Rakan is too dependant on Xayah to be effective on his own

Rakan's unique bonus for being with Xayah, the increased range on his E is a big buff to Rakan that benefits him but not Xayah. Xayah's unique bonus, however, is a straight buff for Rakan without any real effects on Xayah herself (although it does scale with her damage). This leads to Xayah being very strong on her own but not really that unchanged when Rakan is near, while Rakan is really shitty on his own but very good when paired with Xayah. This leads to their interactions together being more of a "Rakan needs a Xayah to be viable," rather than a, "these two champs are fine on their own, but stronger when paired together. It ends up to the point where Xayah players feel like Rakan is not the best choice for support, and that other supports are better for her, while Rakan players literally cannot play him support without a Xayah. Here are some suggested changes to help fix their interactions together, get Rakan a little stronger, and give Xayah a little nerf since she's likely too strong right now and with these changes to Rakan she'd likely be even stronger when paired with him.

Rakan:

Passive: Rakan now only lowers the shield duration by half with every auto, but so does Xayah. Xayah and Rakan both recieve the shield bonus is Rakan is near Xayah. (Notes: This interaction gives Xayah more reasons to be with Rakan. Being with him grants her more shielding to help her stay alive in teamfights, and play the lane more aggresively or more passively. They now both contribute to the shield being lowered, and as such the amount they contribute is halved.) E: Removed the interaction with Xayah. Range normalized to be 600 or 700 units regardless of the target, although it could be changed around if needed for balance (Notes: Having a different dash range whether or not you are with Xayah causes a problem for Rakan. He has to relearn his dash range depending on who he's playing with, and possibly has to change his playstyle to fit his new range. With Xayah, Rakan can look to make more aggressive plays because of the safety net from his E, while without Xayah, Rakan has to play much more passive and his lane suffers because of it. This change is a compromise between the two as it allows Rakan to be effective by himself regardless of whether or not he's with any ADC or with Xayah, and so Rakan players don't have to change their whole playstyle depending on who they're paired with.)

Xayah:

W: Bonus attack speed nerfed at early levels, still the same at max rank. (Notes: Since Xayah now wants to auto-attack more to get more shielding, giving her more attack speed so that she can get a ton of shields early would probably be too strong. Not to mention this nerf his Xayah's solo lane as well, as she can stat-check enemies with this spell less often. She still retains her late-game power with this spell, however, since the attack-speed buff is not that great when compared to other ADC's like Tristana.)

Rakan is also good with ADC's like Jhin, Draven, Miss Fortune, and Caitlyn. And here some of the examples you can do.

Jhin When you land you W's knockup, Jhin can also follow up with his W's snare pretty easily and you can provide more C with you ult and pull them closer so they don't escape from a beautiful death. - This ADC route allow you to builld more AP for more burst to make things more effective.

Draven Draven loves going ham early on and Rakan is is pretty aggressive with his W and R initiations. While not as strong as other early supports, but he can keep an entire team in check while Draven takes each of their members out one by one with his damage. -This ADC route probably with you to mix AP and Tanky stats so you can survive a bit longer as his CC is not as great compared to others.

MissFortune Rakan's ability to peel, heal and go in makes things nice with Miss Fortune, but his ability shines more when they combine their ults as Rakan keeps them in place of Miss Fortune's ult. Allowing a good set up and punish the other team grouping up to hard. - This ADC route shines best with mostly Tank stats. So you can Ult in with a knock up and survive a bit as MF and your team lay ham on those fools.

Caitlyn is more of a simple case really, Rakan goes in when Cait has headshot ready with W for a knock up and Cait quickly procs 2 head shot procs quickly with a use of a trap during of the knock up duration and possibly a 3rd head shot if Cait is really good. This trade allow Cait to deal plenty of damage and Rakan and retreat just as fast during the trade with an shielding ability for a clean trade. Also a bonus proc if Rakan charms them into another trap with his ult. - The build route is bit more iffy, I personally like going for Tanky builds, but building AP for more burst is not half bad. So either can work decently imho.

While there are a few good adc picks, and there are others that can follow up with Rakan pretty well like Ezreal, Varus, etc. So Rakan is efficiently not bad without Xayah. And there are few other lane/jungle comps that can follow up more. Like for example of:

Yasuo Ult/W to get a good team knockup for Yasuo's R. Gangplank GP's R and keep the enemy team in his ult during teamfight or GP "R global ganks". Annie Group them all close and stay with a Tibber's Ult. Illaoi Get a good setup for her ult and use Rakan's ult to keep them there for some extra fun.

Rakan's W and R combo is a pretty good setup with plenty of champs in league really. It's just how you play Rakan to make the best out of him. And there are other champs that is good with Rakan too. Just practice more and you can find your own style to play with each ADC as not every player is the same really. What shines more is good communication and teamwork to turn things around, and map awareness too.

IF YOU RELY ON XAYAH YOU ARE PLAYING RAKAN WRONG STOP COMPLAINING

I don't play Rakan... I'm simply looking at their kits and their winrates, as well as anecdotal evidence from people who play both Rakan and Xayah to draw a conclusion on the champion.

UnboundHades10 votes

as someone who does play rakan he doesn't need xayah it just allows for an engage from behind your team and to play more like a moron if you do rely on the extra e range to get out you didn't engage correctly and deserve to die he has an assassin playstyle since he is so squishy and should never engage when the enemy has sight of him or when they have cc up in laning phase

Which is why i suggested the changes so players can learn how to play Rakan without being spoiled by being with a Xayah?

Sun Wu Ryuumoku3 votes

no they just need to learn to play and use their brain & hands.

That is the second time I have seen someone say Rakan is an assassin-like support. I get it, he can't use relic shield, he isn't tanky, he needs an ally for the shield benefit (aside passive) and his ap ratios are decent but I fail to understand why he is like that.

I mean, I play Thresh so I know when people are mis-positioned, I will hook them and end their lives but Rakan DIVES in, so one would think he would be tankier but he is more assassin like.... how?

Also, back to the board question, think of early game. Rakan is weaker in the laning phase without Xayah then with her: He can be much safer and deals more damage. Would you not agree with that?

Because Rakan doesn't look to stick around like the other supports. He goes in, does his thing and either blows up or gets out safely, at which point his effectiveness is drastically lowered anyway and he doesn't get to do much.

Sure, Thresh looks to just pick off an out of position target and kill him, but he's not interested in going out : He hooks someone, decides if he wants to go in, and if he does, not only does his thing, but sticks around so he can play off of the chaos he created.

As for his laning, Xayah gives him damage and an incentive to AA. Pair him with anyone else and there's no way you're sticking around in melee range in a 2v2 as you'll get kited to death and any AA you land is far from worth it. Add Xayah and now his AA are worth using. So yeah, his laning is a lot weaker without her.

Xayah is weaker too... without her lover.

No. Why would he be tankier ??? He don't act like divers class. He don't go in and stay in, he go in then go out.

When I first saw his abilities, his W is a good example of a diving ability, say like Leona and her E. It wasn't until he came out where some other clarifications came to be (I did not care for going on YouTube to see him on the PBE at the time) so I thought he was a melee champion.

Get Relic shield, be useless in the early level, get tankier, be a HP source of annoyance for the enemy bot side, and use ult to screw them up. His passive, which gives him a shield, spells tank all over him; again making seem like a diving champion. How his kit looks is different from what it is/should be played.

My point was that Thresh can choose to go in (after landing Q) whereas Rakan goes in whenever (after a reasonable misplay on the enemy side) so one would think he would be tankier.

That was all. An analysis of an ability versus the actual performance of said ability.

I think he is probably fine, just really hard to play well like Taliyah AurelionSol

I feel like both Xayah and Rakan are pretty balanced in their current kits. I dont' think their kits need any changes. Maybe just some number adjustments.

I don't get why people can't really seem to get that Riot has actually made some pretty decently designed champions here.

They so obviously work better as duo because that's what they were DESIGNED To be played like. By themselves their kits are basic af, but together they're very interesting. From the beginning they said they'd focus moreso around the both of them, but they would try to maintain them as Solo'rs as well.

Because low elo are spoiled and to want stay this way.

X & Rakan are both stronger together, but are strong enough on their own.

Tobias Brackner2 votes

Rakan on his own is not shitty at all. Stop being hyperbolic if you want to make an argument.

He is an extremely strong support on his own that happens to have a nice dmg buff when teamed up w/ Xayah.

CasterGilgamesh1 votes

as someone who now reached lvl 7 mastery and intends to main him so far i want him to be melee so he can use item 3302 i want him to have health scaling on his passive shield so even if i dont build ap on him i can get something out of it even if its just a little i also want his Dash range on E to be split 75 to 25 instead of 50 to 50 so its more fair to him but still leaves a reason to play xaya with him

No, its totaly BS.

while Rakan is really shitty on his own

There are already certain champs that synnergize well or not. According to champion.gg -- which I know is inaccurate, but I don't know what other site offers this data -- Lucian has a 48.18% winrate.

| Champion| || | Winrate overall ||||| Winrate with Lucian | |-|-|-|- | Soraka |||| 51.51% ||||| 48.96% | | Leona |||| 50.47% ||||| 49.62% | | Veigar |||| 47.72% ||||| 49.10% |

  • Raka's winrate is better than Leo, but Luc/Leo wins more than Luc/Raka.

  • Luc/Veigar wins more than either Lucian or Veigar overall.

  • Cait/Rakan combo is the opposite: (Rakan: 47.63%. Cait: 51.95%. Cait-Rakan: 45.93%)

My point is, just because the buffs are in Rakan's kit, isn't necessarily a problem. IF Rakan naturally synnergize well with adcs other than Xayah, while Xayah synnergized about the same with other supports, it'd be completely fine to put all the buffs in Rakan's kit and none at all in Xayah's.

I'm not claiming this is the case. Anecdotally, it seems Rakan's a little weak overall. I'm just saying, it's not inherently problematic to have the bonuses be distributed unevenly.
