So basically you have to pick early game bullies/early game tanks to counter Riven?

kJs··5 votes·1,390 views

Or else you're going to have hell on your lane, right?

EDIT: Basically confirmed from all the posts here that you need champions that can safely bully or have tank stats early game. ty

So...are you just being salty or do you have a discussion in mind?

Left Hook Larry1 votes

Nah he's right. Riven has got to be the one of the easiest champs to do well with in the game.

Ralanr4 votes

I didn't get that from his post.

Kaelnor4 votes

Then go play Riven then and see for yourself if she is. I can tell you it's definitely otherwise when trying to master her imo. Plus champs like Fiora and the Juggernauts can give Riven an utterly hard time, which is why her ban has never went past 20% period.

You're thinking of Garen my friend.

kJs3 votes

He's talking about doing well with Riven, not mastering her. She's got a very high skillcap with her animation cancelling but below plat she isn't hard to stomp lane with IMO. I recognise I just have to counter-pick her, no other way around it if I want to farm.

Kaelnor2 votes

Lol isn't hard to stomp in lane? Who do you even play? Every Silver and Gold player I come across in norms gives me a hard time even when I play Riven or Fiora . She doesn't stomp, unless you're a champ I counter, or are just bad.

Ehh I'm done arguing that Riven is freelo, your experience is woefully lacking with her, and I can see it as clear as daylight.

Best joke na.

My go to top laners are Aatrox and MonkeyKing and every time I verse a Riven I feel like a clown trying to juggle 6 knives whilst riding a unicycle 100 feet above ground on a wire. The moment I make one misclick or go for that last creep it's all over for me during the lane phase, I can't be useful in lane anymore.

Whereas when I play Renekton or Trundle, they're typically much easier to play against a Riven, free to farm.

Ralanr1 votes

Ahh. I feel ya man, I main Pantheon top and whenever I see a Darius I tend to cringe.

All I can say is play safe and ask for a gank when you can. Top lane isn't as much an island as it used to be.

kJs1 votes

lol Wukong also gets countered by Pantheon and Darius. I feel he's at the bottom of the drain at top lane.

Ralanr1 votes

Pantheon is an early lane bully. He counters a lot of people.

Though I'm sure a well played Wukong can counter many champions. I know the clone ability is annoying.

Trundle isn't as good at bullying as Riven is, but she can't bully him and he outscales her.

Renekton is good against Riven because he can build tank early on and shrug off her burst, and burst the squishy Riven down in turn. He also can trade on her really well and has sustain.

Aatrox is super squishy early and has trouble against Riven. Wu is sort of similar, but not as bad.

You don't just need lane bullies. Malphite counters Riven and isn't particularly oppressive in lane, but he can build straight armour and still deal good damage to her as the game goes on, and is way better in team fights.

kJs2 votes

Yes, I know all of that already. Read the title again:

  • early game bullies/early game tanks.*
Sire Hippington3 votes

wouldn't call malph an earlygame tank... most tanks work well vs riven, they can get early defense so she has no real killthreat, and just scale better into teamfights. you will have to play rather passive and loose out some cs, but thats no problem on the likes of mao or nauti. You also have alot killpresure vs her in a gank, as she's really squishy and you have alot cc and good burst on thos champs.

kJs1 votes

I didn't know Malphite wasn't an early game tank, how is he not tanky or a tank early game?

Sire Hippington3 votes

usually, if you say earlygame X, you mean that X is strongest in the earlygame, and falls of later. So earlygame tank would mean a tank that is strongets early, so mostly in lane, and becomes weaker the longer the game goes. Malph is strongest midgame, and scales well into late, especially vs full ad, and has a save but weak early laneing. He usually won't bully anyone, but is hard to kill and can do well even if he looses some farm.

An example for an earlygame tank would be chogath, his early laneing is incredible powewrfull, he stays strong midgame, mostly due farm-advantage, but falls of later on.

kJs1 votes

That's not what I meat when I called malphite and earlygame tank. I meant literally that he is a tanky like a tank earlygame.

Vesarixx2 votes

Wukong and Aatrox are both countered by riven, if you counter pick yourself vs a lane bully then you kind of have to expect a hard lane.

Vesarixx4 votes

I've never really had much of an issue dealing with Riven, not really sure why there is so much QQ for this champion, if I'm playing someone who can't fight her early, then I don't fight her early, I focus on farm, and look around the map for teleport opportunities, it helps to have some sort of disengage, Gnar jump, Vlad pool, Quinn vault, etc. if she tries to go on you, use your escape, and don't get too close until the cool down is back up. Give up some CS if you need to, the same as you would vs any other top laner that has an advantage over you, not worth getting chunked for 1 caster minion.

kJs2 votes

I don't know why, maybe it's just my playstyle, but I find Riven, by far the most frustrating to play against out of all top laners, more than even Renekton. She's the most frustrating to play against IMO. I'll keep those things in mind and counter-pick her every time.

Left Hook Larry1 votes

You can't play safe against her due to her stun and shield. If she happens to get near you she will burn through your health so fast and then just E away and you can't do shit about it

Vesarixx2 votes

I think you might be missing a core concept somewhere here, I can and often do play safe vs Riven, I won lane vs a platinum Riven as Vlad in ranked 5s doing this exact thing, came out of of lane 2/1 with even CS, second plat Riven I've faced and the second one I've beaten in lane, if I as a silver player can handle a Riven 2 leagues above me and come out on top, you can do the same thing in your games if you adjust your play style accordingly.

Left Hook Larry1 votes

So because you handled someone who doesn't main Riven in a normal game ONE match that means shes fine?

Vesarixx2 votes

First thing, both games I was referring to were ranked 5s, not normals. Second, this is the second platinum Riven I have beaten in lane. Third, the first one I beat was a Riven main, Riven was the most played champion they had this season, I checked.

I get where the aggression comes from though, if a silver support main can switch to top lane part way through the season and immediately figure out how to deal with a champion that you get wrecked by that's gotta be a hit to the pride. Tell you what, I'll coach you if you want and show you how to deal with Riven.

Left Hook Larry1 votes

I would like to see this Riven's profile. Chances are that she didn't main Riven, or there were other factors like you got your lane camped.

Besides, 1 or 2 matches doesn't prove anything.

And why do you assume I got rekt by one? I play Volibear. I shit on Rivens. And not just shitty Rivens, I shit on Plat Rivens with 400+ games with her. The reason I'm so against her is because she's annoying as fuck to play against and too safe. All her dashes, shields, stuns, knockups are BS

Vesarixx2 votes

your original comment was about not being able to play safe against Riven, that's a pretty apparent "I got wrecked by this therefore it's OP" kind of statement, who cares if you can kill her in lane, this isn't league of KDA, farm up and get objectives, if you can't kill Riven then kill her team mates, not like Riven offers much protection for any of them. If you hate the champ so much just pick Quinn and ruin her day, every time she tries to engage you can just E and auto win every trade, she has to burn summoners to even have a chance at killing you if you play it well. But even if you play a champ that Riven counters, you can still win if you know what you're doing.

Left Hook Larry1 votes

Quinn is the definition if win lane lose game. She's only good in lower elos when people don't know how to deal against her top

You missed my point. A champion that does what she does shouldn't have stuns or shields in her kit

Vesarixx2 votes

People seem to do fine with her in higher Elo too, mid or top, as for your point, it doesn't seem like you had one.

Lugg3 votes

I love that the Riven mains are downvoting this because they want their freelo.

Kaelnor3 votes

I love that people like you that never play said champ consider them freelo. Go play Riven and then tell me she's freelo. I'll bet you'd get set straight with a lot of lane losses thinking you're a big shot.

Lugg3 votes

I have played her. Freelo all the way.

Kaelnor3 votes

Most of your games are Support and ADC. I HIGHLY doubt you actually play her.

Lugg5 votes

I always try to play her when she is on free week for fun in Normals or ARAM. I don't own her or play her in ranked because I want to feel like I have actually earned my win. I honestly don't see how people can play her without being ashamed. It's really not much of a challenge.

Akali is SO HOT10 votes

You're Bronze 5 with almost 400 games. I don't think you'll earn anything playing any champion tbh

deJasper363 votes

Maybe this is the reason why you cant get out of bronze 5.

kJs3 votes

Riven is freelo from Bronze to low Plat.

Kaelnor3 votes

There's people that went from Gold-Plat Carrying games with Leona and peeps that went from Bronze-Diamond like Mcbaze carrying games with Diana . Any champ is 'freelo' if you're good with them, so stop crying.

Tehlawlfirm1 votes

Riven is free elo, I have 2 account mains and this one being my 3rd i;m working up. On my first account i got to plat 2 before that account was banned. On my second account I made I played mainly riven as much as I could and shot up to plat 3 quicker then my first account playing other champions. I am now Diamond in 5v5s, Plat 2 in solo Q and gold 3 in 3vs3. So I have some room to talk, Riven is very free elo and if you are in denial about it then it's probably because you play her alot and don't want her nerfed but any good player will tell you she is very easy to carry a team with in low elo up to plat

Shonjl1 votes

She actually kinda is freelo. I bought her not too long ago and other than seeing her in lane, was still able to get insanely fed with her in multiple games.

The issue isn't so much Riven herself. Although her dash should be on a longer cooldown if its away from people. But people don't understand when to attack her, if you go in on her when her Q is up, she will outtrade anyone 1v1 period. If people just knew to go in on her after her 3rd Q, they would mostly win the lane, since she will be forced to W and dash away.

Baunjo3 votes

Actually, I down voted this because he was confused on how you are supposed to counter Riven, I both play her and am able to counter pick her and shit on her whenever I want to. Thanks for making assumptions though!

problem solved

Sire Hippington2 votes

most ranged champs can keep her at bay easily, i have no problems bullying riven as jayce or lisandra or gnar, you just have to be wary with her flash-W if she has ignite and you have no defensive summoner.

Kaelnor1 votes

Yeah but no one plays Teemo , Cassiopeia , or Quinn. PLus the Juggernauts and Fiora can perfectly shut down or make Riven sweat for even one damn kill. I made a Riven go 0-3 as Fiora beforehand and it wasn't even funny how bad Riv got beat.

Let's not forget Jax either. Man is a monster.

Vesarixx3 votes

I play Quinn, she pushes riven around pretty easily.

Sasogwa2 votes

Pantheon should beat Riven. Jax kinda gets bullied easily, though he arguably outscales her (it's still rather hard to kill her due to her insane mobility ; and I'm not even sure it's that one-sided, especially with the new BC. Nasus is a somewhat decent pick against Riven, he can rush armor and though the first levels are kinda difficult (not much more difficult than if you're playing Jax tbh), you easily, quicky outscale her in a 1v1 scenario.

Baunjo4 votes

Nasus is a TERRIBLE pick against Riven. Nasus can try to build armor assuming he doesn't die before his first back. And even then, Riven builds a lot of armor pen.

Kaelnor1 votes

The first thing every experienced Riven builds is item 3134... Your early armor isn't going to help that much, especially against a champ that doesn't scale with movement speed. Plus Riven has a Shield, knock-up, and a stun, and Nasus has one of the worst defenses against CC of any tank, and is one of the least durable all the way til mid-late.

Riven pretty much counters Nasus.

As far as Riven vs Pantheon goes... Pantheon isn't guaranteed a victory here either. He has no escape, and Riven can still outtrade him hard with her CC and hard hitting combos even with Panth's passive and W taken into consideration.

A good Jax WILL beat Riven if played properly, I lost to one in a 1v1 custom. His damage is very high and can bust Riven's shielding easily, her mobility isn't even that much a problem for him.

ProfDrDeath2 votes

Brutalizer has 10 ArPen and costs 1337 gold. 10 Armor costs 200 gold.

For the same gold that Riven gets to buy her Brutalizer with, you get to buy:

  • item 1031 + item 1028 : 1150
  • item 1029 + item 3751 : 1300
  • item 3024 + item 1028 : 1350

and this not even going into offensive options yet.
