Why Are Only Marksman/Support Combos Played Botlane?

The thought of it is that the support feeds the marksman kills and farm while protecting and babysitting the marksman into mid and late game because all marksmen are late game DPS carries while being weak early on.

But there are so many other different champions who could make use of the same kind of protection that a support grants you. Cassio and Azir come to mind, both Champions who need to farm up first and who become super strong in the late game.

Also, when you expect the enemy to always pick a marksman and a support, you could theoretically use a combination of a burst mage and a cc champion to counter them. Let's say something like LeBlanc and Leona, it would be a total nightmare for an enemy marksman, especially for the immobile kind we often see right now.

I'm just wondering because from my experience, the solo lanes make much more use of weaknesses and counter matchups. In top lane you can see everything from marksmen to mages to bruisers to full tanks and counter matchups are super important. I think in the midlane there is a similar variety though I don't really know much about it.

Yeah, there was Mordekaiser but that only happened because he was grossly overpowered and just has been forced down there in a very experimental way. But considering that Marksmen and Supports both have obvious weaknesses and strengths, I'm just confused as to why no one has ever tried to exploit them.

I might try one of these combs myself if some of my friends are actually willing to do that. I'm going to write about it here after I've done that.

Cassiopea and Azir shine in mid lane because of their roam potential. Saddling them in bot lane means you're wasting their potential gank power in the early to mid game.

Cass is awful at roaming, she's simply too slow on her own without any enemy champions around to trigger her additional ms bonus. Now add her rather short range to the mix and you have someone who's simply terrible at ganking people. Not to forget that her stun only works if people are LOOKING at her which won't happen if they start running.

You're far better off staying mid while farming up and taking down their mid tower(s). The only time you should leave your lane is to help with jungle objectives like drake or rift herald, but that's about it. Cassiopeia is only good at staging counter-engages but if you try to force something with her you'll simply fail most of the time. That's just not worth it.

in early 2011, melee botlane was still a thing if you picked a ranged champ mid/top like you can see in this video, ezreal top and ashe mid https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9ow828_DQE

since then, ranged poke got retarded since the introducing of caitlyn in 2011 and you can no longer be able to lane as a melee against a ranged champ.

you're not forced to do anything. Personally I think putting a marksman solo top and having a high damage, early champ bot lane with the support would probably benefit your team more. This is just my personal opinion. It could essentially be a pretty good strategy provided the marksman in question is someone with an escape and plays it safe and just simply farms up.

Yea so many farming champions would be good with a support such as Malzahar Veigar Karthus

It's a leveling thing. Simple as that.

It's a leveling thing.

Marksmen scale harder with items than with levels. Mages scale harder with levels than items.

So marksmen will go into the 2v2 lane because they can get items easier with someone (the support) protecting them and letting them farm. Mages go into the solo lane because they don't share experience with anyone and can level faster.

Since we're talking about a duo lane, the support needs to be considered as well. Substituting out the marksman is only half the job.

From what I've seen, it's all about intent and combinations. For instance, Lissandra and Brand make a decent double-mage bully lane, with either one being the "support."

Azir is one champion I've theorized could make a decent bot lane carry, due to his hyperscaling and objective control. His kit seems like it could benefit from a support setting up early kills. The only weakness I see is that he needs to get to level 3 relatively quickly, so a roaming support like Bard could let him soak up some quick solo XP at level 2 for a quick spike.

tl;dr: Like other cases of meta-breaking, intent is key. You can't just do it for shits and giggles.

nobody tries to innovate.

pro scene in korea can just keep doing the same shit because every other region in the world just copies them.

people have been constantly innovating. and riot has been shutting it down every time something other than marksman/support worked on bot lane.

even back when double bruiser kill lanes existed and were sometimes run against marksmen and supports. they were usually a gamble that either payed off by the bruisers getting kills and snowballing, or they lost just as hard. the strategy wasnt even op, but riot decided to nerf that option a couple patches later with xp and gold changes.

something like this has been happening every time you tried to play something other than marksmen on bot.

plus, the melee vs. ranged matchup got worse and skewed towards ranged champions every single season so far. it has reached a point where melees cant survive against adc/supp, and mages are too xp dependent to work in a duo lane.
