Don't take the Rift Herald buff if you are the jungler

YumaS2Astral··80 votes·7,139 views

Unless you are a MasterYi/Udyr and you plan to splitpush, you should give this buff to your top laner or even your mid laner. They are the ones who can take advantage of this buff, for obvious reasons; the minion bonus, which will only work if you actually are on a lane.

Even if you are trying to stack Devourer, you, as a jungler, cannot take advantage of the buff because you will probably spend more time in the jungle than in the lanes. Because of this, it is much better to leave this buff to your laners.

I am saying that because I've faced many junglers yesterday that didn't seem to realize that. I've tried to explain to them. Fortunately all of them understood; maybe because I am on an elo where junglers are experienced and will listen if I try to explain to them, even though I am not an experienced jungler myself. However, I wonder how people in low elo will deal with situations in which they have to explain this to their junglers.

From my experience you're supposed to give the Rift Herald to the enemy top laner, and donate 2 kills in the pit for spice, so he can shove your turret in at 6 minutes (sample size twice in 2 games).

Don't forget them minions!

Kills aren't required to stack devouer. Mids would never get a blue if that was the case.

Honestly the buff is just fine on junglers too. You can say the minion buff is used by the laner, but we can also say the move-speed (and potentially damage) is better used on a jungler.

Auto-pushing lanes is not always what a top laner wants, either. Whereas a jungler can pick the buff up, get off a successful gank and then melt down a tower where the team needs it.

Let's not start this "Fucking jungler give me blue" shit all over again please

This happened to me yesterday. Was playing Jax top vs Tryndamere (fuck preseason) I was really far behind, and the jungler stole it. Even after asking him for it and even after saying that I needed it.

sigh Please read the patch notes people!

This is definitely wrong especially in a 5s setting.

  1. This buff is actively detrimental if you give it to the laner. It makes last hitting horribly hard.
  2. Shoving solo with this buff may as well be a big sticker screaming "I want to get ganked and die".
  3. In a 5s setting where you shove together it goes to the adc for shoving down towers.
  4. The minions still die easily. They don't actually push except against tanks. It's better on a jungler who can spead the love to other lanes and snowball them win increased damage.

  1. is imo only the case if you're on a heavy gank-centric jungler who's helping very passive laners. That's a very specific scenario, though.
Florn1 votes

The point is to create a choice for the enemy jungler, either they go top and gank the guy pushed up to tower or they go to dragon and basically give up top tower. Giving the buff to your top creates a situation where you will always get an objective. And in most cases you will end up getting both top tower and dragon(especially with a shen top, ult to dragon to back top to push ftw)

this buff is during the first 20 minutes and it's not good actually. As a laner pre 20 min you don't want to shove lane as it exposes you to ganks, unless you have really good warding presence and your jungler is not far. I actually would rather not get the buff as a laner.

Viagrasaurusrex2 votes

I feel it really depends on who you are playing... Obviously pushing is worse on some champions than others.

Also towards the second time the buff comes around its mid game and is slightly better on most top laners.

its still basically a free exp/gold bonus after you kill your lane mate or push them out of lane.

Quinn loves this buff. Force lane in. Gank another lane and chunk their turret, then return and use the last of it to reset your own lane.

Viagrasaurusrex1 votes

The mobility seems much better than the execute, quinn also seems like she loves that 12% MS increase in brush/river.

I haven't dabbled in top lane much(just getting back into lol this season) But quinn is good times vs tryn and nasus.

Ariel the Cruel1 votes

She used to be better VS them. Only advantage she has now in lane (over before) is the reduced passive cooldown (rush crit), and she can quad-proc her passive instead of triple proc.

I'm not going to say she's worse. But she's very different.

quinn also seems like she loves that 12% MS increase in brush/river.

She does. But it's not 12%. It's just 12.

Viagrasaurusrex1 votes

My bad, thanks for the correction though.

How do you quad proc it now? I knew how to triple proc before, but whats the key pattern/Technic to quad proc? Sorry for all the questions just haven't played her yet since the change.

*thanks for the info though!

Axis the Dragon2 votes

Get in range -> Passive Proc -> E -> Proc -> Q -> Proc -> Passive CD should reset by now, Proc (since the refresh rate is faster than before)

Even if you miss the first one, you can always use Q on a low health minion near your target, since it halved Q's CD, you might have it up twice in a combo

Ariel the Cruel1 votes

Same as before. You just need Crit to make it work. Wait out the first proc until just before the passive refreshes. Passive -> AA -> passive -> AA -> Vault -> AA -> Assault -> AA.

Personally, I'm not a fan of almost forcing Quinn to build Crit like they are. But it does give her decent mileage if she decide to rush Shiv instead of a damage item.

iamthegoatofwar1 votes

uh get in range for assault 1st, if you vault and drop them low they will run.

aGentleGrabnFist1 votes

Actually games are so snow bally that taking a turret and helping another lanes just translates to fast wins right now.

Sire Hippington2 votes

sounds like bad advice imo.

the ms and increased damage can allow for some really serious gankingpressure that evt translates into a dragon, or your jungler can just group up with a lane and push the tower. If i had the choice, i'd rather have my jungler and midlaner use it to take an early midtower as it opens up the map far more for us and allows easy controll over their jungle. if they are fast, the jungler can now rotate bot and take down that tower aswell.

haveing that buff on the roaming part of your team seems way stronger for me, unless you have a really hard snowballing laner that just needs something like that to start his snowball.

I can understand you for soloQ though, as chances are that the jungler just disapears into his jungle and afk-farms for the buff duration, rather than useing it effectivly.

SoMNia2 votes

Actually, I'd say if you take the buff, no matter who you are, immediately push a lane, maybe two. But you must realize that buff does more than empower minions, and a jungler is more likely to bring that buff to more than one lane.

Ariel the Cruel1 votes

... Even if you are trying to stack Devourer, you, as a jungler,... ...However, I wonder how people in low elo will deal with situations in which they have to explain this to their junglers.

Unranked. But just finished a game where our jungler flipped shit because Harold gave only 1 stack. . . . I wonder why.

Zedex2 votes

Who's the Harold?

is he the Heralds cousin?

Ariel the Cruel3 votes

The Herald called in sick. So we ordered a temp.

Stellafreyja1 votes

I've noticed many games where they give Herald to the jungler. It makes sense though. The buff helps them clear faster and the enhanced recall lets them buy and return quicker for more ganks.

IcyPepper1 votes

Unless you don't want to push your lane, though.

If you want the buff, take it, but I've had some top laners want me to take it so they don't push their lane too hard.

Dalthine1 votes

The need to smite the big thing so the enemy doesn't steal it is hard ingrained on any jungler that's been playing for a while.

It's going to take some time to break this habit.

PapaGreg211 votes

I take it all if I'm jungling. ALL

Vincent Lucius1 votes

But... But... item 3070Lux Blue buff?

FistOfSharkiesha1 votes

Wouldn't it be better to let the jungler take it, gank your lane, have him help you take a turret, and then gank/push other lanes with it? A jungler can control it more and keep you from losing to a gank after the super minions push your lane into the enemy turret. I solo it as a jungler after pinking it because it's obvious we're doing it when my top laner leaves lane. Then you've got the enemy top jung and mid all after you.

The Fast1 votes

The point of the buff is to sit in lane and beat the shit out of your opponent and take towers, force people to come top so you can pressure other lanes, etc.

Ryuku Cruxis1 votes

Priority should go to the jungler imo. The 40 ms is huge for gank rotations and can ensure a turret against a dead or even a low opponent after a gank. The jungler can also go to whichever lane fits the critera for best use of the buff depending on the game. If top lane would be its best use, then said laner could get it, but you'll wanna be prepared to counter gank if you do this so you'd be around top anyway. Might as well give to jungler unless your planning for some nice baits top lane.

Exception is top lane hec, he wants ms buff hard, but you'll still wanna stay around top since he'll have a huge target on his head.

its hard not to sometimes. i keep taking it on accident QQ

GenghisEmo1 votes

Junlgers are taking it? Funny XD

I never take it XD/

The Yetii Rider1 votes

Honestly when I fight Rift Herald I'm doing all I can to not die to it, so whoever gets it gets it. That thing hits HARD.

Mishli1 votes

my only issue is that it's rather difficult sometimes to hand the kill to the top laner, the jungler is the one with smite and, we had issues getting the crab to face the jungler so top laner could hit the eye (focused on top laner almost 90% of the time, even when he tried to back off) and then the eye opened and jungler accidently got the kill, the 50 gold is nice, but it is rather annoying

creatureplex1 votes

Um you guys do realize it doesn't matter who kills it, the buff gets dropped, so no matter what you get gold for the assist right?

Mishli1 votes

these comments were made before they made that change, when it first came out rift herald buff went to whoever killed it... though most junglers just take the buff now anyways

Battlecast Sona1 votes

you get stacks for big camps whether you deal with killing blow or not, so you still get stacks of devourer for giving rift herald away.

Vincent Lucius1 votes

Also, if you're losing lane and need to play safe rather than push, please don't come and steal it after doing absolutely nothing... please.... I just want to take my laner's entire series of turrets like it's a game of monopoly and that buff helps a lot.

aGentleGrabnFist1 votes

Or the support, ffs

Josheheh1 votes

while generally i agree, i'm always leery to take it if I'm playing a champion who doesn't want to push, a la nautilus top, because I know I'll just autoshove and get camped.

M15TAH JAY1 votes

Just had this problem kept asking jungler to help me get herald then when we finally did he took the buff yea i was top lane he was toxic af too so that might explain why he took the buff i swear the thinking of the community with this game ranked is so toxic Why don't junglers realize just to give top lane the herald buff? ugh
