The Reason Kennen Needs Many Changes

  1. His kit doesn't fit his play style very much. His E fits his character, but not his passive. He is squishy, but his main form of basic AoE damage forces him to touch his enemies and majority of the time end up in the middle of the enemy, forcing him to buy Zhonyas if he survives the initial burst. Even if he doesn't initiate first, being that close to the enemy will most certainly make you automatically soak in a lot of skill shots and basic attacks. His Q also doesn't support his play style at all since it is a single target ability in a champion that revolves around AoE combo stunning. In the laning phase it is annoying to play against but dodgeable, and in a teamfight it is nearly worthless since it can miss and is only good for applying a Mark of the Storm to one target with no guarantee it will be who you want it to be. Also, for what it is, it's AP ratio is below average.

  2. He is the only Energy champion (excluding a Lee Sin pulling off a super play) that feels like he is directly limited by his Energy. Kennen's focus is to constantly stun his opponents through Mark of the Storm, but his entire kit is required to do this. Not only this, he has to do it over and over again. This makes him eventually feel useless in a teamfight, something only a few champions can do. His only way of replenishing energy is also very weak. It requires 2-3 ability uses to regain 25 Energy. That's usually about 1/6 of the energy you have used.

  3. His ultimate is deceivingly weak. Yes, a well timed ultimate can stun the entire team for a second and deal decent damage, but that is useless when Kennen is forced to sit still for 2.5 seconds from Zhonyas since he has to use it or be bursted down. Enemies can simply walk out of the ultimate since it can only strike each enemy one at a time during this time. Also, his ultimate is easily countered by crowd control since he has to walk up to his opponents to make proper use of it.

  4. He is forced to be balanced around two play styles. Does Kennen want to be an APC or an ADC? Nerfs to one will usually always impact the other and buffs to other will almost always buff the other play style as well. This makes him extremely hard to balance since he has to support two ways to play that are opposite of each other.

Kennen is a champion with a unique niche, but was handed the wrong cards to begin with. His Q gives no interest feel to his kit and doesn't support it. His W's active is good but it's passive portion forces him to be balanced around two different play styles. His E fits his character, but for how squishy he is, it forces him into certain items not to take advantage of what he can do but to make him playable in a teamfight since he is squishy, but has to get in close to do anything. His R is once again forcing him to buy a certain item, but is also really weak since it is easily avoidable due to the way it works of striking only one enemy at a time. So, what can be done to his kit to help?

Passive- Mark of the Storm Goals- 25 Energy is very weak. He needs either flat out more energy replenished from stunning or a new innovative way to restore energy because the current way is very weak compared to other Energy champions.

Q- Thundering Shuriken Goals- This ability needs to be reworked or removed and replaced. It doesn't fit what Kennen wants to do at all and only benefits him with a mediocre way to poke early game. It needs to be changed to support what he does, which is stun lots of enemies by combos.

W- Electrical Surge Goals- This ability's active is fine, but it's passive needs to be changed to not force Riot to balance Kennen around being both an ADC and an APC. This just limits what they can do to Kennen too hard. Personally I would prefer an APC than an ADC.

E- Lightning Rush Goals- My personal opinion is to make Kennen take % reduced damage during this time instead of bonus armor and magic resist to make him actual get the tank he needs to perform this ability.

R- Slicing Maelstrom Goals- Extend the duration on this thing. It is active for way too short of a time for how it works. Change it to around 6-9 seconds, because 3-5 is just extremely weak.

Another Thing They Could Do They could give Kennen a LOT of interaction between his abilities, kinda like how Zac is right now where he can use his E to spawn chunks to reset his W. This would make him feel like the combo ninja he is and not some hamster running around with shurikens.
