with in modes like URF. They similarly often show up in the top bans for SR because... they're annoying.

Then on top of that you've got the current coincidental overlap in SR meta and gamemode meta - for example, Master Yi is very strong right now in normal SR (which is highly unusual) and he is a classic popular ban in modes like Hexakill too, so he just happens to be a good ban in most modes right now. That's not the usual for him, however. You've got other coincidental overlap champions right now like Maokai (strong in every featured gamemode, very strong on SR right now) and Alistar, and probably more that you could bring up yourself.

I mean you flat out can't say that most of the best champions are generalist picks right now. Kindred is the top SR ban and they're not good at everything, plus they're a poor ban in featured game modes. Nidalee is the second highest SR ban and she can't do everything, plus she is terrible in pretty much every featured game mode. Ekko can do everything, Zed cannot, Taric can (but a lot of supports can), Graves almost can, Soraka can't, etc etc.

We're not in some weird meta where all of the best picks are doing literally everything you could possibly ask them to be doing. We just happen to to be in a meta where a bunch of FGM-friendly champions are strong (Zed, Yi, Maokai, Ali, etc) and we're seeing the standard "This champion is annoying as a rule, so I ban them no matter the gamemode" rule come into play. Nothing special is going on.

That's not an or. That is what I said-- or rather, these champs are annoying because of what I said. Why play any other assassin than Zed? Why play any other mage than Lux? They fit every requirement their class has, and then some, and completely crowd out alternatives. There is no need to play specialists when the generalists do their job better.
