"It is only a game"

Oh the number of times I hear this in pickscreen. But you know what, it IS only a game, but NOBODY wants to play a game with you with that attitude. You must know the folly of playing a team game alone with nobody on your side.

...That is why I am going to press this dodge button so I will never get to play with you forever. Goodbye random person on the internet. peace

I usually only say "it's just a game" or "it's just norms" when people start to get toxic and start flaming.

Jeddy0176 votes

Yeah, some people need to chill & not rage about everything. Losing one game of League won't cause you to miss paying your bills for the month or have your kids taken from you. Your life isn't defined solely by your League career. Even in Ranked where some toxicity/rage/frustration venting is understandable (maybe acceptable depending on your own views), but there's a certain point where raging at people who's trying their best becomes a bit much.

I make the argument that LoL can be both "just a game" and a lifestyle at the same time

An easier way to visualize this is like the difference between the imperfect and passe compose in French

One is a point in time whereas the other is a routine or setting the scene.

I think people get triggered when you say its just a game because it often comes off a disregarding some thesis of someone's argument or existence with some half-assed answer, and as such I find that it should never be used as a counter argument.

"It's just a game" looks at it as a vacuum. The problem is that even vacuums come from something, and as such the argument is basically a fallacy in of itself, but that doesn't mean some other thesis can be taken away from the exchange.

People IMO in this community just need a better sense of diplomacy, and the closest I find is gbay99 (great, but the LoL community can do better)

"it is only a game"

Me: than why the fuck are you in ranked?

Wish these toxic fucks would just stay the hell away from ranked and stay in normals.

What most people fail to realize about LOL ranked, is that it is one of the few games that offers job opportunity once you get good at it, through streaming, youtubing and tournaments. All of these things are possible once you hit around plat. So when you are going 0/14/0 while inting down mid, you are not just ruining the game experience for your four teammates. but you are also sabotaging job opportunity.

Fuck these toxic fucks who say "it's only a game".

FTFY. It's not acceptable to be a jackass in any game mode, but at least do it in one where I can solo-carry as literately anyone.

I don't see how that relates to "it's only a game."

It's one thing to take something too seriously, not seriously at all, or somewhere in the middle. A good portion of us who say "it's only a game" are in the last camp, not some Tyler1 imitation running down mid. I mean, I get your attitude, but it's about context too. It's not toxic to understand that it's still a game at its core, and that you have a right not to be flamed at. :/

It may be just a game, but every round can take anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes of my REAL LIFE TIME!

So you damn well better start putting effort into this. Or do not play in general.

If you wanna play for fun, go elsewhere. League is meant to be competitive.

@everyone that says "iz just gaem"

In my opinion, League is meant to be competitive.

League IS a competitive game. There is no if and or but about it. It's used as a fucking E sport. When things like Teamwork and Coordination are basically required it tends to be competitive. Every game mode in league has a competitive aspect to it save maybe URF. You can dip around with your 5 man all you want because everyone is in on it but to slack in effort because you think you shouldn't try just because it is a game is stupid. That type of behavior is one of the reasons people flame more. Getting into games with people like that puts anyone on edge and causes such a toxic form of mistrust it's disgusting. You want something not competitive? Play Mario Party where if it's not a clown fiesta every 30 seconds something has gone horribly wrong.

Hethalean2 votes

For you, it's competitive. You're not going to convince me that "league is competitive" is an axiom.

Btw, before you try to interpret it as such, I'm not giving my opinion on league's competitive nature, nor what does competition mean to me. I'm merely commenting on your rigid "you have to do things my way" outlook instead of working with your teammates and their mentality which is by nature of humanity going to be varied. There'll be no guarantee that they'll jive up in a random assortment of 5 people.

You mention that 'You can dip around with your 5 man all you want'. The reverse is also true. Whenever you want to force your ideology on someone else, you always have the option to 5 man with like minded people. Until it is in the ToS that you MUST treat the game a certain way, it'll just be your opinion, nothing more and nothing less. EDIT: There is always the chance that you are so ragey, commanding, and generally unfun to play alongside that you're not going to get a 5 man group (at least for long) which then you're just going to be stuck.

"It's just a game" is not synonymous with "I'm not trying". I have yet to see someone who says that suggest that they're the same. If you think it is, then that's your opinion and it is fine if you want to interpret it that way. Just take it to the pro scene or 5 mans where it isn't. It's not a reason to flame people.

Personally, I think it's a far bigger problem that people feel justified in being angry and venting your frustration at someone else because they don't share your same ideology.

If you want to victimize everything in your life where it's 'you are wasting my time by not being as serious as I am', that's another life choice I guess. They have a place for people like that and I believe it's usually called "Anger Management Classes" because the tendency that I see is that you are much angrier in your life.

As to your "Getting into games with people like that puts anyone on edge and causes such a toxic form of mistrust it's disgusting." comment, that can be the case, but it's a personal life outlook that I do not share because it's what causes the toxicity itself... not that the situation itself is toxic. A lot of the times people bring a lot of this 'toxicity' on themselves without the ability to introspect and they are probably the cause... and not the symptom.

Xilixer3 votes

its not an opinion. league is a competitive game. the objective is to beat your opponent and win. that's the entire point of the game. same with football, soccer and such.

Hethalean1 votes

Good job like zeroing in on like the minorest of the minor of points. Also, compete is definitely a subjective thing. If you don't think you're competing, but just trying to have fun. Then it's not really a competition. It translates to the rest of life as well. There are tons of people who do things that are competitve for some, but they just do it to relax and have fun. Winning isn't the point. AKA not competitive.

Competive can be complete separate of the 'point of the game'.

Also, no where in the definition of any of this does it mean that you should be a dick about it like 90% of the cases when I watch this crap happen. Anger, flame, other general asshole behavior all because someone isn't as competitive as you. lol

Every jerk in these posts thinks competitive is black and white... when it's greyscale and they aren't intelligent enough to realize it. "hey, you're not getting high blood presure and annureisms because we are losing CLEARLY YOU'RE NOT BEING COMPETITIVE" lol

As per the axiom of competitive, it was on the version of "WE WIN!" Plenty of people are in it to win it, and some are in it to have fun, some are in it to get better. Win is not the definition of win nor getting better. aka compete against themselves.

tldr; don't be an asshole about someone else not playing by your rules which is usually why these posts come around. they were raging, and then told 'it is just a game' so they blew up more because they have no emotional control

Xilixer2 votes

winning is the point though. otherwise the game would not feature winners or losers. it doesn't matter the reason as to why you play it. my point isn't justifying the people who are dicks and assholes to other players. my point is that regardless of how you feel this game is a competitive game. in fact its probably the most competitive videogame right now.

People that say that were raised to fail. A true competitive person, one who understands what it takes to succeed will not have this attitude, ever. They are right though, "It is a game". A game is pretty much simple to succeed at if you apply yourself. Imagine how pathetic the real lives are of those that can't even do that in something as simple as a game. I just feel sorry for them.

SchmidttyGames4 votes

You shouldn't. You have no idea what their real lives are like, nor can you assume that their mentality toward a video game (or any other hobby) is equal to their passion for their livelyhood. You can not simply take a perspective on a video game and equate that into a persons entire existence because every existence is different.

Someone who loves what they do in reality will have more reason to feel sorry for you. A joyless life isn't worth living.

It's human nature. If you understand how to succeed then you do so in every venture you partake in. You will never have an apathetic attitude towards something that you are doing. Failures do not understand that concept.

Dukues1 votes

To be fair this can go both ways and you are both just assuming. If someone is trying super hard but being a complete and utter toxic PoS "its just a game" said to them could mean "chill the f out bro its just a game call down and refocus". Its no lie you play worse when your mad so I usually tell myself "its just a game" because I hate getting mad about League. Its not something to build up anxiety and stress about. At the same time there are people who say that and just mess around the entire time ruining the game for your team. Both are bad but saying one phrase is bad when it can have different meanings should be pointed out. There are two sides to every story.

l Helios l4 votes

? That's not what "it's just a game" means. The attitude simply means that if you win, wonderful, and if you lose, it's okay. No one is going into the game saying "I don't give a fuck about this game." They're simply saying, "I'm gonna try to win, but not gonna tell people to kill themselves if we lose." It's not blind disinterest or apathy, rather a realization of the triviality, for lack of a better word, of the game itself.

Apathy is pathetic when it contributes to anything a person does, IE, a failure.

I don't need you to agree with me. I just have no use for apathetic people screwing up things that I am doing.

Hethalean1 votes

You'd think a person who can win and has the attitude you are describing wouldn't let themselves be in the power of people they consider failures. At least a true winner at least wouldn't. They'd not embark in endeavors that aren't profitable to them personally that they can't be as in control of the situation.

The perception is and more times than not tells the real truth anyway. When people bring that type of attitude into a game like this and says things like that there will be people who don't agree. It is a horrible attitude to have when you are playing with other people. Agree or not. This attitude and what's being said should be treated just like any other toxic chat. It is toxic as well.

At the same time, many people likely don't want to play the game when someone needs to say this to someone.

58697132DEL11 votes

This is the worst in ranked especially, when someons 0/4 and i say stop feeding and lal they say is "Its just a game" Yeah but its a game in the specific mode for people that DO want their skill reflected via their ratings or to get the you know, EXCLUSIVE rewards riot releases only for gold and never again. So yeah it's just a game, but Ranked matches are pretty damn important. If you're attitude is "its just a game" no matter what, just stay in normals.

GayFluffyUnicorn1 votes

Yeah somehow this attitude is only accepted in online games by a shockingly large amount of the playerbase even as high as plat/dia+. In a real sports club when you play in a league you would get banned after one game of that attitude until you change it or you will have to look for another club that supports this attitude which you won't find. Ofc noone wants you to insult or even physically harm people, sad i have to even mention this, knowing this community, but the least is to ACTUALLY try your best and people here fail to understand that experience people can SEE if someone is trying or straight up on the edge of trolling. The lee sin failing a towerdive and a flash insec? Tried is hardest, got unlucky whatever. That toplaner going 0/4 by jungler ganks in 5 mins with two wards stored? Not so much. And i feel these guys going like "just a game" try to justifiy their own lack of skill or poor perfomance with it. If you don't give a fuck play aram or normals or any other fun mode but stop watering down the already casualized ranked mode.

I just started hots to get some time out from lol and holy... You have to play a specific amount before able to play ranked so ihave to spam quickplay (basically blind pick but automised team builder) and i just lost 4 games in a row because a few people just completely refused to play in team. So why do they play this game? They simply just stay on their lane and do nothing all game and then these guys come with "just a game"... yup a game you took from me and wasted my real life time for nothing i manage carefully to be able to play my favorite games as much as possible without losing parts of real life and ofc losing a game means less XP and more time i have sink into before being able to play ranked... uah.

Yeah most games don't expect you to play for up to an hour for one match and are heavily team dependant. The only time I have a problem with it is when they do something they know is retarded and never practiced (cleanse/ignite udyr support without any gold/sightstone item) and use it as an excuse to troll. There's a very legitimate use of the term when people are crazy though, you have to admit lots of people turn into rageheads at the drop of a hat even if you played perfect 80% of a match

You wouldn't. You are a millennial. You need things handed to you with little to no contributions and care about nobody but yourself. Play solo games and your attitude don't affect anyone else. It's that simple.
