Auto-leveling up skills in-game

SnowFall··5 votes·7,919 views

I find myself losing my focus and concentration everytime I get lvl-up in the middle of team fight. Since there are champions for which my skill order always stays the same, I'd like a feature where you can set your preferred skill-order before game, so it will automatically lvl-up skills for you. You can always refuse to set it up or disable the auto-leveler in-game. Just for convenience.

I set my level up skills to the F1 F2 F3 F4 keys, a friend of mine suggested it and it has helped, it might be worse if the keyboard has the F keys a little higher than right on top of the number row

Thank you, gonna do this next time I log in.

I like the idea in general, but I am concerned about the following situation:

I normally level in a specific order, but all the sudden there's an engage and I decide I want to level something else (this mostly during lvl 1-3, or 6).

Therefore, I'd like to propose a slightly different implementation:

  • You set (as an item set) the order you anticipate leveling your skills.
  • In-game, you can manually change what you anticipate leveling next (not editing the order, just overriding it for this one level.
  • When you level up, you don't auto-level, but there's a visual indicator selecting which skill is queued to be leveled
  • Hotkey levels the selected skill (Y? ctrl-space? it has to be something quick and easy)

I think the issue is twofold:

  1. Thinking about which skill to level up takes time and can cost you initiative
  2. Repositioning your fingers takes time and can make you mess up combos

The easy-to-use hotkey takes away the first issue, and auto-leveler (or maybe, "skill level selector") fixes the 2nd issue, while still allowing you to deviate from this course if the situation calls for it.

The thing is, auto-level and auto-buy has never been for really adaptive people, it's simply yet another way to lower the barrier of entry to a game/champion. So even if you end up losing out on some situations, it's negligible since you're already probably missing out on a lot of other stuff since you're only just beginning.

Your point is comparable to not wanting locked camera implemented, because sometimes you will want to look elsewhere. At those point in times, you can either remove the auto-level, or yo ucan deal with not being able to do so.

Personally, I do like the idea of auto-buys and auto-levels since whatever lowers the barrier of entry is good from my point of view.

Ok, what if...

Every champ has a default, "recommended level order," like recommended builds.

When you level up, pressing [Ctrl-space], levels that skill.

As in my original comment, you can also provide a custom level order, like item sets.

I don't think this is that big of a barrier. New people and those who only care about speed are going to use the hotkey as soon as they level up, without thinking about which skill they want in that situation, which is fine. I guess I'm also OK with pure auto-leveling, so long as it can be disabled; I would just also like to see a "hotkey to level," because I would personally like that feature.

I like the locked screen analogy. You're right - there's no reason not to develop locked screen, so long as it can be disabled. On the other hand, it's also important to keep unlocked screen around, because it does provide another level of mastery.

Out of our analogy, I play karma support. I almost always max q. But if I'm facing a Zilean support, I max E, for obvious reasons (bomb). In this situation, autolevel works against me.

One of the reason I didn't touch on your attempt at the auto-level is that it's a great middle ground so I'm not certain where I stand about it... it solves little to no problem, but it makes every single problem much lesser. Up to now, going full-out easy-to-use like the locked camera (or auto-level) is the go-to solution. However, a majority of players would love the option to have a either a locked camera that isn't locked dead on your champion, or even better a camera that slightly moves toward action while staying on your champion (jusst like directed camera does in spectator).

I feel like both paths are perfectly justifiable and have different pros and cons. At that point it's a lot of trial and error that gives the right answer.

P.s. There is a rebindable hotkey to level up skills; by default, it's Ctrl+QWER.

Hyrum Graff1 votes

Well, I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts, when you've figured out what they are :D

I know the hotkeys exist, and I use them exclusively. However, there's a frustrating number of times where I go put my first point in an ability during a fight, but I'm just. not.. fast.... enough. For example:

The other day, I was supporting as Janna. We were winning lane. at lvl 5, my adc decided to dive theirs (after we killed their support). The dive was not successful but my adc still survived with low hp. He decided to stick around, and ended up getting engaged on by the enemy adc after I missed a tornado, just as I hit lvl 6. I hit Ctrl-R, then R. Unfortunately, in the amount of time it took me to level (2 autos worth), my adc was dead.

Adding in Ctrl-space to level the pre-selected skill lets me level something in those scenarios where speed matters, while having the flexibility to make a thought-out decision when it doesn't.

Well, like I said, the idea is great, that much I can say. What I don't know is whether the middle ground is better than the extreme. At that point you either do massive field studies or trial and error to know...

trial and error

Well, if there's one thing we know Rito is good at, it's this. So...

#Autoleveling, Rito please!

Guys, the point of idea is purely auto-level, no hotkey, no need to press anything, it's for personal use. Those who would want the hotkey probably are fine with current method anyways.

Fair enough. But our discussion was still related/on-topic, I think. At least, I think it has a place here on the premise that if a rioter is coming here, they're interested in player opinions about the experience of leveling up in combat.

I want a hotkey, but I think the current method leaves something to be desired.

This right here, is a great idea. As a jungler, I find myself flustered when ganking and I level-up. I come to the lane, and a gank will go swimmingly. The enemies are caught out, CC-ed, and heavily damaged. Then, I level up. Either I have to quickly move my keys around to place my skill point, or I continue pursuing my enemies. If they get away, I beat myself up for not taking that last point into my damage ability. If I level up, my enemies could escape, then it falls on me that they got away.

Having a set skill path would be great. You could add it into the Custom Champion Builds area. You can turn it on or off in-game if you find you need to switch up your skill path.

Hopefully, Riot will consider this more as I'm sure it's been brought up prior.

I don't think it's a good idea to do that, because it means you have to react more, rather than getting an automatic instant power spike, even if it's small. It can make the difference in a fight, and you shouldn't be able to do that for free (for me, it's just a quick shift+ability, and I generally know what I'm going to level). Especially at level five, if you're about to hit 6 and you're opponent is a bit behind, you can engage before a minion dies and then automatically get your ult: this will either get youa kill or force your opponent to back off.

To that I raise the question : How important should the mechanical skills of one player be to their success in LoL? Do we want LoL to ressemble more Counter-Strike, an highly mechanical with a non negligible strategy side to it. or do we prefer it to be more like chess, where it's highly strategical, and mechanical skills amounts little to nothing?

Personaly, I love seeing MOBAs as a battlefield where you're 5 generals waging a war against 5 other generals. You direct your main force however you see fit and communicate with the other 4 to try and get the advantage and eventually the victory. Any unnecessary mechanical requirement could be removed imo and it wouldn't change anything at all. I don't consider skillshots unnecessary though, as they add a lot of fun to the game. I never heard any one say "dang, that was one hell of a wonderful skilll leveling up Sion" or "WOAH! Did yo usee how fast he leveled up that Q? A-MAZING!". Since it hinders people and brings nothing, might as well be done with it.

I think it should be equal amounts of skill and strategy, otherwise you might as well make it virtual chess with animations. You should have the strategy and be able to execute plays in equal amounts.

I have seen some plays like I described, someone leveling up their ult instantly almost instantly at 6, just as they're about to lose a fight and turn a fight they would have otherwise lost. Trust me, to level something up in the middle of a fight as quickly as I've seen, it's not easy.

SMITE has this system :o

bbbbates1 votes

I love this. However I think there would have to be some sort of in game toggle in case I was in a situation where I wanted to level a different skill.

Or have it only go to a certain level. For example, when I'm playing Thresh I always max flay first. Then, depending on how the lane went up till then I will max lantern or hook next. So I would want auto level until level 9 and then for it to turn off

Smite actually has that, and It's way more useful than I expected it to be.

So many times I've derpped out in LoL from hitting level 6 right in the middle of things happening.

If you could set up the auto-level order like custom builds that could be super useful. Guess I'll just have to change the current keybindings ATM, the F1 through F4 settup seems like a pretty good idea.

I never played Smite but it feels only natural that such a convenient feature should be present in this game too.

Having an overly complex autolevel system with options could cause as much difficulty as it prevents. Can I suggest a simple alternative?

A single button levels up the highest uncapped skill that you have. In case of a tie, the point goes according to a default skill order specific to that champion (which cannot be customized, to keep things simple) with the exception of wanting one level in the lowest priority skill after level 3.

Let's say you're playing Nasus and his built-in skill order is R > Q > W > E. Hitting the auto level key every level will result in QWQEQRQWQWRWWEEREE. If you prefer to start with Q but max E first and Q second, the only changes you have to make are selecting your skill at levels 2 and 3 and then autolevel afterward. It'd look like this: QEEWEREQEQRQQWWRWW.

In the case where you want your skills levelled in the exact reverse order, you'd only manually do levels 1, 2, 3, and 8: EWEQEREWEWEWRWWQWRWQ.

The end result is that slapping the autolevel key in a pinch would almost always level the skill you wanted even if you were following an unusual skill order. And naturally you can ignore the key entirely if you wish.

my suggestion is for those who don't want to "slap" any key

Great idea!

Dunno, I think that´s actually a great window for showing playerskill if someone manages to lvl-up and use a skill asap while trading. So removing that would feel wrong for me.

Ninde1 votes

This whole idea is useless, just set your skills to levelup on a hotkey and stop leveling up like a bronze and clicking.

noir blanc1 votes

I think creating the whole leveling sequence is complicated and unnecessary, also adds complication of overriding it. it's too much interface to see happen before other things that probably will be prioritized.

Even Better and Simpler Option I think just being able to CTRL-[QWER] to set what I want next ahead of time is good enough. So when I next level up, immediately auto up the skill, whichever of QWER has been selected. Easy for visual interface, you can just highlight the "next" one. If there is no "next one" it works as it does now, requiring a keypress or click.

We only really need to decide what happens on the next level up, and generally there is a good amount of time between levels, that gives plenty of opportunity to hit the hotkey, set what I want next (and easily change it by hitting another hotkey if you change your mind).

If you wanted to toggle off the what I want next, hit the same CTRL-combo, so if I wanted Q next, I hit CTRL-Q, if i want to just change back to deciding in the moment, hit CTRL-Q again. If instead I wanted E, hit CTRL-E.

Simple.
