People don't like the current design of malzahar so we should rework him.

Here's my idea. The goal is to basically increase his consistency, but also to make sure that some classes will have counters to him. While also making him feel more engaging to play as and against, instead of playing around his W which has no real player input and/or is extremely inconsistent to deal with.

##Summon Voidling On every fourth ability use, Malzahar summons a Voidling that that lasts for 21 seconds or until killed. If Malzahar dies, the Voidling stays behind but stops attacking. Voidlings grow in size after 7 seconds, gaining 50% bonus attack damage and 50% bonus armor. After another 7 seconds, they frenzy and gain 100% bonus attack speed.

##Call of the Void RANGE: 900 / 400 COST: 80 / 85 / 90 / 95 / 100 MANA COOLDOWN: 9 ACTIVE: After a 0.5 seconds delay, Malzahar summons two orbs at the target location perpendicular to where he is facing, dealing magic damage to all enemies caught between the orbs and Silence icon silencing them. MAGIC DAMAGE: 80 / 135 / 190 / 245 / 300 (+ 80% AP) SILENCE DURATION: 1.4 / 1.8 / 2.2 / 2.6 / 3

##Null Zone RANGE: 800 / 250 COST: 90 / 95 / 100 / 105 / 110 MANA COOLDOWN: 14 ACTIVE: Malzahar creates a zone of negative energy at the target location for 5 seconds, dealing magic damage every second to all enemies standing on it (capped at 120 against minions and monsters) TOTAL MAGIC DAMAGE: 20 / 22.5 / 25 / 27.5 / 30% (+ 5% per 100 AP) of target's maximum health

##Malefic Visions RANGE: 650 COST: 60 / 75 / 90 / 105 / 120 MANA COOLDOWN: 15 / 13 / 11 / 9 / 7 ACTIVE: Malzahar infects the target enemy's mind, dealing them magic damage every half second over 4 seconds. TOTAL MAGIC DAMAGE: 80 / 140 / 200 / 260 / 320 (+ 80% AP) If the target dies during this time, they pass Malefic Visions onto the closest enemy, refreshing the duration and restoring mana. MANA RESTORED: 10 / 14 / 18 / 22 / 26

##Nether Grasp RANGE: 700 COST: 100 MANA COOLDOWN: 120 / 100 / 80 ACTIVE: Malzahar Grounded icon knocks down the target enemy champion and channels for up to 2.5 seconds, Suppression icon suppressing them and dealing them magic damage every half second while the channel holds. TOTAL MAGIC DAMAGE: 250 / 400 / 550 (+ 130% AP)

##Voidling Stats 250 - 1100 (based on level) Attack damage 25 - 110 (based on level) (+ 100% bonus AD) 37.5 - 165 (based on level) (+ 150% bonus AD) (after 7 seocnds)

Attack speed 0.831 1.496 (after 14 seconds) Range 100 / 1700 Armor 30 Magic res. 50 Mov. speed 451

The base damage and scaling on the ult might be a little bit too high, but because it's single target the it made sense to give it pretty high damage. The delay on the Q should make it easier to dodge and the increase CD and silence means it's still an important skill to land. Though it's overall damage has gone down some. His voidlings don't scale with AP anymore, so i compensated that lost damage for AP malzahar onto his E, by giving it some more base damage and a small scaling buff. This new W should be a little bit more consistent than the current version, as it doesn't swing from being killed having done no damage, to summoned 10 voidlings which melt anything they come near until they time out.

#Thoughts, concerns?

Edit: Oh, and almost forgot! I think that this would also allow for a new builds involving AD, by not only taking away the inconsistency of the current voidlings' health system, but i think it would also make building AD decently viable, but also make it feel uniquely different from AP.

You'd basically have two champions bundled into the prices on one! Then if you want to meet in the middle hybrid builds combining tanky AP items like item 3116 item 3027 with tanky/damage AD items item 3146 item 3812 item 3071

What a cool champion concept.

Once they implement this version of Malz, Riot would be completely stupid to change it. Right? RIGHT?!?!

Oh :(

is the joke that old malz was just as cancer?

I think a lot of people missed that it's the same as old Malz.

No, i'm just taking a stab a the progressively minded players (and riot), that just because you move towards something which existed in the past and was forcibly changed, doesn't mean that it's not progress to go back. It just implies that the previous movement was counter predictive towards finding the ideal spot for things.

doiminat0r36001 votes

Well, it doesn't mean it is progress to go back either.

deadlychuck2 votes

Sometimes it is. We want things in our life and in the world, but that doesn't always mean we want the things in our best interest.

Experiencing the things that we think we want and then recognizing when we've made a mistake is a form of progress.

doiminat0r36002 votes

Sometimes is the key word.

We don't need to go back to the days where TF's current ult was his E or when Skarner was first released. Progress in this way is good right?

But why should a champion like malzahar (he had less than a 5% playrate in every patch until his rework) get changed back? So a small fraction can be happier with the game while the rest gets slaughtered because of how he suddenly changed?

I don't understand the issue with the progression of the game, specifically Malzahar. Eventually, a champion gets stale and Riot saw that. So when a champion gets stale, a rework/revamp is necessary. Everytime he gets a nerf, suddenly all of the boards are malz mains. Everytime he gets a buff, nobody bats an eye. The one time his playrate was huge was after his rework. Why? Because nobody knew how to play against him.

I make my statement and my position clear: Malzahar was in a perfectly good spot (pre 2 hit voidling nerf) and why everyone loves it is simply nostalgic purposes. If you're truely good at a champion, you can succeed with them regardless.

There. I said it. All you "mains" can downvote me.

Everytime he gets a buff, nobody bats an eye.

That'd be because no one has had the chance to react to malzahar buffs since the MYMU...

It's simple. Because people's reactions on the boards, aren't a reaction to the nerfs being targeted at the champion. They are reactions to being reminded of the state he's currently in.

The state of the champion has put him in a spot where designing some kind of mechanic, without redistributing his kit's power (i say this because riot has refused to do such so far), with his W which makes mid lane malzahar valid without pushing support, and jungle, malzahar to insanely high power levels is logically impossible. Bar some **extremely **convoluted method. This is because the limiting factor of the W is it's consistency. The only two positions which increase this consistency are jungle and support.

Another good portion of the community just wants the old play styles back. I say play styles, because where he now only has a single play style, AP and AD malzahar were two very different beasts, and felt satisfying to play in their own respects. People don't appreciate the two play styles being homogenized and simplified with faulty poorly thought out mechanics.

So until riot can come up with a new solution to the problem they claim to want to fix, it's better to just leave the champion in a state which you know he will not cause any problems, in this case his pre-rework state which wasn't causing any (maybe with some minor number adjustments), and will be satisfying for the players who enjoyed the champion. Rather than wasting resources on trying to balance a poorly designed kit until he's slated for another rework, we already have a fully designed kit.

If you're truely good at a champion, you can succeed with them regardless.

This is actually a curious statement that i want to address on it's own. This statement kinda implies that the two designs were similar enough that a player who had invested the time to learn and get good at pre-rework malzahar would have some desire or advantage to become proficient at the reworked version. Which it doesn't, and the people who have the desire to play the champion are a pathetically small subset of even that < 5% of the players who played malzahar.

We don't need to go back to the days where TF's current ult was his E or when Skarner was first released. Progress in this way is good right?

Yes, yes it is. Though the point is that taking a stance in the ways that riot tends to do, and sadly the current political atmosphere of much of the world atm... but that's a different topic..., is that the goal in itself is to make progress, not to find the best methods. So as a result, you end up in this state where the ends are assumed to justify the means, and despite something having a clearly negative impact, people will defend it wholeheartedly on the assumption that the better end, is impossible to obtain without slogging through the overwhelmingly negative impacts of cutting corners in an attempt to rush that end into reality. Yet we don't know the future and circumstance and faulty logic can sometime lead us astray. The point is that progress, for the sake of progress, puts you at a very high risk of investing a lot of resources into going down a path, under the assumption that the end will look the way you want it to. Put this at the end of the reply, because it's more of an opinion on the concept of "progress" than the actual game.

P.s. I went ahead and upvoted you to help offset the balance of the "All you "mains" can downvote me." :D But this upvote is tentative, as you're perception of the situation seems to be misinformed, not intentionally hostile.

I can't even give you points for trying since you just copy-pasted everything directly from the wikia.

Eh, wasn't really trying that hard. It's like 3am. If i'm not to busy tomorrow, i might make another thread when more people are on, and actually put some effort into it.

But next time i'll make sure to fill up the preview so you don't see his passive without clicking into the thread. [slayer-jinx-wink]

deadlychuck1 votes

Actually, I'll make a "champion concept" and change the theme of the champion but keep the same mechanics. Might be better b8.

Mataka Tek1 votes

This concept is reasonable.

Voidlings should be like Tibbers when the player dies, and frenzy to kill the one who finished Malzahar off for the remainder of their timer, instead of dying / disappearing.

But I do think Malzahar's Nether Grasp needs some fixes:

Nether Grasp: Same, except if interrupted (for any reason such as by CC or QSS or premature exit) then the suppress converts to a strong slow for the remainder of the ultimate.

Lastly, I think Malzahar needs some kind of bonus to scaling in order to compensate for his exceptionally squishy stats and lack of mobility, and being rooted during his ultimate.

Passive: Malzahar permanently gains 4 pts of Penetration for each kill.

Lets try not to get greedy.

But I wouldn't say no to Voidlings following people to bushes...

SweedishGunner1 votes

That passive makes me hard.

Calabok1 votes

sounds like you are trying to buff him. get out.

deadlychuck2 votes

No, this is a rework. This kit is completely different from the current kit. There might be a few of the same surface level abilities, and you can even keep most of the particle effects (less work for the art department), but most have been re-purposed to be used differently and in a different play pattern.

Which, by removing the E refresh and extending the voidling targeted hierarchy to include auto attacks, should give a range of viable play patterns instead of the one that he currently has.
