I think all you really need to look at is the number of the complaints across the boards to get a general idea.

I beg to differ. I've learned that the most (and a lot of the time, only) people who are vocal are the angry ones. It's understandable since those who are content have no reason to speak out. An unbiased thread such as this will allow us the opportunity to get an actual idea of the real opinion distribution.

Gameplay is 90% complaints, 9% Riot Circlejerk, and 1% Posting in the wrong Board. There will never be a situation where this is differen't nor has it ever been one. So no the boards aren't a good reflection of that because the people who are enjoying the game are not making complaint threads.

Isn't the poll choices: "They need improvement" and "I don't like 'em" basically the same?

Well, the idea is that the tone is different. You could say the same for any on the positive or negative side, but the intensity of opinion is what sets them apart.

The game feels pretty terrible being in a top lane meta again

at least in the top lane meta of season 5 you could actually carry against them if they weren't the best player in the game, now they're so strong you could lose lane and still hard carry against a mid jungle or adc that won their lane relatively hard.
