The main problem with Malzahar is that he has low range but lacks safety to compensate
Currently
is outranged (
) or have range on par with other mages (
) - And while he can outrange a few mages and assassins (
) they have their own ways to deal with Malzahar.
Malzahar has some problems, but I think that the most serious one is that he has below average range. He has other problems too, such as immobility, have to be stationary to cast a spell, and the fact that he will have to push a lane wether he wants or not.
Those would not be serious problems, as they are actually shared with other mages. However, thanks to Malzahar's lack of safety, those problems are not only compounded, but he can't take advantage of his strengths - namely his ability to push the lane and harass the enemy laner - he often needs to get close to his enemy, but his lack of mobility means that he will have to be vulnerable to a gank - Unless you know where the enemy jungler is, or if the enemy jungler has poor ganking potential (ex: pre-6
) you actually have to avoid pushing the lane, as Malzahar.
I hope that Riot someday adresses this issue, giving Malzahar higher range on his abilities, or at least some form of safety to compensate, such as a self movement speed buff (just like they did with
, but of course, less situtional). I wouldn't even mind if they had to lower Malzahar's damage potential to compensate. He already has amazing utility potential (peel/lockdown with his ult, AoE silence, % damage, pushing power) - all he needs is something that lets him take advantage of those strengths without making him take unecessary risks.
in that he is very powerful damage-wise. Unlike Fiora, however, he also has a lot of utility. However, just like Fiora, he has to take too many unecessary risks to be able to take advantage of his strengths, and he has low mobility.
