"we're nerfing Janna because her kit guarantees she'll always be a top support." Meanwhile Thresh

I heard that Korean LCK commentator said thresh is balanced. he has offensive skills and defensive skills but he is not particularly good at both. His point was thresh is well balanced so he is very threatening when the team is leading because he can provide offensive cc and some peel for your fed carries. however, when the team is behind thresh can not do much compare to other supports because he does not have heavy aoe cc like alistar and annie, cant turn the game around like blitz, or cant protect efficiently like janna and nami.

3TWarrior1 votes

lol, there is still AD thresh though, why build tanky when you can kill everything yourself late game XD

Thresh makes LC$ Bigplays, Janna prevents them. Do the math.

Nautilus "Hue Hue Hue" They will never realize who is the acutal CC king, i will avoid the nerfs and still always be better than the wannabe tank supports. I will have massive shields, i will grab you or escape, i will close your entire team, i will knock up your entire. My basic roots you! Thresh is just seen more often.

Every time I see Naut support I wish I would've picked brand supp into him a different lane to play.

I've always preached he's broken since his release. Like, he gets so much cc, damage, utility and stats for free from his kit.

Passive grants him free armor and ability power over the duration of the game, and while you usually have to be near the souls or lantern them to get it, I've seen many times where the souls just magically travel to Thresh without him being near them. Absolutely bogus passive that grants an abundance of stats,

Death Sentence stuns you for 1.5 seconds, has a large range, and if it connects, the cooldown is reduced by 3 seconds. An amazing, powerful ability rewards the player when landing the hook is rewarding enough. It can serve as a gap closer, or as an escape, as well as compliment the rest of his kit flawlessly. Not only that, but the hitbox is very inaccurate. It's thicker than it should be, and often times, I see it snake in between huddling minions miraculously and connecting to champions. The wind-up never gives you a hint as to where he'll toss it either, as he only changes facing direction AFTER he throws the hook instead of winding up.

Lantern provides a free flash, to either close the gap or provide an ally with an escape while also providing a shield and granting vision on top of collecting souls for his passive.

Flay knocks enemies up, although for a short time, damages, slows, and grants Thresh a passive of strong auto attacks based on how many souls he has collected as well as time in between his auto attacks.

Then, there's his ult... 99% slow first break, pretty high damage for a support especially considering the free ap he gets, and slows everyone else for nearly 50% and lasts a good 5 seconds.

His kit is extremely overloaded. When I look at Bard, I think to myself... why should Death Sentence, Flay and Pandora's Box do damage? Isn't the passive on Flay good enough? He already gets a good amount of armor and ap over the course of the game. It'd be more tolerant of him if he was just this high utility, high cc machine slightly tanky support. Instead, he's this high utility, high damage, high cc machine that functions as a tank.

Passive grants him free armor

Except he doesn't obtain "natural" armor per level. It also decays in how much armor and ap he gets drastically the more souls he gets. So it's a necessary evil if you will. I don't think thresh is broken because it's very easy to be a "bad" thresh.

AKA he still requires some skill, yes it's possible to snake through minions but it's usually a very calculated decision and should it miss he has very little pressure for 10ish seconds.

They removed the decay of his 'more souls = less armor/ap' like 3-4 patches after his release. It's .75 flat at all times. And yeah, he does require skill no doubt. But that doesn't mean he should have more strengths and very few, if any, weaknesses. The fact you can't break his lantern is dumb as it is.

Greenheath1 votes

Id like to say in regards to out of range souls travelling to him anyways: they dont add to his passive. Yes they float over to him but it does nothing.

Also, him not facing where he casts q is intentional, the designer did it on purpose. It has a longer cast time (compared to other cc skillshots) in exchange.

Silence and hard cc stops people grabbing his lantern, not to mention simply making a clusterfk on it so they cant click it.

Teachan1 votes

Or putting a ward on the lantern. :^) And I stand corrected on the scaling, can't win them all.

Partholonian8 votes

OMG, a support who can actually peel! I can't go in 1v2, get a free kill and get out guaranteed! Riot nerf!!

Drukyul7 votes

I'm amazed that he hasn't seen meaningful nerfs since his release.

Zirzon19 votes

Except that he has? He used to deal some pretty great damage! I loved playing "Thresh, the hidden ADC"

Drukyul1 votes

What nerfs hurt his ADC ability? His base AS went from 1 to 3% per level. Range lowered by 25? Not meaningful.

AbodyHUN6666 votes

Yeah, and his ult got nerfed, his hook got a long ass CD if you miss it. Aside from being good at everything (Lee Syndrome) he isn't overpowered at all.

ElJanitorFrank2 votes

Just making sure...you know that's not what Lee Syndrome is, right? Lee Syndrome is always going in on a Q, no matter what.

Which, as it happens, Thresh can utilize.

AbodyHUN6662 votes

I actually heard Lee Syndrome used in another way, and I meant that, he is a champion who can be picked in almost any teamcomp and be equally useful because of his kit's versitality. They can be sitting on 50% winrate, or even lower, yet people will complain about them because they are the ones they meet every game.

Drukyul1 votes

I was specifically talking about his ADC ability, and neither of those have anything to do with it.

3TWarrior1 votes

he still does up to 200% bonus AD in magic damage + souls per hit. max crit he can do 3k damage, though i'm not sure if riot changed these values or not...their site is never up to date

Azteryz8 votes

you need to do research my friend before saying that a few of his many nerfs are : ult double wall hit dmg nerf, e passive nerf, shield nerf shield can only shield 1 person as opposed to any who is near it :P

Drukyul1 votes

Please list the e passive nerf, I'm not seeing it.

qetzel5 votes

I believe it starts charging when the attack hits rather than when the attack is cast:

"Passive basic attack "wind up" damage now only grows when Thresh's basic attack cooldown completes."

A modest nerf that affected his all ins and extended trades.

The nerf to his range could also be considered an E nerf

Partholonian4 votes

The range nerf is a pretty big deal IMO: since he is so squishy in early laning before he collects a bunch of souls and buys some tank items, making it more dangerous for him to try to land passive-E harass really matters.

Drukyul1 votes

"Passive basic attack "wind up" damage now only grows when Thresh's basic attack cooldown completes."

This is nowhere near a meaningful nerf.

As an ADC main I love a good Thresh as my supp.

Rather than nerfing him, realise more supports who can have such a great overall effect on the outcome of the game

You want to rework the entire current support roster to be as powerful as Thresh rather than bringing Thresh in line?

Wait. Yes, actually. Wouldn't that be something? Making champions more powerful to achieve balance rather than just playing whack-a-mole with the nerf bat.

Wait. Yes, actually. Wouldn't that be something? Making champions more powerful to achieve balance rather than just playing whack-a-mole with the nerf bat.

But it's not just buffing, it's flat out reworking. How do you buff a champion like Soraka to do as many things as Thresh? You add like 10 things to her kit. Giving buffs to the entire support roster I don't mind, reworking them all to be several times more complex than they currently are, I'm not.

Jrud1 votes

I don't mind playing a complex champ as long as there is power in it. I'd say I even prefer the complex mechanics of champs like lee sin, anivia, zyra, and varus that actually take some practice to use their moves in the correct order and ways in order to be successful. If every champ was as easy as someone like mundo, this game would be boring.

I am 100% for giving soraka the ability to save her ADC from a thresh hook. Support champs with hooks are vastly overpowered in low tier play and wining a lane against a thresh, blitz, or nautilus is very difficult for many supports in low tiers unless you pick one of the three or morgana to counter them.

{quoted}

We have:

Sona Leona Janna

Who could all be carry supps if it wasn't for the fact that Riot deemed them overtuned and slashed their numbers.

Support should be a viable role to carry from rather than simply the ADC's early game babysitter.

Croslee6 votes

Who complains about thresh? He is Riot's masterpiece, the most beautifully designed/creative/balanced champion there is

BoyManDog335 votes

Came by just to down vote. You obviously are leaving out a ton of shit that was more annoying. The Lee Sin era of jungling for 3 years, The Zed era of assassins for 2.5 years, The Mundo/Shyv/Trundle trifecta top in a speed up comp where you can't run away from them at the beginning of season 4. Those are all easily more annoying than Thresh. Maybe if you don't like what thresh can do against melee champs, pick ranged champs? I don't know or just complain impotently on the forums. Your choice :^)

So what is the correct amount of CC?

IF I GO NEAR THE ADC SHE GETS LANTERNED 3 MILES AWAY.

So in your games, Thresh is always 3 miles away from any action, with the ADC leading way in front by themselves?

if i go near the fucking thresh he hooks then flays and gains retarded distance.

I don't think "retarded" is a legitimate measurement of distance. Still, how many units is "retarded" distance? It's shorter range than Vakyrie and Rocket jump, that's for sure.

who the fuck thinks this is fun for a melee to go against.

Thresh players, I would imagine.

Pæan2 votes

He is a ruthless shadow isles warden that tortured people with his hook and chains.... but adc in trouble? no worries bro grab my lantern friend! i got your back! Doesnt really make sense to me.

Transgressor2 votes

Eccept he uses his lantern to absorb and manipulate souls, which falls under his thematic.

Collecting souls is cool. I don't get why Thresh would be interested in bailing someone out though, it's not as if the person who takes his lantern loses anything.

Transgressor2 votes

Every champion in this game, be it male, female, thing or creature has sentience, thus arguably a soul, so Thresh is manipulating their essense, not "bailing them out" per se.

jjookkeerr2 votes

best feeling ever is face thresh and leona as an imobile adc

Transgressor3 votes

"Imobile" adcs have the range to compensate, which leads to the question why are you even in range to get gibbed by them in the first place. You're telling me you have trouble csing and trading with Caitlyn? Especialy when you have your own support to back you up?!

SexyTaylorSwift2 votes

He is level 10. There is actually a really good chance that he has trouble csing and trading with Caitlyn lol. Not saying you're wrong, but realize your audience xD.

AbstracT Theory2 votes

you need to evaluate the scenario according to hit kit... adc is kiting backwards? get the tank to engage then go in from behind. There is always something you can do, even if it is just dodging a hook or predicting a flay. He isnt that hard.

Scarlet Firefly2 votes

The boards are teeming with people complaining about Ekko, Katarina, Riven and what have you, but there's always that guy who finds the littlest thing to complain about.

Drunk Rummate2 votes

You know what's really annoying is all the people who are "forced" to support that just auto pick thresh because he's "good" and then they have no idea how to play him properly

just play annie or janna people. seriously don't play thresh if you dont play a lot of support.

iainB852 votes

I think he hasn't been nerfed much because how do you nerf him? Changing numbers won't do a whole lot... his kit is just too overloaded.

Old Man Teeto2 votes

Thresh is everything a support can bring except Sustain.

-- Strong laning, can fight and contest in the lane early. -- Significant 2v2 damage, allowing for burst kills -- Safe CC with offensive and defensive potential. Unlike a Leona, Blitz, or Naut who are more offensive, or a Janna who is more defensive, Thresh can easily and reliably use his stuff for either. -- Unique Utility: Lantern. This one ability throws Thresh miles above most potential supports. Allow you to rescue people in poor positions who would otherwise die.

Thresh has become the "Gold" standard for supports. Everyone who supports can play Thresh. The champion has almost non-existent drawbacks.

SoMNia1 votes

Don't forget Dark Passage/Death Leap initiations that give every ADC or assassin a massive gap closer.

Honestly, though, I suck with Thresh. I main Nami.
