I'll Admit Illaoi Isn't Brokenly Strong

Literally does not change my opinion, and evidently the community's, either. She's banned like crazy.

I hate to say this, but I just don't want Illaoi to be in my games. She just isn't fun. Let the hate commence.

i have had 0 problems with her at any point

especially in lane, she is gank fodder pre-6 and anyone with a fair amount of CC can ruin her at 6 anyway.

The problem is she's binary. Her counterplay is "Well she's easy to kite! Dodge her stuff!"

Well, if I'm a melee top, that isn't a choice, so my option is to limit interaction as much as possible. That's fun.

What if I'm ranged? In that case, Illaoi is f*cked beyond belief. Fun for her team, right?

Being forced into her minigame is also just loads of entertainment. I don't like dealing with her. In Ranked I will, obviously, but outside of that? No thanks. I play normals for fun.

Yes because melees cant beat illaoi in lane right?

All of her kit has counterplay, if somebody can't deal with that then his issue is skill.

I dislike the fact that she can be 3 kills behind even if I'm melee, yet she can still take 4/5 of my health bar in one combo while building full tank. That is OP imo. If you can play a ranged into her, she can't do anything, if you play a melee into her, you can't do anything. I also dislike that every champion has a mini game to it now, but that is somewhat beside the point.

If you're a melee top and you didn't pick someone who's dog shit early game, you can probably just step on her.

Darius Shen Renekton Trundle immediately come to mind as melees who can beat her in early trades. Any half-decent duelist will beat her into the dust, anyone who's relatively hard to push out early game and has decent base damage will beat her if they move out of the way of those winding-up tentacles.

You're basically saying "Never pick any of the champions (And there are a lot) that Illaoi has a favorable match-up against unless she's banned." Champions shouldn't warp the champion select stage that badly. Their picks should influence your choice, not decide it.

This proves my point; she's incredibly binary. Pick the right champ and she's boned. Otherwise, you're boned. This is precisely why I don't even like her on MY team. Saying "oh, it's healthy; just abuse this poor design element into your favor and it's fine" is nonsensical.

Big Lincoln10 votes

too bad, counterpicking exists and it always will.

It's common sense; you don't pick someone who is awful early game into someone who is built to either stomp you early before you can out-scale Renekton or can get a lead if they outplay you and then run away with it because they scale hard as fuck Darius Illaoi. You're not gonna pick Nasus if you want to fend off Illaoi early game and keep her from scaling.

You don't even need to pick the right champion; you just need to respect Illaoi's presence and zoning power. She is by FAR the most forgiving lane bully I've ever seen in League.

I played a game as Nasus yesterday against an illaoi. Destroyed her, I waited until she burned all her mana while setting her up for a gank. Her damage was useless when I had 200+ stacks and could out trade her.

koager3 votes

Would Singed work well against her? Was thinking that if she wants to hit your spirit then she will have to sit in your cloud of poison taking damage.

SettDownShutUp6 votes

My problem is when she performs her spirit vessel properly. If you get it, you are out of the lane for at the very least 10 seconds, on your 'spiritual journey' playing wackamole, because being anyway close to her while it's activate is a death sentence.

They need to add a reward for completing the journey, OR they really need to allow allies nearby to kill tentacles to count toward YOUR spirit journey, you can't even type out how they have to stop killing the tentacles, cause then the very same tentacles TYPEFRAG YOU.

THESuperStuntMan14 votes

My only real problem with her is that no matter how far she gets behind, she can nearly 1 v 5 just by running in, pressing R then mashing w. THAT'S frustrating. anyone else in the game who's 4-12 and walks into 3 or more people will die instantly. Illaoi will nearly kill all of them herself before dying.

Jari2 votes

And lord if she gets fed. She built tank and still did more damage than my Lucian, even with me abuse my passive and E's cooldown reduction.

Tails Doll3 votes

To be fair, I dont think Luc is in a good spot atm

Jari3 votes

My point was more that I can just spam mobility and she just hits me once and does more damage.

And he's actually in a good spot from what I've seen.

BlueTigeress1 votes

Oh yeah that's right last time I heard Lee Sin had 7 spells and is broken so of course he can beat her! no duh

Truly Prideful1 votes

Don't think you replied to the right person, but I don't think either of them is even overpowered. They both just have traits that make them very annoying to play against. I don't know about Lee Sin beating her either, I don't really play top so that's about out of my scope.

BlueTigeress1 votes

Why don't you think they are over powered because you play them? hmmmm or you just like having them on your team so you can win!

Truly Prideful1 votes

I don't play either of them and honestly I hate having Lee Sin on my team most of the time because they're are generally awful. Illaoi is whatever as a teammate, I'll have a better opinion on working with her after more time. Still doesn't change that I don't find either overpowered at all, they're just annoying to play against.

She's not brokenly strong, she's just extremely cheesy.

She's one of those counterpick to counterplay champions.

The biggest issue I have is with her E. It should not last one minute, nor be on that low of a cooldown, nor should Illoai be able to stand on top of it to block you from collecting it. That's just pure cheese.

Cenobite Azaziel7 votes

Just lost a game as kayle. 40 farm ahead, 5 kills. Nashor, guinsoo and a sheen. Couldn't deal at all with her. Lane phase is a pain in the ass. Heimer has to spam his turrets but has a limited quantity. Illaoi craps a lot of them.

Her Q width is plain wrong, hitting way off the indicator. Tentacles heal is bullshit. Her "vessel" skills punishes you way too hard. Got hit? She has ten seconds to kick the shit out of you. 30 to 45% of the damage with no drawback. Stay near the vessel to duel her? Good luck. Any AOE damage that hit you and the vessel will hurt 1,5% more (including her Q). Got away and need to go back to the base? Hell no. Tentacles will spawn near you fuc** up your recall. There is no counterplay. No illaoi range tentacle pop up or anything like that. Btw, kill THREE tentacles before you have the right to B?

Illaoi is basically a buffed darius. Q for clear/poke (and sustain), W or E for engage, and her R deals way more damage in team fights.

Because of the sustain my poke meant nothing. I really imagine how "FUN" is to lane vs her as a melee champion.

Durzaka7 votes

I literally have 0 problem with Illaoi. I have never struggled to lane against her, or fight against her in team fights.

Literally the ONLY time she has been a problem is if she gets off a big ultimate in the jungle and my team cant disperse. And in that case, she deserves to be strong.

I dont understand communities belief that she is OP.

UtilityPunk1 votes

Honestly, it depends on the matchup. With some champs, I never risk engaging her as her damage, skills, and tankiness are always going to outdo my performance. With other champs, play against her is balanced and amounts to predicting and countering her E and R. And that really seems to be what the community complains about.

Even good players have trouble against her if their champ isn't that great at shrugging off damage and sustaining high damage output. The other main counter is poking her to death with a very mobile burst mage. Warwick is one of the few champs I've seen keep up with her while taking hits.

Playing as illaoi is about timing and positioning. Release your R or E to quickly change the dynamic of the fight. R has helped me win 3v1 ganks, and E can double as a poke that causes squishy champs to disengage. Without those two abilities (when they're on cooldown), she either sacrifices damage by moving away from tentacles, or mobility by staying near them.

In some cases, she can get absurd kills. In others, her mobility and range leave her prone to ganks and pokes. What most people seem to hate is the fact that she can turn a 3v1 into a huge advantage with R; players go to great lengths to stack odds in their favor to kill her, but her kit can counter these strategies effectively. Most other champions don't have this luxury; they must disengage when the battlefield is not to their benefit.

She isn't necessarily OP. Her kit just needs a lot of coordination and some skill to counter.

FatTaco4 votes

I don't like how much control she can have in 1 lane it's worst than Teemo and Heimerdinger because she can be really tank and if you don't kite well enough or just spam on her she can turn around 2 v 1s by pressing 2 buttons. That being said I know how to best deal with her in lane it just takes time and a lot of patience, it's pretty boring to play against.

YumaS2Astral4 votes

Honestly I think that the only problem with her is how her Q hitbox is fucked up. It hits you even when it appears that it shouldn't. Once Riot fix it, Illaoi will no longer be a serious problem.

She is insanely oppressive against melee champions, but can still be countered with the right counterpick. I've found that Vladimir is her hardest counter and there is little that she can do against him, especially because she has no CC.

Ariel the Cruel1 votes

honest question: how does Vlad's troll pool interact with test of spirit? Is it considered a leash?

Vlad can pool before being hit by Test of Spirit and thus avoid being hit by it.

Cenobite Azaziel4 votes

Q range is pretty big. It's width display is incorrect. IF you stand to contest the vessel she will hit you 2x with it if she doesn't suck at skill shots.

Contesting means nothing. If you are squishy she will break the vessel with no effort. If she couldn't wreck you the 3 tentacles that spawn will hit you with little chance of counter play if you are immobile. It is pretty frustrating to deal with that effect for a 50 seconds since minions and towers don't hit it.

The problem with Illaoi is that she isn't that you either have the tools to deal with her in lane (in which case she sucks), or you don't (in which case she is probably going to stomp somebody). There doesn't seem to be a lot of middle ground.

Some champions deal with her really well, so if your top picks against her well you will probably win that lane easily. But some champs just can't deal with her kit properly, so she destroys them REALLY badly. I think that most people don't want to trust their top to pick properly, so they just ban Illaoi.

I really like her theme, but she just seems badly designed due to how binary she is in her lane matchups. Not OP by any means - she really isn't _that _ good. Just too matchup dependent.

Hedgehog Hustler2 votes

I really don't get this mentality- there aren't that many bad matchups against her considering that her damage is low early if you can dodge tentacles. The only really bad matchup I can think of is Garen or Shyvana because of their lack of CC and Garen could just sit back while he regains health. Name any top laner and they could probably beat an Illaoi if they can avoid giving her kills - Rek'Sai? Rumble? Taric??? Shaco?????

Lazypeon1003 votes

I'm not sure what people want to do to her exactly. She is strong, but what exactly do you nerf about her? This is a champion with less utility than Renekton (another lane bully) or even a darius. Renekton has a stun, and on demand heal not reliant on skill shots, and mobility. He transitions well into an off tank late game.

Darius is more similar to illaoi because he offers mostly just damage. His only form of utility is a pull, and a slow immediately after that. That is still more utility than what illaoi can bring as he can pull enemies back, or even peel his team mates.

Illaoi cannot transition into an off tank, and brings no cc to peel with, and no mobility to engage with. She has to do damage otherwise what exactly does she bring to the table O.o. One of the other posters here mentioned a possible short delay on her wall tentacles smash (W / R) which might help? Other than that, all of the nerf ideas look more like trying to gut the champion instead of puttinf her in a balanced place.

TTUPhoenix3 votes

Well, based on experiences with Mordekaiser, turn her into a bot lane carry.

Jofeyy3 votes

There's a point in every game where she becomes so strong that you cannot fight her if she gets a good ult off. You are forced to back away and engage later. That kind of zone control can force people off of barons and completely change the game. One person can do that... Isn't that kind of oppressive zone control the same kind that Azir was nerfed for???

Jaghatai2 votes

The difference is that Azir 's zoning travels with him. Illaoi struggles away from her control zones

Steelflame5 votes

This is a fairly big point a lot of people don't get. Illaoi's zone control takes upwards of 30-60 seconds to set up, and can be taken down in seconds. Her ult gives her a fixed small zone she can place anywhere, assuming she hits enemy champions, but has a cool down and once it ends, the zone fades away.

Want to make Illaoi's life hell? Keep killing her passive tentacles, anytime you see them. Never let them build up, and Illaoi loses a LOT of power. Meanwhile, if they do build up, Illaoi can even keep a backup one stored in her passive to replace one instantly after you kill it, meaning the more she has built up, the more dominance she herself builds up, as once she has her tentacle nest up they are very resistant to being removed. Recently I had a game where I, as Illaoi, managed to get a setup where 4 tentacles were sitting outside the enemy inner tower as I was doing my siege strat. The enemies literally could not come to my zone without being killed, period.

Really there are worse things. Just ban based around priority and swallow the bitter pill when someone picks a champ you hate.

That's easy to say when the vast majority of the league of legends community doesn't understand how to counter Illoai. Which is not to blame in the lower ELOs of Bronze-Gold since we're just trying to have fun and see how high we can get or where we fit in. It's best to ban anti-fun champions such as Illoai as she can literally force you out of lane at level 2 with little to no recourse due to her amazing lane sustain and the ability to carry Teleport to negate her comparative immobility and only go back , unless ganked, when Teleport is ready once again for a quick 3-5 second shopping trip.

When is ranked fun?

MAestRIO3 votes

When you're winning. Everything is fun when you're winning.

Hatless Casual2 votes

From what I can tell her entire kit minus her ult relies on her passive in some way to be useful. Is this correct?

I'm having trouble making heads or tales out of how she works since every ability has a freaking paragraph on what it does.

Scramrail2 votes

One of my biggest problems with her is the fact that theres literally nothing you can do when she lands her E on you. You can run out of its range, all the while taking damage from its transfer effect, and still end up becoming a vessel anyways, or all in on her and hope you can kill her or at least force her off of your spirit.

Plus, once you get the debuff, the VESSEL themselves have to get the killing blow on the tentacle that spawns for it to count towards removing the vessel debuff. This is something I didn't even learn until recently because it was such an insanely idiotic design I literally didn't think Riot was capable of going through with something like it.

If they changed her E so that it had some legitimate counter play, such as allowing the spirit to be reabsorbed by the champion by standing near it for a certain amount of time, and also allowed a vessels teammates to kill the tentacles it spawns by simply changing it to SPAWNING 3 tentacles, and not having the vessel KILL 3 tentacles, it would be far less overbearing of an ability.

Spoofghoul2 votes

You know that E is a big fat problem

First off your team can't help unvessel you whilst her team can help vessel you it isn't fair.

Ok now that we got hta out of the way let get on to the second part. If she lands E then you can either run like a sissyboy and still become a hentaicle vessel whilst taking damage from the transfer effect.

But then poeple yap about you can fight her. NO YOU FUCKING CAN'T !!!!!!!!!! If you fight her when she has your spirit she can land her skills on both you and the spirit giving her free double damage fuck that shit.
