Arcade World or whatever doesn't really feel like an event

Not exactly surprising when about 70% of it is behind a paywall, inculding the majority of missions.

This is not how you do an event Riot, that's just overglorified advertisement.

All about the $$$

Then they could at least be honest about it... I don#t mind Riot advertising their product like any other company would, I have a problem with them shoving it into our faces like it's some sort of big deal when in fact it is not.

You're still getting a Rift update & daily missions for....absolutely nothing.

What would you rather have, this event or nothing at all?

Mysticman8916 votes

It's possible that was the point.

Unlike the VS thing or older stuff like the bilgewater event, there was no side taking or lore implications, so it may have never really been designed as a full event with pay bonus stuff, but rather as a pay thing for those hyped about arcade with a few free things thrown in to try to get people hyped.

I don't think they've claimed that this was supposed to be comparable to the others, so I'm ok with it under the assumption that this isn't necessarily what 'events' will look like going forward. If they start doing lore events or similar where people essentially have to pay to participate on the other hand, then that's no bueno.

If you count every time we have had limited-time Hextech Crafting content as an event, we have had nine events:

EventHextech Crafting Materials (Chests Italicized)
PROJECT: DISRUPTIONAugment Caches, PROJECT: Ashe Cache, PROJECT: Ekko Cache, PROJECT: Katarina Cache, DISRUPTION Cache, Augment Cache Fragments, PROJECT Cores, Icon+Border Blueprints, Skin Blueprints
Worlds 2016Championship Chests, Championship Jewel Tokens, Championship Jewels, Icon Blueprints
SnowdownWinter Chests, Legacy Chests, Snowdown Chests, Poro King Chests, Snowdown Sweets, Poro King Chest Fragments
Lunar RevelRevel Red Envelopes, Golden Relics, Pauldron Relics, Gauntlet Relics
MSI 2017MSI Capsules
VS.Orbs of Order, Orbs of Chaos, Order Tokens, Chaos Tokens, Victor's Emblem
Omega SquadSquad Tokens
Arcade Boss WorldGood Orbs, Great Orbs, Mega Orbs, Tickets
PAX WestEpic Capsules
Star GuardianStarlight Tokens
Worlds 2017Worlds Tokens, Worlds Orbs, Worlds Legacy Orbs

If you count every time we've had Missions we have had five events:

EventMissions
VS.32 free Missions (300 Order/Chaos Tokens, Victor's Emblem, 2 Icons), 12 paid Missions (140 Order Tokens, 140 Chaos Tokens, 2 Hextech Chests, 2 Hextech Keys, 2 Gemstones + Stuff from Passes)
Kayn's Carnage2 free Missions (2 Icons)
Omega Squad6 free Missions (1 Icon, 5 Squad Tokens)
Arcade Boss World8 free Missions (200 Tickets), 26 paid Missions (360 Tickets, 2 Good Orbs, Great Orb, Mega Orb + Stuff from Pass)
The Forging1 free Mission (Icon)
Star Guardian6 free Missions (2 Icons, 8 Starlight Tokens)
Worlds 201720 free Missions (175 Tokens), 12 Paid Missions (560 Worlds Tokens + Stuff from Pass)

Either way you look at it, it is certainly one of the bigger events. It has a decent amount of Hextech Crafting materials and you can do a lot with the basic Hextech Crafting resource, Tickets. With PROJECT Cores you could only craft Icon or Skin Blueprints, with Snowdown Sweets you could only craft Icons, etc. Tickets have lots of uses, and the way to earn them is fun, as opposed to buying stuff in the Store on specific days like with Championship Jewel Tokens. There are also three different kinds of Chests. The only events that top this one in types of Chests are PROJECT: DISRUPTION and Snowdown. If you look at the event in terms if Missions, it still beats out two of the four events we've had. It isn't quite as large as VS. and a substantially higher percentage of its Missions are paid, but it is nevertheless large.

If I were to rank how big it is based on Hextech Crafting content, I would rank it third.

  1. PROJECT: DISRUPTION
  2. VS.
  3. Arcade Boss World
  4. Snowdown
  5. Worlds 2017
  6. Lunar Revel
  7. Worlds 2016
  8. PAX West
  9. MSI 2017
  10. Star Guardian
  11. Omega Squad

If I were to rank how big it is based on Missions, I would rank it second:

  1. VS.
  2. Worlds 2017
  3. Arcade Boss World
  4. Star Guardian
  5. Omega Squad
  6. Kayn's Carnage
  7. The Forging

All in all? I don't think it is as bad as you make it out to be.

I think what would be more important to some people is how many missions it took to get the top prize for each one. I was only here for the VS event and the Arcade event, and I can tell you that the arcade event felt much better than the VS event.

If you missed days in the VS event you missed 20 points, miss too much like me and you can't get the top prize without buying crates/more missions. In the Arcade event, all missions were unlocked for the whole period, and it only took those 8 missions to get the top prize and then some.

You're right. I was present for the entire VS. event so I was able to complete all my quests, but I understand how bad it would feel to miss even one day. I'm on vacation right now and I won't get back until the Arcade Boss World event is almost over, but luckily I'm not losing out on anything. Since I didn't spend on a Dungeon Pass, I'm not losing out on any daily Missions, and I can just complete my free Mission lines when I get back. I'm very happy they changed it around to be this way (free Mission lines and paid Daily Missions instead of free Daily Missions and paid Mission lines) because it lined up with my vacation. On the downside, there's less free content for the players. This event rewards up to 200 Tickets for non-paying players and VS. rewarded up to 300 Tokens.

Kayn's Carnage 2 paid Missions

Those two were free.

Oh yeah you're right, they were paid* initially then became free when Kayn went on free rotation.

They were never pay,

Hell I got both of them and kayn in the one month I never dropped a dollar on league.

You did have to buy something from the Store to get the Missions, even though it was for IP. That's why I'm hesitant about just saying free Missions. EDIT: I guess you're right, IP is free.

I've updated the original post anyhow.

Tormentula1 votes

Ironically I didn't even use IP either, I just rerolled 3 shards from random chest drops.

Either way yea, most it would cost is IP and owning the champion (which imo was pretty stupid, you're basically forced to play release kayn for this stuff).

Sraeg20131 votes

I wasn't paying attention, but one day I logged in and simply got them. I was like "Welp, time to buy Kayn. /shrug".

I can't hate on Riot for giving people free stuff, but at the same time, the OP does have a point as well. It seems to me that he had an issue with the way Riot marketed the event. They gave it a grandiose name like "World Arcade Event 2017" to hype it up but when you read the announcement page, you realize that 70% - 80% of the content is inaccessible unless you pay for it. It isn't much of an event if you can't really participate in the majority of the event without paying up a considerable amount of RP.

If they stretched out free the missions into smaller, bite sized sections (like the VS Event), that would have at least given the illusion that there were a lot of missions that were free to play for people who didn't/couldn't pay RP for the other missions. Presentation is often far more important than the content itself.

Presentation is often far more important than the content itself.

When I ranked the events, I was also considering the amount of free stuff. PROJECT: DISRUPTION gave 4 Icons, 1-2 Skins, 1-2 Loot items, and 12-14 PROJECT Cores to craft any of the following Blueprints: Ekko, Katarina, or Ashe FIRST STRIKE Icon+Border Blueprint (7 PROJECT Cores), random PROJECT Blueprint (11 PROJECT Cores), all for 3750 IP. (This came from the PROJECT: Ashe Cache, the PROJECT: Ekko Cache, the DISRUPTION Cache, and the 1-2 Augment Caches that came from them.)

Worlds gave 30 Championship Jewels to craft any of the T2 Worlds Icons (10 Championship Jewels) or T3 Worlds Icons (12 Championship Jewels) for 4500 IP. (This came from the 15 Championship Jewel Tokens available on broadcast days.) (If you paid no RP then you could only craft the T2 Worlds 2016 Icon for 10 Championship Jewels.)

Snowdown gave 16 Snowdown Sweets to craft either a Jolly Penguin Icon (6 Snowdown Sweets) or a Gingerbread Man (12 Snowdown Sweets) for 3200 IP. (Snowdown Sweets were purchaseable every weekend and could be purchased two at a time.) (There were two more craftable Icons but they were uncraftable if you only used IP.)

Lunar Revel had nothing without a RP cost. (There was a free Icon and an Icon for 1500 IP but they weren't connected to Missions or Hextech Crafting, so I'm not counting them.)

MSI had nothing without a RP cost.

VS. gave 2 Icons from a Mission, the Victor's Emblem to craft the winner's Icon from another Mission, and 300 Order or Chaos Tokens (or some combination of the two that equals 300) for completing the daily Missions. The 300 Tokens could be spent on 10 Champion Essence (10 Tokens), a Key Fragment (40 Tokens), a Hextech Mystery Champion Shard (100 Tokens), any of three Icons (with the most expensive having a border too) (80, 100, and 200 Tokens), or an Orb (140 Tokens).

Kayn's Carnage gave 2 Icons from Missions.

Omega Squad gave an Icon from a Mission, and five Squad Tokens from Missions that crafted into another Icon.

Arcade Boss World gives 200 Tickets from Missions. The Tickets can be spent on 10 Champion Essence (10 Tickets), a Key Fragment (40 Tickets), an Icon (80 Tickets), a Good Orb (80 Tickets), a Great Orb (120 Tickets), or a Mega Orb (150 Tickets).

PAX West will give nothing without RP.

When you look at the events this way, Arcade Boss World is still substantially better than most of the events in terms of free stuff.

I agree with you on this, but the point I was trying to echo is that Riot should think more carefully about how they present their future events so that they won't have to worry about backlash threads like these. Someone in another thread pretty much summed up how a lot of players felt about the Arcade event: A considerable amount of players were upset that the daily missions were locked behind a paywall, which made the event feel really underwhelming in comparison to how Riot was advertising it. If they do a better job of communicating the details of the event while not over-hyping it, then I think they'll do just fine in the future in regard to upcoming events. Only time will tell though.

People surprised or even angry that riot exists to make money blow my mind. It's a free-to-play BUSINESS MODEL, not free-to-play CHARITY FREE STUFF FOR EVERYONE

SpaghettiVase4 votes

Not only that but they released 10$ skins with it and didn't even both to put the older skins on sale. All of them are 10$ (or more for Veigar's skin) even though some of them are like 5 years old

Dream High4 votes

That's because it's not. Just another cash grab.

InstaPoppy4 votes

To be fair, you can get 200 free tickets from the missions which are pretty interesting. And they also made a new cool look for the map which they didden't have to do.

Q Ren1 votes

The map isn't cool at all, I like the sound effects of it when you level up and kill things for gold but the map itself looks bad simply because it's random arcade things in a damn forest. They could've made a full version.

DevlinCrow2 votes

And they could also give everyone 100000 RP

Enjoy what they have given us and stop moaning about what they haven't

InstaPoppy2 votes

Then you can disable it and enjoy the free goodies in a free game :)

Q Ren1 votes

Again, I'm not complaining about it and I have it disabled, I jsut said that it looks shit. Couldn't care less about some stupid map.

Funny how some people jump to protect their Riot gods when someone says that they don't like something they did.

It's called feedback.

Vallalan3 votes

i mean its just a skin hype thing. you can see that. they had the skin hype with yasuo vs riven. now its arcade. and then they will have a star guardian event right after.

riot has to make money they are business and they want to keep growing. if you don't wanna pay then don't. but don't whine either because this is a great game and its free to play. you don't have to pay a single dime to enjoy playing league of legends.

mental defisency3 votes

VS. felt like an event, because regardless of whether or not you bought anything, you could still contribute to an actual competition. In my opinion, I couldn't care less about the orbs and the loot, what really made the event truly great was the Yasuo VS Riven theme, and I hope the Star Guardian event can capture that same feeling with the new game mode. that will be a true event.

sirwaterfles3 votes

So? Be happy you get ANYTHING for free at all. Shit we get a great fun new gamemode and free skinshard, keys, otherstuff. All this in a game that is COMPLETELY free to begin with and that the ONLY thing you have to pay for is skins that do nothing more than ego/vanity boosts. You know how much keeping a game like this up costs each month? Servers, maintenance, balance, tournaments, new content, lorewriters,.. All this and the only thing they charge for is skins that are mostly highvalue upgrades and even some of those you get for free now. I think i got for about 50 euro worth of skins for absolutely free last year just for not being the biggest dick i could be while playing their game for free. All this and you still find the nerv to bitch about "moneygrab"? Really?

ModAcademy Kayn2 votes

You still got free stuff, so what's the real complaint here?

Sraeg20131 votes

Gotta love them duplicates, ayy.

The only thing I got out of this event was a single gemstone. I'm at 10% towards unlocking a mediocre skin. Fuck yeah, free stuff!

ModAcademy Kayn1 votes

It's RNG, what ya expect? But that doesn't stop the fact that you're getting a chance to get free skins, icons, or ward skins, simply by playing the game. OP is literally complaining that Riot didn't give them more free stuff.

Not exactly surprising when about 70% of it is behind a paywall, inculding the majority of missions.

Oh what a fucking surprise. Content for a free game having to be paid for. Don't want to do the missions? That's fine, but you still got a chance to get something for free.

Sraeg20131 votes

I want to be able to actually participate in events, not be forced to pay to unlock 70% of the content.

If I wanted that I'd be playing WoW.

ModAcademy Kayn1 votes

And you did participate in an Event. The missions you got were the event for the F2P Player. If ya wanted more, or if you're like me and are a gambling man, you throw some money at it. You're complaining about a lack of content for the F2P player, when you're getting free stuff already, meaning you're just asking for more free stuff.

lofi n chillhop2 votes

yeah I really don't care about this event.

DariusDemiurge2 votes

Zero lore since it's an alternate universe skin line.

Pay wall buy in to Farm a few extra tickets.

Mediocre skins typically rewarded from special event orbs. As seen in so many rng got me with buyer's remorse topics.

And what not.

MagicalDemons2 votes

Riot could just charge $10 a month to play the game and make all these events free. Would that satisfy you than?

ThatOreoTho2 votes

Id do that, but they would most likely lose a lot of players.

ThatOreoTho2 votes

I look at it as its a F2P game you're gonna have to_expect to pay for new content_, as you would with many other F2P games. And for dedicated league players, its definitely possible to earn free rewards for playing often, and completing those free missions, and considering how many events we've had im grateful for another one, i also feel like this event is to promote a lot of the arcade style skins, but also if you're willing to pay, a chance at some rarer skins.

[slayer-jinx-catface]

MeDicenWera2 votes

The Event that was the most fun was certainly Bilgwater. This one's not really bad at all but there's a lack of new things. The accents are cool but maybe do some sort of boss battle cycles with SR, Howlling Abyss, the Dominion map, Tisted Treeline and you get you free rewards that way.

Ztoka2 votes

Idk, I like the arcade map quite a bit. That alone made the event cool imo.

BØLT2 votes

Unfortunately cash events and micro transactions have taken over almost every game...

SmokinSickStyle1 votes

I forgot it was an event. Every true event needs a gamemode to be decent in my eyes, all these mission things are do and forget style for me, i barely even tried to complete those, just play like you usually do and you'll get there.

I wasn't expecting decent free stuff as usual, i always get trash from random hextech/crafting stuff anyway so i can't be disappointed.

Same for the VS event, i didn't feel like i participated at all, buying the passes wouldn't have done it for me anyway.

Well, at least Star Guardian event is on the way...

SwiftKitten881 votes

i haven't even HEARD of "arcade world"... if its an advertisement... their failing pretty poorly indeed
