Smite top laners

So at first this struck me as a dumb and gimmicky thing to do, but I've been thinking about it lately.

One of the biggest complaints people have about top lane is that you are essentially stuck on an island, where you do nothing to help your team and sometimes the junglers come to visit, because they DO get to do things. The teleport top lane meta was one way to address this, allowing you to make ONE play anywhere on the map once every 3 minutes or so.

Now, thinking specifically about Shyvanna when I say this... since the whole point of the strat revolves around invading and counterjungling the enemy jungler, doesn't this strategy essentially allow top laners to function as secondary, part-time junglers? Doesn't this allow them a way to take risks and impact the game by setting up plays with their own jungler to crush the opposing jungler through superior teamwork and vision coverage? Isn't this exactly the kind of thing we want in League?

I'm actually kinda changing my mind on this one. I like the idea of it. And you do still give up a lot in order to do this, namely you have to choose between running flash or teleport, meaning you lack either safety or the ability to make plays across the map. And this typically means losing out on ignite, which gives your lane opponent a lot of potential kill pressure over you. I'd say ensure that counterplay exists and is effective, but I don't think doing away with this strat completely is the right answer.

I find it funny how people claim that theirs no variation in the meta. yet any deviation from said meta is considered to be cancer.

I think "WE ARE" the ones responsible for tunneling top laners into being Team fighting tanks. I say this because, while top lane is an Island with little team interaction. You could very well end up with the most XP and the most Gold because your farming the entire game. If you had any remote carry potential you would end up being an unstoppable split pusher. (remember when Jax was OP?)

As for the whole smite top lane thing. Giving the top laner that ability to Jungle/counter Jungle, will make him snowball even faster. I would have argued that this is offset by a) trading flash for smite and b) it takes time to build your cinder Hulk. though perhaps this is not enough.

Riot will probably look at ways to nerf cinderhulk. (but in a direction that doesn't hurt junglers as much) Personally I would look at challenging smite, considering it's invaluable in the 1v1 senereo that is top lane.
