The problem with support items and a suggestion.
Giving gold for something you were going to do anyway is always going to be abused.
Mind you, this isn't just the current state of affairs. Back in the day, there were gp5 support items that gave you gold for..... well literally nothing. You bought the item and got free gold. This ended up being used by other lanes because why not? They weren't expensive and weren't useless so who is going to turn down free gold?
Fast forward to today. We have support items that gave free gold, but some of it was conditional. The problem is when the free gold doesn't really impact your playstyle. When you just get free gold for doing what you normally do like bandit. Nobody is going to intentionally take a bad trade to get 6 extra gold from bandit. Being near a minion when it died wasnt exactly difficult either.
So this is the scenario that we had. You could start a Dorans item for some early stats and sell it later for a net -250 gold loss. OR you could start a support item for some early stats, easily generate 1k gold, and sell it later for a net profit of 800g+.
Here's the problem. If you make the gold generation too easy, everyone is going to take it. Why wouldn't they? Why don't we create a gold generation item that rewards roaming? It could spawn coins that give a bit of gold and XP around the map similar to Bard's chimes. Laners can't take it because they would lose too much gold and XP from lane to be worth it. This also has the added benefit of untethering support from bot lane a bit. Supports actually get to support the whole team a bit instead of being leashed. Honestly it's win-win. Supports get an item that is less likely to be used by others and get an excuse to leave bot sometimes.
