The most important thing to remember in this matchup is that YOU ARE A PIRATE so it's impossible for you to lose. But just in case you're not too confident:

Masteries: At least 13 in Defense for +5 Armor, +30 Life, Reduced damage from champions, and Barrier mastery.

Summoners: Barrier/Flash

Runes: AD Red (standard), Armor Yellow (duh), ANY Blue (These can be Armor to make Riven cry harder, or Magic Resist, or even nothing at all, because you're a pirate and pirates can never die), Lifesteal Quintessences (to become even more immortal than you already were)

Start Doran's Shield/Bluepot OR Cloth/5 Bluepot

At level 1, press Q on Riven to see what she leveled up:

Broken Wings: Press Q until she's dead or backs. GG. YOU ARE A PIRATE!

Ki Burst: LOL. GG. YOU ARE A PIRATE!

Valor: Fight fire with fire. Max W. Obtain wombo combo (Shiv & IE) and press Q on their carry. GG. YOU ARE A PIRATE!

A proper pirate will not attack riven from the front, Let a minion like nasus or rumble do the heavy lifting, then come in and Parrrley her at 4 min when she is at 30% - 50% hp.

A few things counter Riven you don't see us all being schmuchs about it.

Imho Gangplank is stronger than Riven in a straight out duel from lvl. 1-5. After Riven gets her ult, things change. So far, though, I've always met Rivens who'd simply all-in me as soon as I provoked 'em (or they just all-inned spontaneously), allowing me 90 % of the times to get a kill (if not First Blood) and gain strong gold advantage.

I can't recall a Riven waiting for lvl. 6 to engage me, but I don't know what would happen then. Her combo is hard to avoid for an immobile champ like Gangplank and this would hard-zone me making my life miserable. I guess in that case only jungler intervention might help.
