Total Damage Dealt To Champions Is a Misleading Statistic

Best Ekko NA··31 votes·16,476 views

Damage Dealt To Champions seems to be weighed as "the golden standard" for how well a player does in a game. This really is an inaccurate way to look at exactly how strong a specific player was, and I think there should be another statistic added which factors in a players build to show "potential" strength.

I often see other players telling me I'm useless because I dealt less damage, when I'm a Jungler and didn't spend my entire first half of the game trading back and forth with enemy champions. Last game I even had 6,000 more gold and 5 items, compared to another player's 2 and a half items and they were still trying to tell me that I was useless because they did a little more damage than me [to champions]. It feels really bad to be weighted in such a manner knowing that (in that particular case) I was likely the strongest and most impactful member of my team.

At any rate, I'm not quite certain how it could be implemented, but I wish there were some type of "power rating" which gives a score on how strong you were at the end of the game. Not something that's just based purely on damage dealt, but also your items and other statistics, combined into one single rating. This would really deter those people who have inflated egos just because they did a bit more damage than someone else.

"REPORT JG ONLY 15K DAMAGE TO CHAMPIONS. I DID MOST DAMAGE TO CHAMPIONS SO HONOR ME." "But you died 11 times." "REPORT JG FOR FLAMING."

And jungle gets banned for flaming for mentioning someones score. since its 10/10 on the toxic scale.

I don't think any of the stat metrics at the end of the game are accurate

a lot of the time those stats are just a more concentrated version of KDA that doesn't tell the full story. It's like a classier way of pointing out KDA without looking like "the 12 year old that only cares about KDA to stoke their ego".

CC score for example, you can get really high by playing champs that have slows as a main part of their kit even if they aren't about cc. Dr. Mundo has 1 slow in his kit for example, but because you throw so many cleavers to do damage you end up with a high cc score even if it's only a meager 40% moveslow that most of the time doesn't have any impact (because it's being used for harass damage). By comparison you might have had that one good rakan flash+R+W that actually won a teamfight because you hit like 4 guys in it and that's a case where the cc was way more impactful. But again because of how cc score is calculated mundo looks as if he did more.

To a similar extent a lot of champs that have laning phase harass built into their kit look like they have a high damage dealt stat but a lot of the time that damage might not have even had an impact because of how the enemy can deal with it through healing/tankiness. And the inverse is also true for stats like damage taken/mitigated and damage healed/shielded. A lot of the times those stats are from un-impactful gameplay.

Death's Dance is an example of inflating damage mitigated since you then take that damage soon afterward anyway.

Yeah, I agree with you.

AlienPrimate1 votes

I recently had a game where Kai'Sa mitigated more damage than Taric because death's dance. It was like 14k mitigated on her and 13k on him.

Mogarl10 votes

Imo that wouldn't really be any healthier. You don't want to end up encouraging people to build poorly because "ma endgame stats".

I assume you're talking about the duo in your last ranked game? If so I wouldn't worry about it. Salty duos sometimes flame people, not much you can do besides grow a thicker skin, report, and move on. Play every game with the intention to win, and try to keep your confidence up, because they're going to find a reason to flame you regardless of what the end game screen says.

They already have a rating system for your overall performance.

S+, S, S-, A+, A, etc

It's based off CS, Damage, Vision Score, Gold, Kills, Assists, Deaths, etc

This is a pretty fair argument. I came in expecting to see something else, but I agree. Junglers and supports really get shafted by post game stats. If a support goes in saves teammates and dies people say support fed bcus they have more deaths than kills... it's the same thing and yes I'd love to see more statistics to cater towards specific roles, but I also know it's a problem with the community refusing to see the obvious as well.

So you had 5 items while another player had 2 and a half? Did you not help him due to your advantage? In that case, I may agree with a term just below "useless".

As if there aren't 5 players on a team right?

Because it's easy for lanes to roam on each other, leaving theirs unguarded instead of you coming as the jungler.

The thing is, I did try to come. The problem is my team never waited for me, which is why we ultimately lost the match. Also, why nit pick one single game? The fact remains that damage isn't the only statistic that matters.. which is the entire point of what I posted. It's really irritating when people go completely blind to the point of your post just to shit talk you over things that have little relevance.

FilDaFunk3 votes

The part we are nitpicking is your entire argument. You only put that as evidence. What maked you think that people look at damage dealt to measure contribution in good circumstances? You gave one example where one person was angry at you and used the numbers to help their point.

If a game goes well, do people not notice the conribution each person on their team did? In that case, do they even look at the damage dealt for this purpose?

Oh ya its your teams fault you didnt gank. Makes sense.

Well, only bad players just look at damage dealt. There are so many other stats, like total damage dealt overall, damage to objectives / towers, gold difference compared to your laner. That said, damage dealt to champions is important as well, because some people are KDA players. Good KDA, but low damage, so they think "ugh, my team drags me down, look I have good KDAs" and all they do is ks, run away to avoid deaths.

Nausicäa 4 votes

This is a dumb suggestion and the only people who upvote this are probably bad at the game. The amount of gold and items you have is irrelevant if you didnt use them properly to help your team win.

How did you get that gold? Did you farm all game and not show up to teamfights/ gank and only get clean up kills showing up late or after your team dies? Because this is probably why your damage is low and in this case you were actually a detriment to your team and deserve the criticism. Similarly you can be a 'KDA player' and have the best KDA in the game even 0 deaths but this doesnt mean you did well and in fact could have lost the game for your team by going out of your way not to die at the expense of damage, objectives and making plays

Ultimately if you're a jungler and did half or less the enemy junglers damage you're bad and the loss is probably your fault and you deserve the criticism. Shitty junglers need to realize that if the enemy jungler ganked 15 times during laning phase and you fail ganked once and farmed all game the loss is 100% YOUR FAULT. It has nothing to do with warding, it has nothing to do with your teams lanes being pushed, you fucking suck and lost the game flat out by not applying any pressure while your lanes had to constantly deal with 2v1s or 3v2s.

Starcraft243ver1 votes

Yeah but what if you took every single objective ?

The other jungler spent his time ganking the mundo top who has 5k hp as yi : much damages output, you managed to kill him sometimes.

You spent your game ganking the 1.5k hp veigar mid as ivern, by just hitting perfect stun and letting your midlaner get the kill you did set up for him. You took the whole ennemy jungle, every single drake, herald, warding deep ...

Guess who i'd like to see more often in my games ?

How the jungle going to take every single objective when his laners are massively behind and he has no pressure on the map? Oh right hes not. If he tries to take it solo his team, ahead and easily able to kill the opposing laters can help, not to mention the fed enemy jungle. If you try to teamfight for it? GL doing that after the laners on you team got shit on by chain ganks.

Just looked at OP's game history around the same time he posted this.

The argument for it though, is that making trades and outpoking your opponent (where this number builds up from) is also part of good game play. But people should really use their brains a little when making judgements. If you're playing Caitlyn/Ez and your damage is low, you should be flamed because you have many opportunities to put small amounts (even if inconsequential) damage on the enemy and you aren't.

But all-in melees have much less opportunity to interact with the enemy champs, unless they're looking to kill them. So the only damage dealt per interaction would probably be the enemy's life bar worth of damage. And this does not happen as often as how poke champs just throw random skills every 5 seconds.

Banuvan1 votes

Only horrible players look at a single stat. I had a game where I dealt like 5-7k total to champions. We won. Why? Because I split pushed 6 towers and 2 inhibs down. I soloed all dragons including elder and a baron. The rest of the team sat mid playing ARAM. We all played a part but the team refused to leave mid for anything. What they did do though was provide pressure mid forcing 1 person to try and stop me which, on yi, wasn't going to happen at that point in the game. I got harassed the entire game for not joining them mid and afterward in champ select for being terrible based off my damage to champions. It didn't matter that I won the game while they played ARAM.

Point being people are stupid. Get used to it. Move on and play the game to the best that you can with the realization that it's all a roll of the dice anyway.

KDA, KP%, vision and objective scores are much more important but even then the don't tell the true story.

Numbers don't lie, but people lie with numbers.

Sounds like you went out of your way to avoid dying at the expense of your team and or didnt properly do your job, which is to tank and peel not hide behind your carries and run away from teamfights at 100% hp. Because there is literally no way a half decent player should have only 10k damage in a 30+ minute game. The lowest damage support in the game can achieve those numbers.

I had a game where I did about 1.5x more damage than my adc by playing aggressive as support. But also died 11 times in the process, compared to 2 deaths by my adc. Damage chart may tell me i was best player but reality is that he did most of tower damage and I fed the enemy so hard. Definitely agreed.

Beerstein1 votes

I agree, but only early game. A well played jungle player feeding himself kills and assists should be on par with anyone else for damage to champs late game. The more it goes, the smaller that lane poking really is. Champs that assassin/quick takedown opponents tend to get less though.

Meanwhile champs like Amumu get more than you'd expect as a tank simply because it's unfocused damage.

It's misleading if you don't take its context and other statistics, like anything else.

So are you going for another statistic?

"Total amount of damage dealt resulting in a kill"

Or something to that effect?

All statistics are misleading if you don't know how to interpret them, but that's not the statistic's fault.

Mig891 votes

Looking at any one role or stat and taking it as the end-all be-all for how well someone played is kinda ludicrous. As a support main who mainly plays zyra im always focused on improving my vision score and damage dealt but thats just me. A jungler could look at objective damage as a really important stat or objectives taken. If you're a split pushing champ youre gonna look at objective damage to see your effectiveness because if your team can handle the 4v5 while you freely take objectives and not fight, youre far from useless. My bottom line is stats really dont add up for shit other than personal improvement, especially when you lose. Being the best or worst on a losing team doesnt really matter because you all lost LP for not working well enough together to close out a game. The win or loss is all anyone should care about at the end of the day. Having most damage to champs doesnt mean shit if you lost but outdamaged everyone. It means you did not play well enough and damage the right things at the right time.

Superspick1 votes

It's not though - it tells you exactly what it says it tells you. Misleading, it isn't.

-Players- are the ones who ruin the use of stats like that one, and others. Players who don't look at everything else, but Rito can't fix stupid. Only those stupid people can fix their stupidity.

Like if i see Ekko rocking a 5.0 KDA, with average damage to champions done and damage taken but a ton of damage dealt to towers or a large number of towers taken, i know a LOT about how that Ekko played. Give me only one of those though and i don't know shit.

IxozieI1 votes

There are other metrics, like your score. If you go 10-0 on an assassin like Fizz you probably did less damage than your 0-2 support Brand who just randomly spams spells. You still had much higher impact.

PopcornBunni1 votes

All true, but there's something to be said when the enchanter support building full heal/shield power is doing the most damage on your team.

PhDs Nuts1 votes

They should just put a slider at the top of the post-game stats screen that filters the stats based on the time in the game. There could be 2 sliders, one starts at the beginning of the game, one starts at the end. The space between the sliders represents the amount of time being applied to the stats. You could slide the end of the filter down towards the end of lane phase and see how people warded/traded/farmed during lane. You could slide the beginning of the filter up to see how people contributed after lane phase ended. You could pinch them both in to see what happened during mid game, or during a specific objective setup/teamfight.

"[Insert flame target] didn't even dive with us wtf" "Yeah but look at the 3,000 objective damage I did while you were turret diving their Malphite and Orianna."

"Stupid jungler did no damage" "Actually I did 12k after lane phase, you did 10k. The rest of your damage was trading with Trundle and he just sustained through it all anyway"

feels tank/bruiser man. Assassins get this but much less because they can tower dive people with allies around when they get 1-3 early kills and zone the enemy out of farm. assassin junglers usually circumvent this by ganking the same lanes over and over but then complain when the lanes they didnt gank get out of hand when they been asking for help for 15+ minutes.
