It's the last day of League as we know it

Kairoptra··246 votes·18,002 views

With the removal of old Runes, Masteries, IP, the level cap, among other changes, League will never be the same. While a lot of these changes are necessary and will benefit the game greatly, let's take a moment to appreciate the old systems. They carried us this far; we owe them that much. Take a minute to reminisce over all your past League experiences before the new systems are implemented so that you're ready to move on to the future.

EDIT: Well, the day has come. Let us now turn from the past and on to the future. Let us face the new frontier with a sense of wonder and curiosity. Go forth and write new legends! And I’ll see you on the Rift!

As a veteran of 7 seasons, all i can say is this: good riddance.

The old rune system is comfortable and fun to me. But in the end, it is rather unhealthy - you require massive foresight and investment to collect the «practical» runes, and i figure roughly 80% of my wins have been due to a customized rune setup rather than playing better than my opponent.

Its very unlikely i would have been able to climb even half the ranks i did without my hugely specialized rune pages, and i figure with the new rune system i will be demoting rather hard to fit into my actual skill level rather than my «boosted» fake skill granted by having a 21 armor rune page whenever i face an AD top laner.

The new runes will on one hand make the game much more fair for everyone. Sure, champions and builds will still be busted - but at the very least everyone starts on an equal level now. No more rune customization to the extremes i used to take it - 39% attack speed at level 1, for example, is a memory of the past.

Poor AS junglers. What will you do now that non-stabby stabby champions get a chance to keep up with you?

Your optimal customisation is itself, an "outplay" of sorts. It's knowledge, and you had the knowledge as to what is the best setup to draw the strengths/cover weaknesses of your champ.

That in itself is true and is something i will miss dearly. It will also quite likely cause me to drop in rank. But considering the amount of grinding you have to do to build an "off-meta" rune page, it was unfair towards a lot of the players i beat with my "superior" rune page as they did not have the same runes available to begin with.

you been a vet for 7 seasons only been a vet for 4 myself but you probley be just as high as you where the only problem i can see is us adapting to the new runes and mastieries overall

ªTeemo14 votes

Not an outplay if you just copy a rune page from the internet lol

NocturnalSheild10 votes

80% of your wins. Cmon bro.

Most customized rune pages have about a 2-3% winrate increase over the cookie cutter build.

And most of that 2-3% can be explained away by those simply being the dedicated mains of that champion.

That hidden 10% AS or something weird isnt actually that much more power.

People are vastly overestimating runes impact.

Coming from the pbe, I can tell you this much

Damage is going to be nuts and the boards will be flooded about it.

Remember the rework of kogmaw machine gun? Not as strong, but ADCs will mostly all be that. Hell, I was able to get Warwick to 6 attacks per second with his w passive.

Veigar with ultimate hat? People worried bout lux, he's the real menace. Point and click, delete squishy

Fuck I forgot he could get that. That is going to be massive for him.

Am i the only one that feels like tomorrow is just another day and regardless of the new system is going to feel like same ol same ol ? What changes a strategy game to me imo is when there's freedom to do things, this new system isn't exactly adding more freedom to the game it's more like forcing specific roles to champs and strategy so tomorrow league will still be the same game were the tower is butter, herald will take w/e tower it slams into first, and we will all run around playing the same way we do today and have since the last actual major changes to the game that were herald/dragons/baron/towers/jg. So to me... imo, tomorrow is still season 7 until they change how we win, or interact with the game not just different numbers on the same way we do damage. But again, just my own opinion. I don't fear, I just wait. When will the game have mechanics for immobile champs to catch up to the mobility creep like breaking some map terrain to run up to the LeeSin ? when will an effective split pusher be a considered strategy or threat? when will a strategic defense lead to an actual counter attack rather than "just wait till they throw ". I for sure still like the game don't get me wrong, i'm just not hyped it's just another day.

The old runes where really just an inconvenience. Now runes are available now matter you rank. However, this will loss the aspect to grind out ip to get runes. Which i would gladly trade for.[sg-ahri-2]

Now you can't even grind for champions reliably anymore. It's hit or miss if you have a champ in mind. Imagine if you wanted a 6300 champ. You level up, open a chest, and get an Ashe shard to disenchant for what... 90? You'd have to grind endlessly for more and more shards and pray you get lucky to get a 6300 one to disenchant into... 1.3k. Then either the stars align and you get the shard you want, and you get it at roughly 50% off, or you painstakingly grind even more to get the full amount of BE.

Honestly, the old system was much easier once you had the basic runes out of the way.

Helmight4 votes

Currently, I don't believe you actually need the full price of a champion in order to enchant the shard. Pretty sure turning a champion shard into a champion permanent is only a couple hundred BE, as opposed to saving up thousands of IP. The new system obviously has reduced how much BE you get from disenchanting stuff, but I don't think that the value of shards have changed.

So if you're looking to just build out your available champion pool, the new system is roughly the same. However, you ARE correct in that it's significantly harder to get a specific champion you want, especially if they're newer.

The pessimistic part of me says that Riot specifically engineered it this way to get players to buy more champions with RP, given that rune sales are going away, but that's just a tinfoil hat theory.

ModKnightsKemplar3 votes

I will take that minute, sir.

I feel as though this is going to deliver on League's promise more than any other version of League (once the dust settles). But we do owe something to that old Runes system; not only did it help a successful game for many years, but it also allowed for some truly unexpected builds. It wasn't the best for customization, but it got us this far.

Here's hoping the new runes allow for as many fun, crazy things as the old ones!

TitaniumPhoenix43 votes

i have only been around a season and a half and I already hate the old system, BRING FORTH THE CHANGE

Almighty3 votes

But that is what everyone says at the start of every pre-season.

"League is over." "League is ruined." "Riot killed League." "I quit, goodbye."

And you will all still be here for the next season.

[slayer-jinx-unamused]

When massive changes are being made all of a sudden, it takes time to get used to them. Even the pros you worship so much know this. Pre-season will be craz, like always. You will probably feel like a newbie, despite having played since 2012. It's alright. The changes are the same for everyone.

Take your time with the changes and eventually you will get used to them. Best of luck.

And this was among the last positive boards posts. This entire board has now been overrun by people who don't understand how to adapt to a new system or don't understand pre-seasons.
