Annie and Brand and why they aren't supports

Alright, before I get hated completely for saying this, I want you guys to open your champion slot before game and look through all champions there are a total of 25 champions that could do the support role, yet people would rather play as Annie, or Brand which are not supports they are mages.

Kayle-Passive, Q, W, R are all supportive abilities-Reduction to armor and Magic Resist-Movement Speed Decrease-Movement Speed Increased, Heal-Invulnerability Morgana-Q, E, R-Snare-Shield-AOE Slow, Stun Fiddlesticks-Passive, Q, E-Reduction MR-Fear-Silence Anivia-Q,W,R-AOE Stun-Obstacle-Slow Heimerdinger-Passive, E, R situation-Health Regen-Stun, Slow-R modifies these Karma-W,E-Vision,Snare-Shield, MS Increased Lux-Q,W,E-Snare-Shield-AOE Slow Orianna-W,E,R-MS Increased, MS Decreased-Shield, Armor, and MR-Suppression Syndra-Passive,W,E-Increased MS Reduction-MS Reduction-AOE Knockback, Stun Zyra-Passive,W,E,R-Attack after Death-Vision,Snare, MS Reduction-Knockup Ashe-Passive,Q,W,E,R-Permanent Slow-Slow-Slow-Vision-Stun, AOE Slow Soraka-Passive,Q,W,E,R-Increased Speed for low health ally-AOE Slow-Heal-AOE Silence, Snare-AOE Heal Taric-Q,W,E,R-Heal-AR,Armor Reduction-Stun-Steroid Bard-Q,W,E,R-Slow,AOE Stun-Heal-AOE Escape Mechanic-AOE Stun Braum-Passive,Q,W,E,R-Stun-Slow-AR, MR-Damage Reduction-AOE Knockup, Slow Janna-Passive,Q,W,E,R-MS-Knock-back-MS Reduction-Shield,Steroid-AOE Knock-back, Heal Lulu-Q,W,E,R-AOE Slow-MS,Invulnerability-Shield, Steroid,Vision-AOE Knock-up, Single-target Increased Health, AOE Slow Nami-Passive,Q,W,E,R-MS-AOE Stun-AOE Heal-Steroid,Slow-AOE Knock-up,Slow,MS Nunu-W,E,R-MS,Steroid-MS Reduction, AS Reduction-AOE Slow Sona-Q,W,E,R-AOE Steroid-Single-Target Heal, AOE Shield-AOE MS-AOE Stun Tahm Kench-Q,W,R-Stun-Escape Mechanism-Escape Mechanism Thresh-Q,W,E,R-A Pull-AOE Shield, Escape Mechanism-AOE Knock-back-AOE Slow Zilean-Q,E,R-Stun-MS Reduction,MS-Invulnerability Alistar-Q,W,E-AOE Knock-up, Stun-AOE Knock-back-AOE Heal Leona-Passive,Q,E,R-AOE Steroid-Stun-Snare-AOE Stun,Slow

Even some tanks could be valuable supports like Shen, Wukong, Blitzcrank just to name a few for there different reasons with the addition of them being tanky. What does Annie and Brand have:

Annie-Passive after 4 spells she can cast any spell and it stuns her target, most commonly used in conjunction with her AOE sometimes single target and most commonly her ult. Brand-Passive after hitting a target with a spell he can then stun them with his q. Noticed how these two champions only support ability is situation and relies on something else having to happen first given it's easy to get the ability to use these stuns, it doesn't make them support just because you have 1 cc effect doesn't qualify you as a sup. Xin Xhao, Yasuo Malzahar, Gangplank just to name a few all have cc effects some like Gangplank has 2 of them, but they are not supports neither are Annie and Brand. People say well they do well down at bot, well duh, they are mages, mages counter the f out of adcs and the typical supports were nerfed to hell so they couldn't dish out as much damage giving any lane with Annie and Brand a huge advantage and could easily zone out their counter parts. You have 25 options for supports use them master them you'll find that they all are viable in your own ways, they might not do as much damage as an Annie or Brand but that's because they aren't meant to. Just like with Ashe as an adc she doesn't counter anyone because of her damage it's because of her utility that makes her viable and can win her her lane easily same with supports. What makes a champion a support is not their cc effect it's their kit and how it's designed most of these champions above have several cc effects/buffs/shields/steroids/heals that's why they're supports. I don't want to hear any arguments to support why you guys feel that Annie and Brand are supports I've already heard them all but even Riot stated that they're not supports they weren't built to be supports so stop using them in that way or eventually riot is going to nerf them so hard they won't even be viable in their actual positions anymore.

The op is wrong. Support is a role, not a specific champion or set of champions.

If you master the ROLE of support, then you can support with just about anyone. Naturally, some champions are better suited to the support role but that doesn't mean that others CAN'T be played as support.

Fashion Mage1 votes

It's both really. There is the role of support and there is the class of support. A mage can be placed in the role of support, but a support champion is something like Soraka, Janna, etc.

Zarkkast2 votes

First of all, they are supports. Anyone can be a support if you play decently. Shen, Trundle, Poppy, all of whom you did not mention.

Second, Riot is not gonna nerf them because they recognize them as supports.

Riot is actually the one that pushed Brand into the support role with this post: http://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/news/community/promotion/dark-horses-support-brand, before that you would never see a Brand support.

So stop spreading your false and biased claims.

Second of all no they're not it's an excuse for someone to not learn a support champion I get crap load of assists with Soraka Taric and do wonders with them, and I did mention that tanks were viable for the support role every champ you just mention is a tank so yeah already mention them.

Sona Ping1 votes

They didn't "push" Brand into the support role; people were already doing that! That's why they wrote that post. That's how Riot is; they seem to be like 6 months behind other people playing the game, more if they don't agree with it for their arbitrary reasons.

I mean, my favorite support is Nautilus...He's not under the support tree, does that mean that he's also not a support? Please by all means, tell me why I have a 60%+ winrate with him as support?

Annie and Brand have damage. It matters.

Edit: Which they don't need items to much for since the base is so high*

With low mana costs/Cds making them effective supports because they can burst the ADC out.

Second Edit

Riot stated that they're not supports they weren't built to be supports so stop using them in that way or eventually riot is going >to nerf them so hard they won't even be viable in their actual positions anymore.

Then they should buff the support characters so they are NOT total trash.

Supports aren't supposed to be dishing out so much damage dude, that's why they're supports it's their utility that's useful not their damage all annie and brand are is an extra apc on your team, it's not needed, a sup is much more viable annie level 6 ult is kind of cheesy, and brand with so much damage just usually stills so much cs from adc and starves them out and actually I thought of Vel'Koz there's a lot of his kit that could be somewhat supportive still a little confuse why he's not considered a sup people say his ult well Lux is the same way in a sense and no riot didn't push Brand to be a support otherwise they would of stated him as a mage support.

Envy Sin1 votes

I don't understand this need to lock champions into a single role.

ADC are really strong atm. Playing Brand and Annie help shut them down.

I play brand support. Acutally and i'v won quite a few games doing it.

Um Taric Soraka, Sona Morgana Lux almost every champion that is a support isn't total trash you just need to learn them quit taking the easy way people like you is why Annie, and Brand get banned a lot they don't ban them because they're afraid of them mid they ban them because they don't want to see them bot because they way too op at bot lane.

So let's be clear here.

Play weaker champions That's what you're saying lol Okay why don't we see Ashe mid again? Or how about Teemo ADC?

They CAN work. i mean it's just a weaker choice right?

Uh because ashe is a marksman that has no escape mechanisms and is one of the best targets to gank she really needs a sup, teemo could adc and do well not as good as him playing top but I've supported him on several occasions and watch him just dominate bot lane that blind's no joke. I'm not saying play weaker champions, I feel every champion in this game has something to add to a team, something unique I'm just don't like how almost everyone has a master yi in their rotation or an annie as support get creative learn a champion like trundle or something I was surprised when I played as him at how powerful he actually was and wonder why no one played as him? Same thing about Morgana mid, she's not the best option but she's very viable those snares are game changers and her ult with zhonya's forget about it talking about making a team split up. I get it you guys like Annie and Brand support most of you probably do just that this post wasn't intended on bagging on you guys I just wanted you guys and everyone that plays those champions to try others there are over 100 champion in this game, each could be very useful to the team. As for support if your going to plan annie bot or brand bot at least be honest to yourself are you playing them bot because you feel that they'll be good with your adc, or are you playing them bot because you honestly don't know how to support?

Envy Sin1 votes

First off, Trundle has always been a sleeper OP. (Inb4 the secret society of trundle players kills me for saying so)

Second i main support. (Morg) i do sometimes play brand or annie when either

  1. We have nothing but AD on the rest of the team.
  2. I feel like the burst would be better then utility. AKA something like a graves lane and we can make people vanish into thin air.

Uh no Leona is a sup because of her tankiness as well as her kit is pretty much completely sup built did you bother reading what she does at all? Annie and Brand are only considered supports because of their stun so if they can be support why not Yasuo or Xin Xhao or Xerath, or every champion that has a cc effect what about Riven, oh yeah why not if Brand and Annie could do it why not them just is viable as they are, you guys are noobs that probably just pick champions base on what you feel is the most op rather than picking a champion you actually like.

Because I main adc and I prefer an actual support I don't like Annie or Brand as supports because they aren't and I wish riot would simply set the record straight once and for all. If riot wanted them or even considered them to be supports it would say mage support.

I don't riot acknowledge that Brand was a common champion used as a support, but if they intended or wanted him to be one then tell me this. Why doesn't riot put them as a mage support then????? Yeah that's my point they aren't supposed to be supports they weren't created to be supports people only use them as supports because they are really op at the support role, and really cheesy, they are all in go broke or go home type champions. It's like doing a 6 pool as Zerg in Starcraft 2 effective yes, but people hated your ass for doing it. It's the same thing as Annie and Brand, the only reason riot won't and refuses to say anything about it because League of Legends is a free to play game, they don't want to lose players even if they are shitty ass players and like any company they acknowledge that most of the these players that play this game are casual gamers.

If they can have a big impact on a game without items(therein, gold) they can be a support.

Ezreal can be a great support if the other team feeds him. He'll be able to deal a lot of damage, which gives you a form of control over the lane. But you're relying on the enemy to fail for you to succeed, which is a big no-no outside of bronze/silver. I don't think Ezreal can sacrifice a slot or two for ss/support item and keep his damage high.

Brand is able to bring damage at all levels because his passive is max HP%-- and a large amount of it. He really just needs to build Sorc shoes/Haunting Guise and take MPen marks/quints to have a damage impact on top of his stun. His full build as support really only costs about 11k. (800ss+2300FQC+1100boots+1600HG)+(3200Rylai+1600Liandry's) Not to mention FQC will cover about 800-1k in the first 25mins.

In that case any mage can be a support because that's the thing about mages is they aren't very reliant on items more reliant on their abilities what makes a support a support is their kit and the utility it brings to the team, not their damage they bring when people choose a support that shouldn't be something they're concerned about instead you look at what that support can do to help out your adc that gives your adc the best chances to snowball, you don't want a support that is more likely to steal your kill than to feed you like Annie with Tibbers, or Brand with Pillar of Flame easily can take out your enemies practically making your adc useless throughout the game ntm all the cs you're likely to take. I like Brand I own Brand and I've played as Annie and I can play them very well as supports and I found that 90% of my games I dominated bot lane, not my adc, and at the end of the game when we needed our adc to be doing damage he wasn't because he didn't have the items he needed to carry the team, and even though I would be like 6-2-3 or something like that I would be blamed for our team losing because as a support I don't need kills that's not my job my job is to keep my adc alive, Vel'Koz is the only one that's not a support that I think should be because his kit has a few supportive abilities.

Reaper Soraka1 votes

I don't know about that. Ahri for another example requires 5 points in charm to make it last 2 seconds, 1 point in charm is only 1 second, which really isn't enough to get anything done. Her damage is also heavily reliant on high AP. I'm not going to say Ahri support cannot work, but I will say there are simply better options.

Nidalee can bring a lot of damage with her javelins, which gives her some zone control over the lane. She unfortunately can be nulled by standing behind minions, making it a cozy 2v1 lane for your enemy. She needs a bit of AP for her heal to have an impact over, say, thresh auto+flay.

Malzahar could work with his silence and suppress. I think with a little magic pen he could go a long ways, but I haven't really tried it. He feels kind of slow and clunky to me (takes time in a spell-casting motion where you can't move.) I think he might die more than he helps kill.

Personally I think we'll start seeing Quinn support more often. She has a stun-knockback thing, an incredibly annoying blind, some birds-eye view ability, and is incredibly mobile at level 6. I think she can get away with low items because she can just poke with her vault/bird/auto, which are somewhat hard to miss.

BluePolarizer1 votes

Not any mage. They have to fill a few requirements:

  1. They can't have high mana costs because you don't get enough money to rush both mana and AP. Xerath Lux Anivia Swain CassiopeiaOrianna are out of the picture even though their spells are extremely good for support.

  2. They have to have high base damage and CC otherwise they're useless without AP, but you don't get money early on to rush AP.

This is why Velkoz Annie Brand are strong mage supports: they have low mana costs, high base damage/CC and don't need alot of money.

Lux and Orianna are out of the picture? Those are a couple of my favourite champs to play in that role though.

Uh Brand has very high mana cost, and Lux Anivia and Orianna are very good supports in fact I see Lux as support almost just as often as I do annie you my friend just sounded like a complete idiot. as for Vel'Koz his kit resembles that of a lot of supports I don't understand why riot doesn't consider him a support, and when I say riot doesn't if riot wanted annie and brand to be supports they would be mage supports.

Again riot doesn't want to say he's not a support same with Annie because Annie as well as Brand the gamer base feels he's better there and there sales have gone through the roofs with people buying those champions to play at bot lane rather than mid why would riot state anything else it wouldn't be a smart business but instead this endorse it get more money from those idiots that want to keep doing it, it's a trend that's all it is, yes annie has lasted awhile now but most people just ban her now days it's redicoulous because nobody wants to play against an annie support because it makes the game or at least that lane very 1 sided either she wins, or she gets destroyed no middle ground.

You didn't read the article. They specifically were promoting Support Brand and gave various reasons why. Also, no one bans Annie.

I do and I'm not the only one nobody wants to play a game that's really 1 sided and it's not really right for a support to have 1 ability that stuns and takes away half your health, that's why they nerfed other supports in the first place because it was too op......eventually annie will get it to, and that's the thing I would argue that 80% of the champions in this game have decent crowd control some better than others ever, been fucked up by a Wukong? I choose a support based on their kit, riot didn't intend on Annie or Brand being supports they aren't meant to be supports, no not every champion that has a cc effect can be played as support it's their kit as a whole that separates then from just a mage/.......to a mage support like Morgana and Lux, the only reason people play annie and brand as support is the same reason why people play yasuo master yi blitzcrank dr mundo all the time right now because they are pretty damn op and hard to either a lane against or b just period I've think master yis go 0-6 before come back and just annihilate us same with Yasuo except not as bad at the beginning my point being they aren't kick ass supports they are mages that have a stun but they aren't supports, they aren't the class support, when I adc I want the class that has a kit designed to sup me, so I don't have to wait for Annie to get her ult back to engage, or brand to pop his ult so I can hit mine, I want a sup that can harrass constantly and doesn't steal my cs and kills. For all those adcs that like them as a support that's fine but personally I don't and that should be okay and should be understandable and I shouldn't be bitch at by other gamers annie is a viable support so is brand yeah but I prefer someone else someone that synergies better with my adc. The only reason people play them as supports is because it's a really cheesy thing to do it's all in either you win or you lose no middle ground which is why you don't see a whole lot of pros doing it for a reason, it's the 6 pool/cannon rush/2 proxy rax rushes from Starcraft it's cheese, that's why people do it because all the noobs don't know how to counter it.

Despite my level I've been playing this game for awhile now a few years actually just never got to level 30 is there a distinct difference yes, there is and yes I am well aware that people have been playing annie as sup for years just like people have been playing Yasuo at bot and calling him an adc for years now to saying he's a hyper carry lol pathetic annie is not a sup they nerfed the support champions because they were too op for adcs to deal with at the beginning to the point that a support was more likely to snowball than an adc at bot lane, riot didn't like this so they changed it, my understanding of this game is probably way higher than most players that play this game outside of pro players, like I stated I'm no pro but there are way too many options for support to the point you don't need an annie or a brand to win bot lane it's been proven time and time again one stun don't make you a support it's your kit that makes you a support. There are 4 type of players I've seen, they are the ones that play as Annie and Brand support and probably Yasuo bot as well.......they don't want to learn another support most of them either don't rank at all or barely ever play rank......then there are those that just don't care about annie or brand support why because they know how to counter them very well annie has a tell giving it away she's about to stun your ass if you can bait it you can kill her easily, as for brand well if he never ignites your ass he's really useless, that's why they aren't supports. Then there are players like me who likes the game the way it is who likes play champions the way they were intended to be played as, that loves the meta gameplay and is the whole reason why I started playing this game in the first place, using champions like Annie and Brand kind of screws with that and it's hard to counter that sometimes. It takes the game and ruins what makes it fun for a lot of serious players considering that 60% of the gamers that play this game are casual gamers that maybe know a few roles at all, of course they are going after champions that everyone is saying is op.

FooDang2 votes

News flash-the Meta is constantly changing. Annie support used to be the LCS meta now the Meta changed. I'm watching LCS right now FNC vs UOL and Im looking at Graves jungle...

You talk about serious gamers and casuals and you're not even 30 after claiming to play for years. Thats less than casual.

Bottom line, players play who they want where they want and RIOT is fine with that. When they are not they fix it in the patches. If they are effective at that role then why complain? Ever heard of a Kill lane? Probably not, because you're less than a casual. Kill lanes are the Meta Breh.

The only requirements to be a support is:

  1. you can be useful with a 30% less gold income than the next poorest role (jungle).
  2. you can buy sightstone early and not have it impact your game.

No to be a support you need to be able to both protect and feed your adc, every support I mention does something or a combination of several things to protect and/or feed their adc. That's the point of a support, which is why they are supports in the first place. Brand and Annie are not supports you can't just put any champion down there and call them a support.

Brand and Annie both protect their adc with cc (both have stuns) and help feed their adc by providing a lot of damage (and some cc).

Not every support has to be utility or tank supports- damage supports are completely viable assuming they can provide decent damage with minimal gold (which Brand and Annie can, along with others like Vel'koz). The adc does not have to be, and shouldn't be, the only one harassing the enemy adc/support.

OP, just accept that you're wrong.

Welp, guess we better stop playing Blitzcrank support, Nunu jungle, or Ryze or Kennen in the top lane then.

Again I mention tanks were viable supports already, Nunu I never really considered him to be a good jungler, apc could go top or mid so it's a lot different supports are only needed to help the marksman out since they are really weak at the beginning of a game, bot lane is very picky out what champ comp plays there.

I find the notion that a support only exists to help the marksman interesting.

I don't care what champ you pick to support me so long as you grab a gold Gen item and a sightstone

Supports are BORING, you have to be a certain type of person to want your power to be amplified through your teammates, it's not for everyone

The closest thing to a support I can play is nautilus, I dunno why cc based supports are more satisfying then utility supports like Janna or lulu, not better but satisfying

If you don't wanna play sona I understand but if you're going support, go support, don't go spellthiefs straight into a roa annie, get your godamn sightstone, we might need a locket too, and that's your job.

Don't care what champ you pick to do it, just do your job, y'kno?

Again my original comment was stating that I don't understand why people play with Annie and brand as sup never stated you couldn't just feel you shouldn't they aren't technically supports, they are mages that's it, could they play support sure just like every other champion in this game could do, doesn't make it right I just don't want to play with an Annie or a Brand sup because from experience I see it a lot Annie and Brands are way up there and my or my enemy's adcs are way down, and that's not good. And I'm not rank but most of the people play with are rank plat and I beat them at least half the time so yeah I say my game play is up there around plat......so not sure where you getting bronze 4 at? And you watch you mouth punk, I don't give a shit where you at in rank unless you a pro I don't care what you say this is my opinion is it better than yours no.....but is your better than mine no.......it's an opinion base post yes I get it I knew I see this after I post it which is why I stated I didn't want to argue the point of my post was to show others in case they forgot why the team needs a support and what a support has to offer to their adc, annie and brand don't synergize with an adc, it is a kill lane it's no different than running 2 adcs at bot......I don't like kill lanes, I like to lane then team fight then win the game for my team I can't do that with an Annie or Brand stealing my kills all the time......I wanted to show all the supports and make people aware if used the right way every champion above is a viable support but just like any champion it's situational not every support goes good with every adc, some supports are better for others I played Ashe support, did really well with her a lot of people don't do it and I'll admit she's a very situational support but pair with the right adc against the right comp she's very good, I now just do Taric and Soraka as support right now on average I get at least around 15 assists don't think I've run into a game yet where I didn't have the most assists on my team, unless my adc just blew, same with other supports I like seeing different comps makes the game more exciting I already know what Sona or Soraka could do or Annie and Brand I know they wreck lane and if they don't they kind are useless their stuns come in handy but most of the time they're just an extra champ to target in a team fight. The point of what I posted was this people don't play Annie or Brand because they feel they're good supports most people play those champs at support because they feel they are really op so instead of trying to learn a new support champion for eventual rank they say I'll just play annie or Brand and we'll probably wreck I learned my two supports Soraka was easy Taric took some time to understand him a little but now when I play as him I get shit ton of assists my adc eventually either gets fed or my team wins off of my killer ult. I plan on getting Nami and Thresh later on I've played as Morgana, Ashe, and even Gangplank before his rework as supports did wonders with those three but ultimately decided that these 4 champs were the best for my play style I didn't pick on of the champs I own because they were op or not I chose my champions because I like there kit and it fits my game style. I wish more people did that instead of choosing champions they feel are the most op.

Paragraphs man. Paragraphs.

Also, Annie is chosen Support since her Stun Ult plus E usually leaves the enemy laners both stunned and close to death, making for easy ADC kills. Brand can ultimate the enemy at high health as long as they are near each other to apply his passive as well as get off big damage. Then he can stun with Q for a good kill for his Carry.

The lesson here is, as long as the character has large amounts of crowd control, they can Support. Even if they have huge damage, they can still be a Support since abilities can be controlled to not kill an enemy.

Trundle was just an example but he's a really strong pick, and even then you won't get the items a mage would get at playing mid just saying so in all honestly playing morgana if your supporting with brand and or annie wouldn't it be the same type of items they get????? Your 2nd point Sona has a great burst, Zyra lockdown morgana lockdown are very nice the problem with brand and annie they tend to steal a little too much kills on average they tend to take a little too much cs, there are better choices but I feel most don't want to learn those other choices.
