So what's the best advice for playing against tanks as Riven?

I just started playing top lane more as well as Riven and got her arcade skin too. (In other words I'm in too deep.) I've had some fun learning her animation cancelling and all when I go against squishier targets, but tanks are the bane of my existence. They just sustain really hard and the cloth 4 pots is kicking my ass if anything. So far I've done poorly against Aatrox, Olaf, and Sion. Malphite I didn't have too much trouble, I just tried to make him burn up his mana wave clearing and tried to push the wave and roam a little. The others I try my best to bully, but eat shit in the process. The very first thing I can obviously do is scrap the 45% CDR for the extra armor pen.

Here is the steps of beating tanks with Riven:

Step1: Don't play Riven

While I'm not a riven player myself I can suggest one thing which is if there are riven related questions to be asked all that needs to be done is to pray (and google) box box

The problem with trying to do extended trades vs tanks top as Riven is that not only are they likely to win the whole trade, but the minion damage you'll take tips it in their favor even moreso. Depending on the tank, priming your Q for the third hit and getting a W / Auto / Eing away is about all you'd want to do. It feels like a battle of attrition vs actually trying to kill them outright.

You'll want to play it safe until around level 6 or higher in these lanes. Go for an all in rather than trading at this point. You can even start yourself with a sustain start and teleport if you're having trouble playing safe.

Since when was the trash champ Aatrox a tank?

I'm honestly confused about him. All I see are people build a little bit of attack speed, then defense and they become tanky and unkillable and do really well.

Not so pro-tip: if tanks have troubles in farm and waveclearing (and they have troubles vs Riven early), they are forced to retreat under tower and wave clear there, BUT because of this they often have no minions around and suffer damage from enemy minions (and if they are mana gated they could even waste too much mana to keep up farming and save the tower)...so either tanks are forced to back to base and get back which gives you a chance to take tower down or roam or they get low enough that you can eventually all-in them even under tower

If you did bad against Aatrox, Olaf and Sion you just got outplayed. None of them are particularly tanky early on. Sion is the only tank out of the three of them.

Malphite should actually be the hardest of them for you to deal with.

One suggestion I have that no one is mentioned is don't try to kill your lane. If you're having trouble against tanks, just farm and push your lane, go back, and go roam and gank.
